I basically only saw this movie on accident.
I was taking two of my younger siblings to a movie and obv the options were this movie or the minions movie. I knew nothing about this movie, but my mom said that every time the previews came on for it that the kids said they wanted to see it and that it was about a dog voices my The Rock. (Turns out, she was talking about Super Pets…) Now, a third sibling of mine actually wanted to go see the minions movie, but not this one. But I was like, I don’t want to pay to see a minions movie tbh. So I take the two younger ones.
And we’re sitting alone in the theater and the previews are playing. The one for Super Pets comes on and I’m like. Huh. That’s an interesting coincidence.
Like half way through the movie my brother turns to me and says “I like this, but when is the actual movie going to start?” The look on his face when I told him that this WAS the actual movie was the funniest part of the whole experience.

So the movie theatre I work at has this saying about one of our screens. "Screen 10 is where movies go to die." It's the smallest and oldest screen we have and movies that end up un there are the ones doomed to not do very well in the box office. Paws of Fury was shoved in there on day one and only sells maximum 8 tickets per showing. They tried to switch it with Minions one day, and that was the first day we had 5 people in one of our largest screens and a sold out show in screen 10. We can't force the doom. Screen 10 chooses which movies will die. That's all I know about this movie

It sounded like “poop a lot” in spanish and it definitely felt intentional given how theres a toilet theme within the movie. So having that city name context kind of made the movie funnier, it wasn’t like top comedy but i think its definitely something significant that a lot of people probably missed the joke of “Kakamucho” since I mean it’s based on spanish words Caca and Mucho.

I do think it’s kind of cute that they took the story from a famous Western (ok “Western”) in a “feudal Japan” direction given how many famous Westerns (and several notable animated films) were originally influential samurai films from the likes of Akira Kurosawa and others. The example everybody knows is Seven Samurai, which aside from being adapted as a samurai story like a million different ways (sci fi robot anime, anybody?) famously became The Magnificent Seven, and later became A Bug’s Life.

So I watched this, watched the paws of fury movie and wanted to come back and comment that I honestly thought it was a really cute kid friendly homage to the og movie and the humor really fits Mel brooks's style. Even if it was trapped in Hollywood hell for a decade, I thought it was an honest and well intentioned movie lol. And the plot repeat gave me way more "We really value this old guys funny movies" over "copycat cash grab" Mel brooks movies have never been particularly high budget and the rapid fire humor is his whole style, same with the 4th wall breaks. But idk. Imo, the movie was really cute and I definitely liked the humor and story.

Hank was super cute through the whole thing and Michael Cera did a great job with the voiceover. Comedies tend to be a hit-or-miss for me, but there was some pretty funny writing throughout. Overall I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10.

My immediate critique of the movie when seeing it was the animation. It was giving straight-to-DVD animation quality. So I was surprised when I saw it was being sent to theaters. I remember hearing about this concept through Pan Pizza’s video years ago, I thought the idea of being a kid friendly version of Blazing Saddles was funny since I love that movie. If they would’ve kept the name, put it to streaming instead of theaters, and not focus on only getting an obscene amount of big name actors for no reason, then it probably could’ve been a slightly better experience.
But judging by their original cat-ass teaser poster, it was probably doomed from the beginning.

I remember seeing the trailer for this and immediately knowing it’d be mediocre at best it just feels like one of those movies that should have came out in the early/mid 2000s. It looks like it would have gone directly to dvd or been a movie like Open Season or Alpha and Omega

I am willing to compliment them on one thing: they had the decency to have the characters use styles of Japanese swords other than katanas. As a proud otaku, I Iove katanas as much as the next guy, but Japan has so many other kinds of swords that are very rarely used in fiction. I saw a tanto (short sword), a chokuto (straight-bladed sword), and an odachi (long-bladed sword) in that movie poster. Good on you for that, Paws of Fury!

    • @JargonMadjin
      @JargonMadjin ปีที่แล้ว +47

Mortal Kombat introduced me to the tanto and Nioh 2 introduced me to the odachi, Modern Warfare (2019) introducing me to the kodachi, I can't remember how I learnt about the wakizashi though. The kodachi and wakizashi are often confused with each other, but the difference tends to be that kodachi are a set length whereas the wakizashi length varies to complement the height/length of the user's katana, as the wakizashi is usually carried alongside it

I saw this movie a couple days ago with family and while a few jokes made me chuckle, most of the movie felt like watching a story an animal-loving five year old wrote and their dad attempting to help, rewrote like half of it/the jokes. I was actually wondering if this was a Kung Fu Panda inspired film because of the movie's hand drawn looking opening (which while not being as great as Kung Fu Panda's opening, was actually one of my favorite parts of this movie).
Shoe-horned in references, puns, obligatory fart/toilet jokes (which is fine to have but like the video mentioned, had too many jokes/references shoved into your face at once so it felt like they were begging you to at least chuckle at their movie without really putting effort). I also noticed how much jokes were explained and over explained in the movie. I don't think this was the intention but I hated Hank for most to the movie. Spoilers ig but the movie built him up to be a quiet, loyal, determined dog. Even though all the cats hate Hank, he's still willing to learn how to protect the village instead of finding a way back to his home. After he defeats the sumo cat thing he suddenly becomes super prideful and obnoxious about having defeated the sumo cat, and hates his teacher for "not being fun" which makes him go off to a party because he "deserves to have fun". It could have worked but how they went about writing it felt kind of forced. A lot of times I went "why are you doing this..you could have done that instead...man they are stupid why did you do/act like that it makes no sense...."
I'm not even that good at writing and yet have so many idea about how the plot and characters could have been improved. Bit random but that one cat (apparently google says his name is Chuck) feels like he'd fit perfectly in the Angry Birds movie

A few days ago I saw the movie poster with the dog on it outside of a theater. I had NO IDEA that it is the _exact same movie_ as this one with the fat sumo cat's back as the movie poster at all (which I thought was some kinda B-movie was was released for DVD _years ago)._ I _never_ noticed the fat cat on the same movie poster I saw a few days back, and now I see it here, he ALSO looks different on the front (you would think a knot-top hairstyle like that would be visible from the back as well... but it's simply NOT THERE on the back view. He also looked like he was slouching on the back view, but he's NOT doing that on the front view). What didn't help is that the title for it in my language ("De Legende van Henk") was actually the _subtitle_ of Paws of Fury, so can you blame me for thinking Paws of Fury and The Legend of Hank were two completely different films, thinking the former was about sumo wrestler cats and latter trying to imitate Kill Bill or something?

So I watched this review when it came put in July and figured, 'Yeah, don't think I'll bother with that one'. Three months later it releases here in Australia, and I've totally forgotten about the review, and go watch it. Ten minutes in and I suddenly realise "Hah, this is taking off Blazing Saddles", and being old enough to have watched Blazing Saddles when it came to the movies and it was the first time I'd seen a movie that 'broke the forth wall', and thought it was hilarious. Now, being into fandoms and stuff (well, I am watching SabreSpark reviews right?), I sit back and watch Paws of Fury, giggling at all the Blazing Saddles references. Was it a bad movie? Hell no!, but it was interesting that sometimes I was the only one laughing at what I could see were reference gags, that no one else was getting. I'd give it a 7.

After seeing just 1 trailer, to me this movie looks a lot like a Kung Fu Panda ripoff/wannabe. The only little differences are the choice of animals, the country/culture and martial arts (specifically, cats and dogs instead of native Chinese animals, Japan instead of China, and Samurai instead of Kung Fu), but other than that, I think it's clearly an obvious failed tryhard attempt at being the next Kung Fu Panda, or maybe competing with it similarly to how Shark Tale was made to compete with Finding Nemo but failed (and this movie did even worse!)

At the theatre I work at, this movie only lasted about a week and a half after release. We had about 3-4 showings of it a day, and at max we sold maybe 12 tickets over the entirety of its showing. Which is sad as hell, considering that Top Gun: Maverick is STILL showing despite the fact that it's been MONTHS. Anyway, any other movie theatre workers afraid for Avatar 2? 1) You should read Fiasco, a book about how movies like Cleopatra, Ishtar, Waterworld, and Battlefield Earth got made.
      2) Gene Siskel used to say: "Is this movie more interesting than a film of the same actors having lunch together?"

In my opinion, the story was doomed by it's own Protagonist. Hank just isn't likeable. He's incredibly disrespectful and downright cruel at times to his mentor, almost instantly gets an inflated ego from his first lucky victory (that arguably wasn't even his), and is just generally the opposite of everything that made Bart from the original an enjoyable character.
In the original, the fact Bart was a clever and charming individual was almost immediately established. He manages to pull a fast-one on his supervisors and really lets it flow when singing. These aspects then come to play later when he literally Bugs Bunnies Mongo with an explosive package. Not so in the remake. He is first introduced on his way to his execution and has very little about his character established outside of his dog idiosyncrasies until he exposition dumps his backstory, which he immediately burns any sympathy it gains him by going from admiration to loathing and declaring he never wants to see the remake's version of the Waco Kid so fast that it makes him seem like a straight up brat.

the animation industry has been going downhill, and it's apparent in it's treatment with good animated series like amphibia and the owl house. good shows get the short end of the stick because they cost more money than cheap garbage like marmaduke and... this. they can shove their budget towards big name actors because they know that's all people care about, not the actual hard workers that make the movies run
