I think the biggest problem with the space other than the lack of windows and ban on guests (poor people need love too, if not more so) is the thickness of the walls. If the walls were thicker the beds and desks could fold up into them and shelf / drawer space could also be created, leaving room for an office chair and maybe even a sofa. Design can go a long way in making a place more comfortable. Hope they clean that window. What is amazing about the space is the free laundry, filtered water, rice, kimchi, and rooftop access. I love that they thought about these things because it actually shows that they care (as well as them keeping the building clean and maintained) and aren't there simply to nickel and dime the poor. I love and appreciate that they are trying their best. Good video over all and hope to see you all make more videos together in the future.

So this is like a blast in the past and memory lane walk for me, and I’ve enjoyed watching it so much. In fact I couldn’t stop laughing at both your quirky commentaries. When one is poor with a goal, there is no such thing as inconvenience. One does what it takes to get out of it to move up to a better standard of life. So very penny counts. This apartment has generous free amenities that can really pile up someone’s ability at saving. Thanks for this video. To some young people just starting out, youre doing critical public service to them which they could appreciate. So, everyone stays quiet for those studying. The Gosi Examination refers to a high-level national examination, which was previously reserved for level 5 civil servants. If you pass this exam, you can become a high-ranking civil servant. There are three types of examinations: administration, judiciary, and foreign affairs. Even now, it is a Korean system that allows even poor people to become high-ranking public officials if they pass this exam.
I remember looking at Goshiwons in Busan and they were like $300-400 a month back in 2013, so this one is a great deal. The thing about Korea is there are so many 24 hour / late night spaces outside your home, (like PC rooms, cafes , restaurants) all you really need your apartment for is sleeping.
$175 is about 250,000 won, which is very cheap even 10 years ago. Now, the prices in Korea are so high that I can't believe there is a $175.00 Gosiwon. I lived in a very affordable neighborhood outside of Seoul for about two months 10 years ago, and it cost about $200 at that time. Also, in certain areas of Busan or Seoul, the examination center itself is about the same price as the surrounding studio apartment because of tourists or test takers (people who go to the camp academy to take the national exam). It might be a little awkward because it's a translator, so please understand :)
I've just watched the video again. The place where that gosiwon is located is similar to the area I visited 10 years ago. (The area is called Gyeonggi-do, surrounding Seoul.) The buildings and facilities are old, but I can feel that they are managed incredibly neatly, even if they weren't, $175 is a reasonable price, and it seems like a very good condition because the boss cares a lot about it.

I'd say this is a very honest living service suited for students and people who are trying to get by. Students can study and do work in libraries and use the space to sleep.

One thing I like about Korea is that there are cheap living options. Not just goshiwon, but in many cities you can get studio apartments for dirt cheap as well. They aren't great places, but they are better than having to live with roommates or in hostels like in my home country, Canada, where in many cities there isn't even the option of small cheap living spaces.
I’m in Ontario and I just found a place last month that is like a studio. I have a bathroom, bedroom and a half kitchen (only fridge so I use a toaster oven, hot plate, rice cooker, deep fryer, air fryer and slow cooker) right next to my bedroom. It’s $1000 a month and to me that seems like a great deal.
@@realsies9387 Yeah, that's rough. I'm from southern Alberta and I remember from 2015-2018 I was able to rent a 2 bedroom house, with a good size yard and a garage for under $1000 per month. I went to Korea in 2018 and came back in 2022. I stayed for 6 months and ended up going back to Korea because I just couldn't afford to live in Canada anymore.
Honestly, for the location, wifi, and security alone, $175 is a good price. especially in this economy. i also only ever had good experiences from small family-run businesses.

Korea also has other housing solutions that are cheap such as 24 hour spas/gyms where you can sleep overnight in a common room and put a mat down for 7 usd/night. They have everything you need such as internet computer room, restaurant or vending machines and of course, lockers and gym/spa/shower facilities.
I love the cozy atmosphere in this small apartment/hotel! I love that the owners are the maintenance and that the tenants are all so respectful of the common space. I believe that a small town feeling is here and if I am visiting the area, I would enjoy a stay!
Goshiwon are pretty decent. It has security and free basic needs: rice, ref, water, has a clean common toilet and bath. All good. We can thrive here!!!
We desperately need accommodation like this in London. One thing I miss about my time in Seoul is my Goshiwon. My Goshiwon had it's own shower too. And it was so cheap compared to literally anything else here in London that you can rent.

Instead of being homeless, this option is really good to have for low income people. Their family that owns the Goshiwon tries their best to provide a respectable way of living given what they have -- even providing free rice & kimchi (can be a meal already and save you from hunger if you realy don't have money left), wifi, laundry with free detergent, own personal mini ref and tv. You can just go to a library during the day to study or go to work, and still have a decent and safe shelter to come home to at night. When she said "Mom said we need to be like a hotel", i admired them coz they want to give a decent place to stay with the structure that they have. Lived in goshiwons for years as a student. I honestly loved it as I like small rooms and it makes me feel safe. The only downside was most of the places has no windows, so if a fire starts.....your dead! but except that, I loved it. Mostly free rice, ramyeon and kimchi. yum
One small thing which will make a real improvement, change the wardrobe door hinge to the side near the wall so that it is easier to access. These rooms are the lifeline of many and it is good to see the owners making up a real effort to keep the place clean and decent despite the low low rent so that they are not living in slum conditions. Keep it up.
Really good for cheap housing. Honestly amazing compared to options in other parts of the world. Free food and utilities, you gotta pay for that separately in other countries.
*Not all go gosiwon are like this!!* Years ago before living in Korea I went there for a vacation, a long vacation… stayed for 2 months. Staying that long in hotels would just not be possible and I knew about gosiwon before I went. I had some help searching for and reserving a room from a Korean speaker. When I got there the pictures were deceiving, it was so dirty and you definitely don’t understand just how small it is until you get there. I stuck it out as I only stayed a month then stayed with a friend in busan, and used air bnb in Jeju and Seoul afterward. It really is just a place to sleep temporarily, it’s nice to see how well your friends family maintains theirs but as a kinda warning to any foreigners planning a vacation you really should visit the site beforehand if you’re looking to stay in a gosiwon.
This goshiwon could really help a lot of people to recover from their financial struggles and when able, they could then transfer to a regular apartment. This is really nice. ❤
This type of business is quite common around the world. Some will simply call them dormitory or room rentals. What surprises me the most is the lack of egress windows (in case of a fire) and the size. As in my jurisdiction a (bed) room can't be window less nor smaller than 81 sq ft. The lay out is very 2 dimensional, most places now rise the bed (4-5 ft of the ground) and offer a work desk and more storage underneath. By elevating the bed you end up adding almost 15-20sq ft and they could thicken the walls (insulation/soundproofing) without losing more living space.

Small studio apartments are the most affordable, but you only get so much space that you always have to practice your surroundings before you really know the place firsthand.
Never heard of a goshiwon before (I'm in Canada). It's not so bad and very reasonably priced. At least the tenants are not homeless and out on the streets. The tour was very interesting and fun, and you both speak very good English! Good luck!

this tiny room was traditionally for country students who came to Seoul to study for the national exams like Bar Exam under a small budget. Nowadays, Gosiwon or tiny room is rented by foreign Laborers or tourists under a tight budget in addition to students for all kinds of big exams.

I have a bathroom, bedroom and a half kitchen (only fridge so I use a toaster oven, hot plate, rice cooker, deep fryer, air fryer and slow cooker) right next to my bedroom. It’s $1000 a month and to me that seems like a great deal.
@@realsies9387 Yeah, that's rough. I'm from southern Alberta and I remember from 2015-2018 I was able to rent a 2 bedroom house, with a good size yard and a garage for under $1000 per month. I went to Korea in 2018 and came back in 2022. I stayed for 6 months and ended up going back to Korea because I just couldn't afford to live in Canada anymore.

I understand the room seem claustrophobic but its $175 per MONTH!! with free rice, kimchi, detergen, laundry, water to drink, internet, electricity, clean bathroom. Korea also has other housing solutions that are cheap such as 24 hour spas/gyms where you can sleep overnight in a common room and put a mat down for 7 usd/night. They have everything you need such as internet computer room, restaurant or vending machines and of course, lockers and gym/spa/shower facilities.

I love the cozy atmosphere in this small apartment/hotel! I love that the owners are the maintenance and that the tenants are all so respectful of the common space. I believe that a small town feeling is here and if I am visiting the area, I would enjoy a stay!

Goshiwon are pretty decent. It has security and free basic needs: rice, ref, water, has a clean common toilet and bath. All good. We can thrive here!!!

We desperately need accommodation like this in London. One thing I miss about my time in Seoul is my Goshiwon. My Goshiwon had it's own shower too. And it was so cheap compared to literally anything else here in London that you can rent.
Won't work in western countries . people simply don't respect each other's privacy, coupled with poor behavior will make communal rental places like this into trash

Instead of being homeless, this option is really good to have for low income people.
Their family that owns the Goshiwon tries their best to provide a respectable way of living given what they have -- even providing free rice & kimchi (can be a meal already and save you from hunger if you realy don't have money left), wifi, laundry with free detergent, own personal mini ref and tv. You can just go to a library during the day to study or go to work, and still have a decent and safe shelter to come home to at night.

Lived in goshiwons for years as a student. I honestly loved it as I like small rooms and it makes me feel safe. The only downside was most of the places has no windows, so if a fire starts.....your dead! but except that, I loved it. Mostly free rice, ramyeon and kimchi. yum

One small thing which will make a real improvement, change the wardrobe door hinge to the side near the wall so that it is easier to access. These rooms are the lifeline of many and it is good to see the owners making up a real effort to keep the place clean and decent despite the low low rent so that they are not living in slum conditions. Keep it up.
Really good for cheap housing. Honestly amazing compared to options in other parts of the world. Free food and utilities, you gotta pay for that separately in other countries.

*Not all go gosiwon are like this!!* Years ago before living in Korea I went there for a vacation, a long vacation… stayed for 2 months. Staying that long in hotels would just not be possible and I knew about gosiwon before I went. I had some help searching for and reserving a room from a Korean speaker. When I got there the pictures were deceiving, it was so dirty and you definitely don’t understand just how small it is until you get there. I stuck it out as I only stayed a month then stayed with a friend in busan, and used air bnb in Jeju and Seoul afterward. It really is just a place to sleep temporarily, it’s nice to see how well your friends family maintains theirs but as a kinda warning to any foreigners planning a vacation you really should visit the site beforehand if you’re looking to stay in a gosiwon.
I'd pay an extra 100 for the room with the opening window. That's a game changer for your sanity. It seems like theres not neighbors beside it.

This type of business is quite common around the world. Some will simply call them dormitory or room rentals. What surprises me the most is the lack of egress windows (in case of a fire) and the size. As in my jurisdiction a (bed) room can't be window less nor smaller than 81 sq ft.
The lay out is very 2 dimensional, most places now rise the bed (4-5 ft of the ground) and offer a work desk and more storage underneath. By elevating the bed you end up adding almost 15-20sq ft and they could thicken the walls (insulation/soundproofing) without losing more living space.
Watching this I feel very blessed to have my small unit with my own bathroom and kitchen.

Never heard of a goshiwon before (I'm in Canada). It's not so bad and very reasonably priced. At least the tenants are not homeless and out on the streets. The tour was very interesting and fun, and you both speak very good English! Good luck!

this tiny room was traditionally for country students who came to Seoul to study for the national exams like Bar Exam under a small budget. Nowadays, Gosiwon or tiny room is rented by foreign Laborers or tourists under a tight budget in addition to students for all kinds of big exams.

I stayed in a goshiwon and Seoul, and while it wasn’t 175/month, it was definitely an experience I will never forget. It was AWESOME!
i wish they had these cheap basic rooms in the west. these probably keep a lot of people off the streets. if you're a student or a low earner on a tight budget, what more do you need? Though this set up could only work in places like Korea or Japan. These cheap rooms would attract nothing but trouble in America and other western countries.
