    So apparently Smurfette's original depiction in the comics is actually based off a real Swedish lady named Pilt Carin Ersdotter, who actually was regarded as so attractive that there was a point where a mass of traffic jams and accidents were caused by people being distracted by her beauty, and she was actually arrested and put on trial for being distractingly beautiful. The judge, being a sane and reasonable person, ruled that being attractive isn't a crime and dropped all the charges.

    I always considered the Smurfette Principle applying only when the lone girl character's whole personality is being The Girl (tm), because there are many examples of shows and media with just one female character who's actually super dynamic and has a lot of personality, and I personally don't see a problem with that.

    • @PrincessNinja007
      @PrincessNinja007 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      It's not just about any individual piece of media being well or poorly done, but the fact that it's a common enough phenomenon to have a name. And as the video briefly mentioned, there's still also the phenomenon that if there's more than one girl, the whole thing just becomes "girl's stuff".
      The girl's personality being "girl" is its own problem that just happens to have a strong correlation and comes from the same thought processes

    • @imthebossmermaid3648
      @imthebossmermaid3648 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      But that's not what Smurfette Principle means. If there's only one girl in a cast of guys, then she's still a Smurfette, it doesn't matter what her personality is or how much development she's got.

      Although as a woman, about the whole smurfette dynamic thingamajig, I don't find it at all demeaning to women to do that, because maybe I grew up in an environment that didn't belittle women so much? Or made them equal? Perhaps that's the case, because it seems like everyone else my age is sensitive to this topic, and believes that the female character should be a little bit more significant, while I see it purely a circumstantial. Perhaps I'm so advanced, that I see women as just human beings that can be represented in any way, shape or form, and it's not really offensive? Except for of course, straight up sexualization, which that is bothersome to me of course. I don't know, just throwing in my two cents here

      @@stitchfinger7678 Saber did mention that its not always a bad thing, but think of it as representation as a whole, lets take it to a black character. A black character, if any, is the only 1 of their cast. They're usualy portrayed sterotypically sassy )if a woman) or stupid (if a man). Examples include Trixie from American Dragon, Tucker from Danny Phantom, Clevland from Family Guy And if 1 was from a horror movie, guess who dies first? And dont get me started on all the n-word jokes in mature stories. Being a black person with light skin, I was luck to at least be able to watch the white characters, but never a good femine black girl to relate too.
      Now apply that to other POC and LGBT+, or women. Sterotypical depictions, pushed into the bg to be used by a straight or white or male or all of teh above mc. Only rarely had their been a show with them as mc, (Kim possible, MLaaTR, American Dragon, Samurai Jack) and it was STILL written in a sterotypical way by non-Poc/LGBT/female creators. So it still wasnt an accurate representation of the experience.
      You're responding to a lot of comments defending the SP. But the SP doesnt just exclude a great variety of women, but other minorities too. They deserve as much representation as a boy or white boy. Just cause it ISNT always a bad thing is an EXCEPTION. None of these writters (afaik) had bad intentions, but its still exclusionary and hurts.
      RETROACTIVE EDIT: This also applies to neurodivergent and physically disabled people too! Everyone desrves good rep.

    In girl shows, it's the other way around. With a cast of mostly females, there's usually only one male (who serves a romantic and/or supporting role).
    Although it's less common in shows for both genders to not be mostly male, I think it just has to do with female characters unfortunately being associated with "girl power" in-your-face feminism.
    Also, I've sometimes thought to myself... "What exactly do girls like?"

      One could argue though that the most obvious trait to identify an individual in a group is the one you should go with. Smurfette and the Female titan are the only ones of their kind so there isn't really a need to be more specific, right? I see how this can be skewed as painting a flat female character, but this logic seems flawed to me, since they would obviously have to get more specific were there more than ONE female among the smurfs or titans.

    I like Smurfette. She is one of my favorite Smurf characters. No matter what the principle or people say about her, I will like her because to me, she goes beyond being just the "girl" character. She is not always the damsel in destress (almost all of the Smurfs have been in that role more than once), she is outspoken, she is kind to almost everyone, she is very empathetic, and she is very brave and cunning when she needs to be. Also, she is not afraid to express herself or her interests despite being in a village full of males. Any other person might feel like they have to conform to the interests and habits of the other inhabitants to fit in, but Smurfette continues to garden and accessorize because she is not afraid to do what she likes. When she does her thing, it is not because she is the "girl" character of the show, it is because she is Smurfette and she likes to do it. And that is why I like her.

As you pointed out, a show can have excellent female characters and "fail" the test, or it can have crappy, shallow female characters and "pass." What's more useful is to take note that such a trivial, simple thing regarding female representation in media is remarkably difficult to find -- whereas the equivalent with male characters is comically easy to find.
    Also, if the inclusion of Smurfette was to allay fears that the smurfs were gay, then by that logic doesn't that imply that all the smurfs are fucking her? Is that what they wanted viewers to think?

      I feel like I was trained by media to view the world this way as a kid. Even now in my thirties as a writer I find it really hard to write decent female characters because of this brainwashing and our culture and history's general dismissal and hiding of women and female roles. We're basically trained to believe women's personality is 'woman' and that animals, hobbies, colors etc. are all gendered and women get the soft and boring ones. I struggle to make women characters cool because cool women end up being labeled as bossy or bitchy and always unlikeable. There's the prevailing attitude, even in me, that men are exciting drivers of plots and get to go around freely doing whatever they want and having any personality trait no matter how abrasive and still be likeable. Like women are just there to support the males. And I feel like as a woman I should know full well about how cool women are, but it still feels like there's nothing to DO with them, especially in light of how restricted women are and always have been by male aggression in the real world. It's totally untrue that women are not just as much people as men, but still hard to fight this internalized coding, and way too many people are happy to not question it and teach their girls and boys the same thing like it's fact and not a concerted campaign of marginalization and erasure. Every girl I played with growing up wanted to be a male character because they were the ones that were cool and did things. Even when we were just pretending to be normal animals we often specified we were male because that meant we were better somehow. It makes me mad.

      @@martletkay I mean, it's actually stupidly easy to write a woman: make a human being with a given personality, a past that influenced their traits, and hopes & fears that result from that past. Basically, _exactly the same as guys._
      Hint: See them first as *characters.*
      I think the issue of not knowing how to write a race or gender just comes from a fear of messing up what you don't relate to. But if you break them down to their past, wants and needs like I just did, it becomes easier. Putting yourself in their shoes helps too. I also don't think societal brainwashing is to blame; if you're a good writer, you're a good writer.
      Also, when it comes to cool females, Akita comes to mind. The MC in Ghost In The Shell too. Ripley from "Alien" as well. Sarah Conner is another. And don't forget Kill Bill's MC. All of these women were created in the past, and they are loved by the men who watched them. Not solely bc they were attractive but bc they're awesome characters. It goes to show that you CAN make females cool and adored, *if you see them first as characters.* That's my take.

      Huh.. a bit of the opposite for me, I actually have more female characters than male characters. Not that I only have one male character but it's harder for me to create male characters than female characters. I always thought it was because, "I'm a girl my self, so I know what I want to see portrayed in the girls" and also because I suck at drawing male bodies.

      @floofzykitty5072 3 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      @@pyrrhicvictoly I feel like the "one of the guys" trope also arose from the idea that is still prevalent today that anything that is targetted towards teenage girls is "bad taste" and problematic. • @pyrrhicvictoly

      @@floofzykitty5072 The history of it is as long as misogyny in literature, and it's like Katha said: boys are individuals, girls are types. These stories are told from a male POV, so when there is one girl she's "THE girl". When there are two, there needs to be contrast so it's tomboy and girly girl, blonde and brunette, rich and poor, etc. If color-coded, the original girl is pink, the second girl is yellow or purple. Often the girls will compete for male attention, but even if they're on friendly terms it's rare for them to have scenes together where they just do their own thing. Some producers of this type of media, when confronted, even justified it with "men don't pay attention when women are talking".
      I get what you're saying about teenage girls and anything they like being labeled as cringe. Boy bands might be a better example. Teen girls (and plenty of adult women too) are often drawn toward more gentle/androgynous expressions of masculinity, and those dudes who think you have to be "alpha" to get girls are very seriously threatened by the idea.
      In regards to Twilight, yeah there was a period when the critics focused on "sparkling vampires" and basically just crapped on Edward being too pretty/sensitive. However, Twilight's kind of complicated beyond that. There really is a lot of legitimate criticism about the way it romanticizes abusive relationships and the way indigenous people are portrayed. I also don't agree that Twilight was clearly not designed for adults to enjoy. Twilight began as Buffy fanfiction, and a lot of its tropes are just fanfic tropes. The army of middle aged moms who got into Twilight isn't coincidental. Vampire romance fanfic appeals to all ages, lol.

      Don't forget the fact that the tomboy/cool girl is always seen as an upgrade from the girly girl. It's weird because the 'cool girl' is mostly just a fantasy created by male writers- saying that a woman must always like the same things as them while being hot af (Ofc if you're not hot, even if you like non-girly stuff, you're not considered a 'cool girl' apparently lmaoo). The trope also sees anything 'girly' as disgusting which sounds misogynistic af tbh.
      I mean,, as a girl, it's fine to like girly stuff. It's also chill to not like them. But it's weird how there so many stories wherein "being a girl" and "not being like other girls" are the only personality traits that female characters have lol

      I've started trying to voice act when playing RPG's recently, mostly just to amuse myself, and getting female voices and mannerisms down. There is one Lady Pirate Captain who is practically impossible.
      It's to be expected, I guess.

      Tons of female writers did it and wrote male characters. Just write a character that is female or a character that is male. Unless the society your character grows up in has extremely gendered expectations you don't have to worry too much about a character not being "female" or "male" enough.

    Fun Fact Tom Ascheim (President of Cartoon Network and Boomerang) stated that "Girls tend to age out of Animation as late kids and then come back into it as adults, while Boys tend to not leave Animation at all. Boys have always been a safe medium for Cartoons." But he's trying to also give CN a girl focus.

      This is exactly what happened to me. There's this weird standard where girls have to start "acting mature" and back in the day at least, cartoons were for kids. So basically if you were a girl who liked cartoons you were considered an inmature baby, but if you were a boy who liked cartoons it was cool.

    • @Johallichan
      @Johallichan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      I think this is not something inherent to girls, but just part of the expectations placed on them, like someone else mentioned as well as the lack of engaging content for them.

    • @beththedarkmage3359
      @beththedarkmage3359 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      It's obviously not true because I only liked cartoons more and more as I got older. Then again, I never cared for social expectations or fitting in.
      Sexist stereotypes really piss me off. If you can observe a change like that, surely you can also see it's because of the very stereotypes you continue to push on girls. Given the option to just be themselves, a girl who likes cartoons a hell of a lot as a child will continue to as a teen and as an adult.
      Part of why is because of the very few shows that are successful and are aimed at teens, the other because of the Smurfette Principle and just generally aiming everything at boys (despite girls typically getting toy companies more money because 'girl toys' are more collectable).

    Is there a lesser form of Smurfette Principle where it's one female character per side (one good, one evil) or if you have a cast of characters so large the male/female ratio is about that of shows that do have Smurfette Principle? Specifically, I'm thinking of the GIJoe cartoon with dozens of Joes but only a handful of Janes.
