Madame Yoo is an 82-year-old elderly woman in Korea and has raised 5 children. She has been living alone for 5 years. Madame Yoo now survives off of a $200/month government pension and $2/day earned by tirelessly picking up cardboard boxes from morning to night.
Check out our first visit to Madame Yoo here ► • We surprised a Korean ...
It’s winter now in Seoul, South Korea, and we visited her for the third time to see how she’s been managing to keep warm. What we didn’t tell her is that we came with a surprise that would change her life forever.

Do you know how Grandma Yoo is doing today at all?
Where is an update on her?
The fact that she raised 5 children and now she is old and living alone, hits me hard
Gemma Joikhun not every mother deserves to be loved back and taken care of, for example when there was no love or a lot of violence in your childhood.
She seems to be very kind and nice, but there‘s always a reason when children are staying‘ away.
HN i‘m an atheist, but i respect it when you beliefe because of god or the bloodline even those kids are responsible for their parents.
I think everybody gets what he/she deserves, and i would never talk bad about someone who need to stay away from his/her parents to be safe/healthy. 🤗
@@Ajumi- her kids are around to take her money
Flicey wait is that a good or bad thing that it’s tradition ? That makes me sad, don’t they realize they will be old one day ? How sad
@Flicey i don't think its tradition it's their bad habit to abandoned the one who raised them
My mom always says to me; “One set of parents can raise and look after 10 children, but 10 children cannot look after one set of parents..” And it’s absolutely right.
It is not the childs responsibility to look after the parents. Their parents looked after them and their children will care for children also.
@@howiehowdy so you're not going to look after your parents when they're old, and at their most vulnerable stage of their life?
@@sweetyfri no i am not. They were at their most vulnerable when they were children. They are in their 70s and terrible with money like they have always been. They had 50 years to figure out how to save for retirement. If i can put a hundred grand in my 401k in ten years from 10 to 15 bucks an hour over that period, then they have no excuse considering their income levels were what mine is today when they were my age in the 60s. My responsibility is to my children who will have their college paid for by frugal parents who make less than the national household average income, and my savings will ensure that i may die with dignity. Parents should not expect their children to care for them, they should expect their children to care for their children. Hope i wasnt unclear.
I left school at 14 to care for my bedridden mother after car accident, she got well in 3 years. Now she is old I have been caring for her every need 15 years now. I can tell you I only did it because I feel a sense of karmic duty, it has been very hard on my mental state. I wouldn't expect or wish it on anyone else🤯
@@iamthatiam44444 do you live in the US julie? Im sorry you have gone through that for so long. It was not the karmic duty of a child to care for her sick mother for 15 years. Its a miserable terriblething that would bring dispair to any good parent watching themselves damage their childs future's so irreparably. The earth is not a care free happy place, the only thing that seperates you from mother natures constant attempts to turn you into dirt are 4 walls and electricity. If you Do live in the us and your mother has been bedridden for 15 years the government can assign her a state appointed caretaker, if she has been well enough to do something to earn an income then she may have decided that it was your duty... some parents are travel agents for guilt trips, and if that is the case i suggest you move out and tell her to get her butt answering phones at a call center or something so you can get back to the life you put on hold 15 years ago. I understand i dont know the nature of her disability, but there are still disabled people who can do things... thats why they make buildings handicap accessable. If you dont live in the us there probably wont be much of a social safety net for your mother to fall back on, and that is a whole other can of worms. But you have a good story to tell and you have internet, so tell your story and people may help, and can be very willing to extend the same help that they recieved during tough times. Think of all your options because knowledge is power
The way she says: “They paid me more because you guys where filming” was really cute
@K HARDER it's better than nothing. If you want to be those "other" people that states that they "help" people secretly sure go but that does not make you better for those who do share their act of kindness.
Then she got only $3.5....
@@shakur6000 😞😞
Has almost nothing but her first thought when hearing she has $20,000 is, "I can help a lot of others with that money."
She is so pure
She doesn’t look like she got much for herself... I reckon she gave all the money to her kids.
it's almost always the ones who are lacking are the same ones who helps more. it's just sad.
Yvette Wong my opinion is a giver is a happier person
Imagine if all humans are like that.. how beautiful this world can be
“I can help a lot of others with that money.”
Imagine this kind of mindset where her first thought was it could help other instead of her own needs ;c
Yeah, that's probably why she's been neglected. She's basically the giving tree. Everyone takes & gives nothing in return.
I don't think that it's too uncommon
@@achanwahn i think it was good that they won't give her the money all at once so she won't spend it all away by giving it to others. it might sound selfish but she's old and needs to have a stable source of money :(
@@kopi1ced yeah. Elderly people makes perfect targets for degenerate assholes to leech off of. Not surprised by their decision to not giving her all 20k at once.
It's probably her kids and family.. unfortunately
"I can help a lot of others with that money"
She still thinks about other people despite her situation! ♥️
Yes and it's really heartwarming to think about
Several European countries such as Belgium and Switzerland have legalized *assisted suicide* for the elderly people and terminally ill people.
So elderly people or terminally ill people who can''t take care of themselves anymore and do not want to spend the rest of their lives rotting away in a assisted care/retirement home have to the option of being euthanized fast and painlessly with the help of doctors.
~
South Korea should also legalize assisted euthanasia for elderly people and terminally ill. It would also help the poor elderly people who have not saved any money for retirement and can no longer work.
@@johnd6099 that's sweet in a messed up kind of way
Chun man ye 🥰
She was always like that like in her first story on AB
“So we’re giving you 20,000 more”
Her: 😱 *”I can help a lot of others with that money.”*
And that is the difference from someone who has very little to someone who has a lot. All they want to do is share, so that no one is ever in her position. The level of empathy of people who go through a lot honestly warms my heart. ❤️
She has a golden heart. I was shocked for a bit when she said that. I hope she will use it on herself, because she really really deserves it :) Her smile is so bright...
i was so shook
that resonated so hard with me bc i'm in a very similar position. when i get money i spend it on my grandma and my friends. they tell me not to, but all i can think about is taking care of them the way i wish others would have cared for or helped me. i feel like i have a lot in common with madame yoo. if she was my grandmother, i would never have allowed her to live that way. big hearts recognize other big hearts.
Ondrea Carmine you have a golden heart, you just be you, good things will follow your every step ❤️
Yep...poor usually help more..they get it..middle class and poor usually tip more too..shame
I just wish her children won’t show up all of the sudden and try to take her money. A lady nice like her will definitely give it to them.
And that happens a lot .
I'm sure they already shows up... 😂😂
Yes, I agree with you. I think that's why Asian Boss gave the money monthly rather than gave all of the money at the beginning. And they contacted her regularly
👌
exactly and they recall that they have mother....
Ok
I think the sad part is she is just one in many.
This I kept thinking. Who lives behind the other doors? What's their mold situation like? Are they okay? How desperate are their situations that they cant help an elderly neighbor either?
At least one of them got helps..
Yes :( I’m glad Asian boss was able to help even one. They are so sweet.
so? one less sad people on earth,, they did their part helping, other people should do their part as well.
At least they help one of many poor people, and made this as an inspiration for others to do the same thing
When AsianBoss cares for her more than her 5 children
Gemma Joikhun I’m sure that they are probably also struggling financially. People like to her success stories about how poor people become successful, when statistics say that poor people tend to stay poor. And assuming her kids have children, I understand why they might not be able to financially help or have the time to help when they’re on 2 jobs each trying to make ends meet.

@@soyoungieee No its true. Her place has lots of trash because of hoarding. She mostly relies on collecting cardboard boxes but that does not mean her place has to get to that state of being piled with trash/food waste. My grandma was a hoarder, they cannot help it. I cleaned my grandma's room many times before but the thing is she kept hoarding more afterwards. If anything, the elderly especially those who hoard needs someone to take care of them. Her kids needs to be there or someone else willing to. Tho assisted suicide is a bit too much for advice.

The architect was really considerate to the grandmother, good work everyone...
Jack Jones yes!! Actually architects need to be considerate for the people theyre designing for so she really is a good one 💖
we need more people like her. she didn’t deserve to live her life before the makeover
I learned from Hoarders that removing items like trash can really traumatize a person. I like that she took that into consideration
true, she considers that grandma might fall back to hoarding habit and reserve some storage spaces to use. the thing i'm questioning is those high shelves and 2 level fridge, how will she be able to access it. perhaps they provide a step ladder as well
@@somegirl5rock I think that it was that and the fact that she sells trash - it was likely a bit of a Rainy Day fund for her, like for when she doesn't find enough to sell for a while, she has what's in her house - but not all of that could be sold, so that was just another bit of the hoarding there.
She may be poor in money but she’s wealthy in laughs.
Sending lots of love from the Philippines 🇵🇭
Glad they're rationing the $20K to her.
Have a sneaky suspicion she's giving the money to her dead beat kids.
She's so selfless.

I didn't know she had kids too, I must've overlooked that. She has such bad what looks like, osteoporosis, but I'm not sure...I hope she is getting health care :(.
2K dollars
Yeah she was saying she spent all of the 2k that was initially given to her and was praying on how to get it back.
i seriously question her children how could they be so heartless to the woman who gave them life i mean my god one of them could at least open up their home to her and take care of her just as she did for them
I know right, it's really heartbreaking 😭
some grandparents insist on being left alone, just like my grandma.
She is adorable and it breaks my heart that she is left alone, but then again, just because someone gave life to you doesn’t mean they are good for you...Some parents gave their kids a lot of trauma. Though Madame Yoo is really sweet and I’ll give her the world if I could haha
@@em-wv6hb that is true. We don't know the truth of Madame Yoo but it's possible. Although, I shouldn't assume or judge and I'm sure Madame yoo is a real sweetheart. and the rich would rather line their coffers than see us be comfortable. Capitalist pig dogs make me sick
Most of the rich does charity because they "have" to. And here we have the poor who has almost nothing to give but is willing to give the little of what they have.
Gosh, her first thought was helping others. This generation of Koreans have seen SUPER hard times and they know how tough life is!
Not gonna lie, that renovation was a lot better than expected. Went from a squatter house to a suburban household.
It was, and from the simple explenation of what they said it would be, I was surprised. I hope it treats her well for all her years to come.
Only thing that confused me is that they didn't fix the cupboards, probably because they spent all the money on ventilation and heating
@@cenketsu Well, they are giving her an "allowance" of sorts portioning the money that was donated to help her - it's something they can do later with that. With only 3 days to do it, I think they probably focused on the most important things & making sure things were clean, accessible, & homey/livable to improve her conditions & mood the best they could immediately - and sort out the smaller things later.
The problem i that she accumulates to much trash too

True that. ^^
I fear that her children will talk her into giving them a lot of the money. No respect for them at all...

It's better than being homeless.
@@user-pi5xz5je4y you're such a heartless thing
Unsolvable Captcha wae?! poor grandma, she raises 5 kids and when her kids grow up they let her live in this kind of environment?
Unsolvable Captcha in the first place the kids shouldn’t have treated their mother like this. those people probably also thought that ‘it’s better than being homeless’. would you let your own mother live in this kind of condition? you shouldn’t think that way. majority of our mothers bring us up, they do everything to make sure that we survive. when we were babies, we were at our most vulnerable and it was our parents that protected us. anything we have in the future is because of our parents. don’t think that because we work it’s ours. they worked our entire childhood, their money went to our shelter, food, education, clothes and whatever junk we wanted as well. if people said ‘that’s their job, it’s their responsibility’ well, they could’ve given us up or worse. how they treat their kids is up to them and you have no say, you can talk back and get a smack in the face. but if they raise you with love and compassion, gave you what you needed and more, i think it’s only fair that you at the very least, treated them with respect and not just toss them aside.
Me before this vid: I'm a bit broke.
Me after this vid: what gave me the right to say that.

Lan Ster Yup.
I started crying when I saw this comment. That’s how privileged I am and I didn’t even think about it when I saw this video. I live in a nice house whilst she was struggling to just even support herself. This opened up a new view for me because of how she is living at her age. I was taught to take care of my elders because they took care of me but her children does not seem to mind her living the kind of life style she used to be living in
I know what you mean. I saw a child around four in rags selling gum in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. Every time I get to feeling poor I remember that child and remember how blessed I really am.
She's such a doll. It breaks my heart that she has 5 kids and cares so much for them, yet not once since her online journey have we seen a single one of them. They don't have a lot of time left to enjoy her sunshine presence in this world and they don't even help her or see her. Inexcusable.

From all abused adult children /adult children of narcissistic parents, shut up. Just because someone has a happy smile doesn't mean they're a Saint or an Angel. Please remember this.
@SariennMusic73 indeed, it definitely crossed my mind. Either the kids are heartless c**ts, or they suffered during their childhood. Its a harsh thought to some, but definitely possible. I hope you're doing well yourself truly.

She said she don't earn much, but her kids were struggling so she continued to collect boxes even after the guy helped her and gave her money. And she even doesn't want to be a burden for them. I believe this is why Asian Boss emphasized that the money will be given to her in increments over time, so that it is used on her. Good on him for making sure she uses it on herself.

Ryan you should be more respectful
This warms my heart knowing that there is people who care for her. Being in that environment sucks, so I’m so happy that she got to get a better place during the pandemic.
When I lived in South Korea I met a grandma like this one while waiting for a bus. She told me I reminded her of her daughter who had been her only child taking care of her, though it sounds like she had passed from the way she spoke of her. She said her son had become a great man and didn't have time for his mother. Despite her situation she spoke fondly of her children despite the fact that she didn't see them often and lived alone. It really broke my heart and I missed my bus on purpose to stay with her. She was so sweet. As someone who can barely go a day without talking to my parents (even when I lived abroad) it is hard for me to accept. I want to take care of my parents and show them all the love that they showed me growing up.
SumimaSim , it sounds like you’re a very good daughter. Your parents are blessed.☺️
@@pwallace5359 That's very sweet of you to say that. Thank you ♥♥♥
I never understand how children can stay away from their parents while knowing that they’re alone/lonely. I still live at home with my dad and I already feel bad when I stay at my boyfriends house for more than 2-3 nights..
The first thing i worried about is them throwing things away without her permission I am so glad the architect mentioned asking for her permission.
yeah I know what you mean. :/
I remember visiting my relatives at Vietnam and although they live in the middle class I'd say, my grandma still keeps tissues she finds in order to sell them (she doesn't go out often btw).
And I'm not quite sure whether my aunt has thrown away a few of them but I surely know that she complained about it....
@@ciela9808 I know being from a poor family as well as my bf who is poor. You often become a hoarder because you never know when you might need that. Hoarding happens a lot among poor and middle class. When I clean my room and my bf helps me hes like "can this be thrown out" I often tell him no i might need that. I have gotten better as I have learned keeping less is more beneficial than more but he still keeps everything its difficult but thats why I really hoped they asked for permission cause i wouldnt want someone throwing out my stuff and I could only imagine thats how she felt.
Oh that gave me major anxiety too!
I hope the owner doesn’t remove her now that they’ve renovated the place to get someone who would pay more.
hope not! since asianboss will be regularly checking in on her, i dont think they would.
Dude that's what I was thinking
With the lovely people who donated for her, i dont think it'll happen.
I was thinking the same exact thing, did she own the place or is she renting it, and it makes me wonder what type of landlords will rent out such a place to..just about anyone.
If she rents the place, I am sure Asianboss contact the landlord before making the changes, don't worry about a thing.
The architect/project manager has such a calming and "flowy?" voice... Could listen to her all day
The architect was fantastic, too. She was so respectful of Madame’s habits and lifestyle and tailored her renovation to match with 0% judgement, 100% professionalism and empathy 😊
That is what professionalism truly is.
True.
Extremely difficult job for her -- because Madame Yoo is a borderline hoarder. I worry that she'll clutter up the apartment again with her gatherings.
@@Briguy1027 you're not the only one who's concerned. The architect lady even worries that too because of Yoo's hoarding habits.
Isnt that more of an interior designer ?
If I ever let my mother get in this condition I couldn’t and wouldn’t be able to live with myself.
me too man! i feel ya
Right? That's what I was thinking. My mother is also a very hard working woman who gave everything she had to my brother and I and kept very little for herself. I couldn't imagine not giving everything I have back to her the same way she did for me. I don't understand how some people can just abandon their parents like that.
I agree but I also thought we do not know what conditions her children are living in
Dewberry150 I may not be the richest person, but I make damn sure my mom has everything she needs.

I was thinking the same thing
Well done guys , the woman is so humble I feel pity for her , I wish her all the best to her and all the elders that need help in the world. Respect our elders always
I hope South Korea or any other countries never legalizes assisted suicide for the elderly and terminally ill people. Instead of encouraging these people to commit suicide and making it seem like they're better off dead, the government should take action and find another solution. All lives and those from any stage of life are precious, from unborn to the elderly. :)
@briana higgins
I am not having any kids of my own so after I retire and can no longer take care of myself anymore then I will donate all my money to charity and then I will go to Belgium to get assisted euthanasia.
@@JD-kp6pt Instead of society pressuring these people to commit suicide, a better solution would be helping them to improve their living situation.
@briana higgins
Legalizing assisted euthanasia is not "pressuring people to commit suicide". It is just giving them the option.

I’m glad the money will be given to her a little at a time. She has 5 children so I’m always worried that they’ll try to take her money.
Indeed. The fact that they haven’t helped her at all now that they’ve all grown up is incredibly sad. Maybe they’re not in such good conditions either, but surely all five of them are not living like her. She spent time and energy raising them and she’s still so cheerful. I was thinking about her the other day, wondering how she's doing. This makes me happy that you helped her once again. Her new home looks lovely.
Me, too. I was thinking about weather in Seoul and Madame Yoo’s basement room When I showed my 82-yr-old mother her first video. I was silently praying for someone to help her renovate the place. "I can help a lot of others with that money." WOW! Unselfish - even in her condition.
Selflessness
I love how they considered how the grandmas life style wouldn’t change. So instead of having her change they made it suitable to her lifestyle
This is the reason, why you have to continue broadcasting and revealing all the truth. Your concept is really great, I commend you Asian Boss. I believe in many years to come you will become more powerful company that would enlighten people and uncover the lies.
She looked like she enjoyed sitting on that couch in the hotel darn give her a couch.
I don't understand why they didn't give her a couch and chairs.
Or a bed? Does she sleep on the floor?!
asexieru you dont understand korean culture or east asian culture in general, couches are a western concept. We traditionally sleep on the wooden floor as its comfortable and with the ondol floor heating in winter is nice. Apartments are often too small like hers to fit a full on couch especially through the door
Older Korean people use a sofa as a place to lean against. I have had many older Korean people in my house and rarely did they actually sit on the couch.
Hopefully some people can stop by and talk to her - that is what make her happy. If I still lived in Korea I would. I learned a lot from the older people I met in Korea (I am fairly fluent in Korean).
People like her are the heart and soul of Korea.
I do wonder what happened to her children. Out of 5 there should have been 1 or 2 that were reasonably successful and could give back to Mom. I won't judge as I don't know the history...
Yes please.

@milixe1 i agree
Everyone was so respectful and accepting of her and her ways. In America they would throw her on hoarders and show her family berate her. This is so lovely
What I've seen is, there are good people and bad people. Nothing to do with any specific country, community, race or other thing.
Gagan That's true, but respect for others is very different between the two countries.
Not necessarily true there's good people and there's bad people all around because here in America there's a show called fix my house property prospects Etc there's multiple shows and guess what the United States was the first ones to come out with those show so other countries Etc I just doing shows like it there selves but I get what you saying I really do but again I say there's good and bad all around so don't be so quick to label one Pacific Place be more open-minded than that or at least try to be because I know it can be hard giving the world that we live in today
Her back probably hurts too much to clean every day. I have cancer and I have to do my cleaning on days when I feel better and have more energy.
