    I love the way the microphone captured the sound of the gear shifts on the gated manual. To me (and probably most people), Ferraris have always been about the special noises they make, and aside from the engine, the gear changes of that famous gated manual are my favourite. Great video👍👍

    Still think the 355 is the most beautiful automobile ever designed, and the greatest sounding Ferrari ever. I still remember when I first saw it in 'Goldeneye' in 1995 and have been in love ever since.

    The 355 has a delicacy to it unknown from modern day Ferraris. Also that metallic wail and intake noise of the small V8 is unmatched today especially with the turbocharged engines.

      Interesting thought. All I know is there are only a few cars that can sing like the F355 engine. A straight piped Porsche GT is close or the Ferrari F50. The newer Ford GT350 also has a V8 that revs to 8000rpm but it still doesn't sound like the F355.
      Oh, but there is one that I'll put at a super close second to the F355, a 4 rotor mazda R26b engine. That thing is also a screamer.

    The 360 represents the best of two worlds: it’s modern yet visceral with minimal driver aides. The manual 360 represents the peak for Ferrari before the computers all drove the cars.

    • @mamovaka
      @mamovaka ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always consider getting another 360, this time a manual.. likely still a coupe.. however the F430 might be the better choice on paper with the extra 90hp and the CHAIN driven (no belts to replace) engine block.. so a 430 Manual may be the peak.. problem is the 360 IMO is much more beautiful than a F430.. if I cannot get stick i'd probably get the 458 as the dual clutch lasts forever. trust me.. nothing more frustrating than a clutch going before it's time.. which in a normal cart is like at least 50-80k miles.

    I would want the car that doesn't need an engine-out service (the 360). But if you buy a Ferrari, you have to be prepared to pay through the nose for service. These cars have become a lot more economical to buy, but the service costs haven't gone down at all. I've never thought the cost of the cars was outrageous, it was the cost of ownership that has scared me off.

    I had a similar choice. Looked at early carb 308s but did not find the right car. 348s are not as good value now but I like them.
    I appreciate there is a lot of love for the F355 here but for me they lack the pure design beauty of the 360. I can't help thinking MR2 when I look at a F355.
    The 360 feels better built, yet retains a simple elegance compared to the F430 onwards.
    I bought a silver 360 manual. Its sound from the cockpit is stunning when pressing on, yet a perfectly usable distance machine when on a constant throttle.
    The F430 by contrast is frustratingly loud all the time so you miss the thrill factor as the revs rise.
    For me the 360 is just the perfect car.

      Interesting to hear some of the considerations others make when purchasing a (semi-)classic Ferrari. I narrowed my search to either a 348 or a F355. I like the 308/328 design, but I just don’t fit in those. I really dig the wedge designs, so that dropped the 360 for me. And then, yes, I also could not quite shake off this MR2 vibe with the F355, yet that glorious engine... In the end, I bought a 348 because the strakes are just awesome, and it has unassisted steering, which is sensational. Still, I’d like to have that F355 engine... oh, decisions...

So different in terms of structure and generation. The 355 is a descendent of the original Dino of the 60s, and it’s frankly amazing how capable the car is, including a supple ride. One note; a 355 clutch change does not require engine out, ironically.

    The first car that I drove was my uncle's 1952 Willys. So a great car. By the way, I never used the transmission (I was 9 years old). (Edit: nice cars but I have to problems with them : 1st: money 🤣🤣, 2nd : too wide and low for my country and the roads where I love to drive. My best options will be: Suzuki Cappuccino, Mazda Miata, Fiat 500 Abarth, Suzuki Swift SPORT (we can buy them new in my country), Peugeot 206RC, Renault Clio SPORT, a Mini... all the small cars of that kind. By the way, I have two Ford Super Duty, a GMC Yukon GMT400 and a 1988 Monte Carlo LS, and on those roads, I prefer my 2018 Suzuki Alto 800, not fast, but really fun to drive "fast" on those kind of roads, because its 1.49m wide. By the way, the Alto 800 is a 0.8l 47hp car, and a really "organic" car, so you can feel and listen everything (transmission, tires, suspension, steering, engine, brakes), for me, fun is not going fast 😁😁, is enjoying everything about driving ). That's the question everyone should wake up to. I love them both, but the F360 a little bit more. If I could own one of the two it would be a red F360 Modena spider with the glass over the engine and black panel around the taillights. Possibly white interiors. It just screams OutRun.

    The 355 is just such a looker. Were I to be in the market for either it would be no contest. It would be pretty rare that I ever got to drive either of them at their limits, so I'll go for the prettier of the two. Plus the older any car gets the less geegaws and electronic nannies it's going to have. Less to break and less to interfere with driving the car.
    That's one lucky kid too. I learned how to drive a manual in an old truck with "three on the tree", which allowed me to drive my 1987 Toyota Corolla hatchback with the shifter in the correct place. I doubt I'll ever get to just smell the leather on a 360. Then the kid accidentally winds up being a race car driver. When people whine about "privelidge", I think this is the dude they're talking about. I'm not mad at him though. I'm happy for him. Some people squander their opportunities. He obviously didn't.

    Basically every Ferrari is a classic, they are made in such small numbers.
    The 355 is the end of an era. When the NSX came out in '91 it exposed the 348 (the 355s progenitor) for being unreliable and over priced. The 355 (which is an absolutely gorgeous car) had to carry on until the 360 could up the game. But if you own a 355 you are in the era of a $7k timing belt every two years. Budget and average of thousands a month in repairs unless you learn to do it yourself. It's a toy. It keeps time like a Rolex, which is to say you didn't buy it to keep time.
    The 360, when it came out was described as having BMW like fit, finish, and reliability. So it was really Ferrari having been influenced by a world that included the NSX. It's cool in its own way, but the 430 looks better and the 458 was an absolute seismic jump in performance. Which is why 360s can be had for well under $100k.
    I think you have to take the 355 or a manual 430 (which are insanely priced as the last manual Ferrari), I think the 360 is important but lost a bit in the lineage.

    • @JamesShunt
      @JamesShunt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s simply not true.. we’ve owned a 355 f1 GTB from 2003 until now, and it runs like a jewel , you DO NOT need to change the belts every 2 years, and it does not cost 7k for a regular service. Those are horror stories from very abused or neglected cars , if the owner knows a thing or two about mechanics, he’ll keep an eye on everything every time the car goes out , and every time it keeps stored. It’s not cheap to maintain... no, not at all. But a good example will make you a very happy man and driver , not to mention owner of one of the best sounding V8’s ever.

    • @bryantharris5914
      @bryantharris5914 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamesShunt Well you would know more than me as an actual owner, but I did mention that if you could work on your car yourself things were different. I still think the comment that the 328->348->F355 lineage was cumbersome on maintenance when compared to a Honda and it was the NSX that forced Ferrari to reboot with the 360.
      The F355 is a gorgeous car, as you said the motor sounds amazing. I'm sure it feels utterly special to drive.

    After much thought, I chose the F355 Berlinetta, and I have not looked back. Perhaps this is because I am a 80s child, however I believe as an aesthete, that the F355 design is the more alluring; juxtaposing feminine beauty with musculine strength like few Ferraris of the past. A Pininfarina masterpiece with an engine that is most soulful of the Ferrari V8s. The fact it drives so well, stimulates all 5 senses like no entry level V8 Ferrari before, or after (perhaps the 458 and Speciale excepted).

    The best Ferrari sports car is the all analog Ferrari 348. The 348 is the biggest bang for the buck in Ferraris. As the predecessor to the 355, the 348 has the Formula 1 exhaust note without the costly valve and active suspension issues the 355 has. Less is more in analog sports cars. Older is easier as most can work on a 348. Its now or never for 348 buyers.

    To me the 360 in the early 2000s is what the 348 was in the early 90s an unrefined first gen car.
    Whereas the 355 in the late 90s is like what the 430 was in the late 2000s a more refined 2nd gen car.
    The years 1999 / 2000 separate 2 completely different eras of cars.
    ~The 430 is the refined version of the 360.
    ~The 355 is the refined version of the 348.
    When looking at these 4 specific cars you can then rank them 430>355>360>348 while excluding the F50, Enzo, FXX which are super limited production run supercars that are just in a league of their own.
