Iona Abbey - Isle of Iona - Scotland | 4K | DJI Mini 3 Pro and GoPro12

The island of Iona is considered the cradle of Scottish Christianity. In the sixth century AD, Saint Columba, an Irish priest and missionary, founded an abbey on Iona and settled there with his 12 companions after being expelled from Ireland. From here he carried out Christianization activities in Scotland, among the Pictish tribes and in Northern England. He founded about 56 monasteries over which he had jurisdiction, so he became quite an important player, not only religious but also political, which he expressed by leading to a dialogue between Ireland and Scotland, which put Scotland on the path to independence. After his death, Columba became one of the most popular saints in medieval Europe, and for the next hundreds of years, crowds of pilgrims travelled to his grave on a tiny Scottish island, and the abbey grew and became richer. Columba's remains were placed in a very richly decorated reliquary.
News of Iona's wealth and the reliquary must have reached even as far as harsh Scandinavia, from where Viking boats began to spread terror across Europe. Iona was the target of one of the first plundering expeditions in the British Isles in 794. The Vikings had not yet managed to completely sack the abbey at this point, but after establishing their bases on the Irish coast they attacked again in 802. This time they not only plundered the abbey but burned it to the ground. In another attack 4 years later, they brutally murdered 68 monks. After this act, few missionaries dared to live on the island where the famous reliquary was still located. Only a few hermit monks and Abbot Blaithmaic remained there. In 825, the Vikings returned for treasures. They murdered all the monks again, leaving only the abbot alive, from whom they demanded to hand over the reliquary. Blaithmaic claimed ignorance of its whereabouts, so the Vikings cut him into pieces. After this event, the next abbot divided the contents of the reliquary between Kells Abbey in Ireland and Dunkeld Cathedral in Scotland. Despite this, Iona was plundered several more times by northern invaders, with the last attack recorded in 987, almost 200 years after the first. After the end of the Viking era, the kings of Scotland rebuilt the church on Iona to commemorate the cradle of their religion. In the 13th century, a women's order of Augustinian sisters was established on the island, and the men's order was renamed the Benedictine Abbey.
With the decline of the Celtic Church in Scotland in the 17th century, the Abbey on Iona also fell into oblivion and ruin. Only in the 20th century, it was rebuilt by the ecumenical community of Iona scattered around the world, with the special participation of Reverend George MacLaod, a visionary and social reformer. Today, the island is under the care of the NTS (National Trust for Scotland) and the abbey is under the care of Historic Environment Scotland. Members of the community still live on the island and their spirit gives this place a unique, idyllic, relaxing and spiritual character.
