    Hard to believe this was made the same year as my Miata. I played the arcade game F355 Challenge which was amazing. It had 3 screens to see all around you, and allowed you to -- at your own peril -- disable all the video game stability controls and pilot the car as it was meant to be. They developed it with a race driver of the F355, whom gave it their blessing. Would love to have one of these.

    In the late 90’s I was wearing hearing protection while mowing the lawn of a commercial storage facility. I heard the roaring sound of what I thought was a jet aircraft and I looked up from the lawn only to see a red Ferrari 355 eastbound on the nearby 4 lane divided highway. The 355 was in the left lane passing other cars as if they were standing still. I’m guessing it was going at least 120mph in what was at that time a 60mph zone.

    When you mentioned Pininfarina, it took me back to 1981 when I was a lad of 25 years. I had the opportunity to acquire a brand new 1981 Fiat Spider 2000. It had both the Fiat badge as well as the Pininfarina badge. My friend at the time said this is the same coach builder for Ferrari. A little later Pininfarina produced basically the same car without the Fiat badge for a lot more money. One of my Chefs had the same car as well and we used to race them all over South Jersey, Philly, and especially Bucks County PA. Loved Bucks, awesome winding roads, and one lane bridges. When that car ran(always in the shop)it was beautiful, wind in your face awesome. Doug, maybe you will see one and want to review it. There was even a turbo model for the 2.0L double overhead valve power plant. That would be a rare find because a lot of the turbo Fiats got wrecked.

    • @TORQUENDB
      @TORQUENDB ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@NeutralinoI think a lot of the unreliability complaints come from the number of manufacturer defects (factory exhaust headers WILL melt, soft valve guides on early cars, spider potentiometer for the top, F1 vacuum pumps can fail), and infrequently driven cars. My dad has owned a 98 355 F1 for 13 years, and yes, the maintenance is expensive. But in my experience it is not unreliable when driven regularly. I put about 10k miles on it in the first 5 years he owned it and the only actual problem we ever had was a coolant leak. It's been driven hard the whole time, too. Always rev it out to 8500 after warming it up.

    Good overview - I agree with almost all of it. "It isn't a Porsche" is pretty much the reason I got a 355 - not because I dislike Porsches, I have several, but because of variety. And also the steering is pretty weak - both in terms of feel and steering wheel angle... And yes, they do have maintenance issues all the time - and not just the belt changes, headers and guides - I have had damper actuator issues, HVAC issues, fuel distribution and sensor issues. Overall, I probably do 2-3X more maintenance on my one F355 as I do on my 5 Porsches and 1 Aston Martin combined... But none of it has been terrible or expensive, just a lot of little things. If that doesn't scare you, well, if you have the means, I highly recommend it.

    I've recently been wondering if in reality the 348 would be the one to have for the steering and chassis feedback compared to the 355, but this is a good reminder of just how gorgeous the 355 is. It must be possible to replicate the 348's steering in this because the size and weight are similar/identical and front end (at least) geometry probably no different. Also, maybe...some lovely passive suspension setup but that would depend on how the 355 feels, it might already be great. I will never know! But thanks Doug, this love letter of a video has put the 355 back in strong contention for my fantasy garage!

      The 355 was available with a manual rack but almost nobody ordered it that way. The steering on a 355 is weighted perfectly when driven hard imo, I wouldn't change it. The chassis is stiffer than a 348... The real problems with a 355 are the seating position and the brakes which are not up to handling modern rubber. Otherwise it's near perfect.

    The engine doesn’t have to come for the cam belt replacement. The easier alternative method is to remove the fuel tank, and that provides the space needed to access the cam belts. The motor only needs to be lifted slightly with a floor jack (if you’re doing the service with the car on jack stands), or a screw jack (if the car is on a car lift) to allow clearance over the metal cross brace to fit a socket onto the crank pulley bolt.

    My then cousin-in-law drove for Repsol/Ferrari in the 1994 24 Hrs. of Le Mans. Ferrari had promised its drivers each an F355 if they finished the race (something Ferrari had lately had trouble with), and they did.
    His brand-new F355 is still the only Ferrari I've ever been in: he gave me a ride around the outskirts of Sanlúcar de Barrameda in southern Spain shortly after he'd taken delivery. He couldn't really open the taps as it was still in its break-in period, but super-cool nevertheless. His was the coupe and I think even more beautiful than the spider...
    He totaled it on a French autopiste maybe a year later: all gone.

      Yes. I should clarify and say it was totaled: apparently a big truck failed to see him and smooshed into him while changing lanes, with disastrous results.
      A thing I noticed on that drive in the countryside around Sanlúcar: at some point he had to defog the windshield in the crappy weather, and the defogging was just instantaneous. I realized that the defogger was harnessing the air conditioning, which is fairly common nowadays, but which I'd never seen before. The opening of the F355 is cool not weird. A low seating position is essential in a car that's only 116 cm high - a Porsche 911 is higher than 130 cm. The tool kit has to be fixed with a leather strip. Belt maintenance ist not every three, but every four years - expensive enough (and may not always cost 10000 bucks, but even close to). But, Dear Doug, your words in the part "Driving Experiences" are gorgeous...Greetings from a longtime owner of a 95 F355 GTS in rosso corsa/crema nero. Btw. Brilliant review.....This guy is absolutely spot on in his appraisal of the F355. Never was a fan of the drop-top. It lost some of the beautiful Pininfarina coupe styling.
    I bought a white one to replace my white Testarossa (which I kept for my collection). I loved every minute of it, except the maintenance. It was so labour-intensive (Ferrari admit that) that I must have spent a lot more than the purchase price on maintenance throughout the years! It was ludicrous!! They sorted that out with the F430 onwards, thankfully.
    I didn't replace it till I got a 458 (white again).
    All the others inbetween just didn't give me the Fizz. It's just so beautiful! Yes, it's slow, not particularly good handling and the steering and brakes not much better than my 1967 330 GTS, but that's not the point! It was the smile on my face!😊 I still get in it and drive it on special occasions, and the looks I get is just priceless. Only my Testarossa gets more attention.
    So I recommend, if you can, definitely buy one......only have very deep pockets to keep it going!
