Creag Meagaidh is an 1130-metre-high Munro towering over Loch Laggan. It is also the name of a range formed by this mountain with two other neighbouring Munros (Stob Poite Coire Ardair and Càrn Liath). Between peaks of that range sits a Creah Meagaidh National Nature Reserve, with the famous valley Coire Àrdair and the small, but incredibly charming Lochan a' Choire. In some aspects, this valley resembles Corrie Fee, with a charming river meandering between small glacial hills and high, rocky cliffs climbing hundreds of meters from the bottom of the valley. At the far end of the Coire Àrdair is the wide gully called The Window which offers access to all three Munros. Coire Àrdair is also famous for its alternative route to these peaks - in winter is frequently visited by ice climbers who ascend vertical walls of cliffs towering over the lochan.
Our favourite part of the walk is the riverside path from the car park to the Lochan a' Choire. It is quite long, around 4 miles one way, but the beauty of the whole trail is so outstanding, that you hardly feel it. Along these 4 miles, there is only a 400m altitude gain, so the path is only very slightly sloped and there are only two or three places where the ascent is a little more steep.
The car park is free and quite big. A few hundred meters from it is the repurposed farm which serves as National Nature Reserves HQ. There are picnic tables nearby and a toilet which feels like an opulent luxury in comparison to some other Munro Trails 😁.
