    I'm your grandpa. I bought Cakewalk Express in 1999 - moved on to Sonar 6, 7 around 2009 and now Sonar 8 is on the way via eBay. But I'm demoing Reaper while I rebuild my studio. This never gets old. Do what you love and what you do best - the best you can. Live to learn and learn to live. Help the poor and hungry. Be happy

    I've used Sonar for a long time and I've been testing Cakewalk by BandLab for a week. No complaints so far. Everything looks familiar.
    I'm just not so sure about the free part. Still waiting for the shoe to drop. They spent a ton of money on that software. Something will
    definitely not be free in the future.

    • @Obedia
      @Obedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not really fair to make decisions about a business' model, if we do say so ourselves. BandLab is offering it free, and we've seen nothing to dictate that that would change.

    • @guidorehder6802
      @guidorehder6802 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let's hope it will stay that way. I'm a huge fan of Sonar and I'm not intending to switch to anything else.

    • @SocietateaAscendenta
      @SocietateaAscendenta 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So what if it will not be free anymore, someday.
      You will still have mixed, produced etc. a lot of Music on a FREE DAW by then.
      Then, Switch to something else or buy/Support them in the way they will present it to be done.
      I am trying to also get over the idea that I am not marrying a DAW for life.
      The world and choice is yours!
      THIS IS so inspiring right now and I cannot wait to arrive home and install this free beast!
      But, maybe next year or two, I might be switching to something else, to find new Inspiration.
      Artists Need that, I guess. Or?
      I also ask myself how can they do that: invest Money, buy the rights and then offer it for free.
      BUT, I guess is their Money, not mine, so why be concerned? :))
      NOW, everyone knows Brandlab!
      Maybe, they did not really throw away that Money out the window, after all...
      THANK YOU, Bandlab!

    Honest question(s): First, thanks for the video. I have subscribed and will continue to watch. I'm considering getting back in to recording after a long hiatus and I was shocked to learn that my chosen DAW and company were no more. My last era of recording was with a brand new Sonar 4( yeah, it's been a while ), and I loved it after demoing everything under the sun at that time. Let me tell you; the Cakewalk stuff was the ONLY program that had an intuitive feel in that you would click or right-click on an area on the DAW, and said action would produce pretty much what you expected it to. That was NOT the case with the other programs at the time. So, I have a bit of trust and respect for the Cakewalk product that I don't have for the competition.
    That said, I was guided by several articles and videos and testimonies to Studio One today and I went ahead and downloaded the demo. I have to say that right off the bat, S.O. was very reminiscent of Sonar in several respects and I believe that it is a program I could definitely get behind compared to the other current offerings on the market.
    So the million dollar question is this: if you were starting from scratch and didn't have to worry about transferring files and cross-integration, would you trust Band Lab to keep the ship moving forward and do right by a very respected DAW, or would you go ahead and move to a different platform that is already pulling ahead of the pack AND has compatibility with your fellow musicians who may be recording with Mac? Thanks!

    Good news for existing Sonar Platinum users - Follow the instructions in this video and the install routine will pick up all your existing Sonar settings. It took about 30mins and then the new version opened with all my existing instruments and settings carried over. All my 3rd party VST's, FX-Chain presets, Pro-channel add-ins, synths, ASIO audio i/o devices, etc., right down to the opening splash screen with all my previous projects listed. If it was not for the change of name in the title bar it appeared exactly the same as the last time I used the old version.
    Spent a couple of hours running previous projects, checking settings and preferences and that nothing had disappeared - It's all still there and working.
    Sonar by BandLab can run as a stand-alone application, you don't need to be logged in to BandLab to use it.
    The hardest part was finding how to navigate to the Sonar download page in BandLab and that's how I came to be watching this video. Thanks Obedia.

    Thank you for this tutorial. It's been a long time since this Steel Drummer street musicians hired me to work at his home studio back when Cakewalk called it ProAudio 7. We went through ProAudio 9 Sonar 1, 2, 8 and X2. Almost exclusively all the work for him was with Midi using Roland and Kurzweil sound modules. The one I like the most was SONAR 8, very intuitive for a professional musician using the staff view to edit Midi and sometime recording/editing audio. When Windows Vista, Windows 8 came up, SONAR 8 become very erratic and disappointing. For what I see, it looks like this Cakewalk by Bandlab could get me back into Cakewalk. Probably I'll be calling you sometime in the future, I do have keyboards and sound modules but I'm also interested in using software piano (samples), drums and bass to take it the next level to use them with creating music with Cakewalk - hopefully you can help me with that. Thank you.

    This looks great. I´m a Sonar Home Studio 7 user and my hard disk just crashed and recovery of some data is looking improbable: I somehow managed to install Sonar 7 again and run without registering. I´m a little hesitant at throwing the familiar interface completely. Do you know if Cakewalk by Bandlab will install without requiring me to uninstall the old version? Or more specifically : Will it automatically uninstall and replace it?

    First 3 minutes impressions:
    The bandlab installer unfortunately does not present any option, such as choosing directory or folder(s)
    Still, it seems my original Sonar Platinum, registered with Cakewalk, is still there, which is great.
    Cakewalk by BandLab discovered little less than half the plugins the original DAW finds. I'll have to investigate further, but I assume the By BandLand version only works with 64 bit plugins or only works with VST3.

    I redid the entire install, or for me, the update to my sonar to cakewalk by Bandlab. It downloaded and is working great. I removed my other comment because I was frustrated with it rejecting my password even though I would change it. I am a cyber security student and Army retired military intelligence and avionics tech so computers are not foreign to me at all. I have been using cakewalk since 1993 and it is has always been my preferred DAW because unlike other DAW's cakewalk has always worked with almost zero issues. I had cakewalk 3.0, 4.0, cakewalk pro audio 7, 8, 9, sonar producer 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and sonar professional. I have other DAWs such as Cubase sx, sx2, nuendo, reasons 5, Abelton live, studio one 3.5 pro, pro tools first and I still gravitate to sonar because of how super easy it is and it will always be my favorite workstation. the coding with a great audio interface sounds amazing in conjunction with the plug ins. I am glad people at Bandlab knew to keep a great product going. Thanks for your videos, it was your video that alerted me to do my update. I saw your phone number was 615 area code which tells me your company is in Nashville. I live in Clarksville. Thanks for your videos.

      Most everything is straightforward in Cakewalk. Depending on where you install, you can easily find the correct folders to place your loops/soundfonts, plugin dll's, etc.. You can also go to 'Preferences' and designate your personal placement of your folders to taste. I keep all my folders, etc in their own spaces so that I can easily find and use what I am looking for or what I am trying to accomplish. Hope this helps you.

  • @vanessajazp6341

    I've been one of the stodgy old holdouts - I've had Sonar going back to X2, and was(am) a user of Sonar Platinum as of last November when Gibson dumped us.
    My concerns about Cakewalk now being a free DAW from a music sharing company are a few.
    Copyright protection, obviously at the top of the list. I've read several complaints about this on various forums over the past few months.
    Functionality, a close second. Since the DAW is now not purely a Cakewalk product, but a BandLab product, is there a chance that future updates would actually result in operational downgrades? Cakewalk is a product now of a company that didn't start out as a designer of DAW's. How they adopt Cakewalk is understandably going to be for the best interests of their existing customer base and company plans. Will that coincide with the best interests of Cakewalk/Sonar users? Only time can really answer that one.
    Finally, will upgrades be aimed at making my experience with Cakewalk better, or will they be aimed at tailoring Cakewalk to become something totally different, for the sake of their music-sharing focus?
    What I have now, since the last Cakewalk update in Oct 2017, is a very functional DAW with lots of tools and options, etc etc. My chief concern is something being compromised somewhere.

    • @Obedia
      @Obedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your songs are always yours. BandLab wouldn't change that nor steal your songs. It is a BandLab product. Cakewalk isn't a company anymore. There is no chance of downgrades. Remember, Cakewalk was owned by a company before this that wasn't a designer of DAWs. That doesn't make a difference at all in the software. We don't know how to anticipate upgrades. We're not BandLab. We're not owned by them. We train people in the software. There's nothing to worry about. Just use it. If you don't like it, switch to another DAW.

    • @vanessajazp6341

    I currently have Sonar Platinum installed on my PC since 2005.
    What this new Cakewalk Bandlab edition seems to do is simply replace the name from Sonar to their name and nothing more.
    THAT'S SCARY.
    In this video the guy says seems nothing has changed.. but only the name as far as I can see.
    I might try it, but when working, I'll make sure I'm offline, yet still feel that stuff can be stolen once I'm online again.
    Is this CWLK Bandlab suppose to make things simpler, or maybe even BETTER?
    What gives?

    WHAT'S THE CATCH??? Is Bandlab going to own any music created on Cakewalk or in Bandlab? Nothing is really free!

    • @marmadukewinterbotham2599
      @marmadukewinterbotham2599 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No catch it would appear. I think Meng (the eminence grise behind BandLab) sees it as a way to encourage more users to the BandLab music collaboration platform, although how that itself becomes monetised in the future I'm not sure. Banner ads maybe?

    As an early user starting from 1996, and having bought almost every upgrade and stuff since then, I was expecting to find my purchases listed as they were in my usual Cakewalk User Account. I have my Sonar Producer Platinum (with the last update) currently installed, along with all the extras (Plugins suites, Soft synths, Samplers, libraries and so on) bought or inherited from CW. How can Bandlab take care of previous ownership if it is not listed anywhere? If so, how/where can I see it? I have not yet installed the new CWBB, as it is not needed for my day to day work, but there will come a time for that. I understand that common sense dictates to backup everything from now on, but will it be possible to get everything back from download, if needed? Did I miss something? My 10 days old Bandlab User Account does not reflect anything of my various CW ownership . I thought this would be taken care of by transferring the CW owners database to their own. From here, I understand I should initiate the process of installing a second Sonar incarnation to activate the licences transfer in my Bandlab account, but, based on your video, nothing but the CWBB splash would appear, right? Also, what if I keep things as they are, currently, for some time?
    I'm a bit sad that Bandlab may chose to not transfer the users forums as well, because this is such a great source of information that surpass what we could get from any User Support, usually, given the tech savvy users community.
    Thanks in advance, if you can answer all this!

    • @jppineau
      @jppineau 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Comment update : I still see and can access my CW account, I thought it was to be transferred. Will they hold both sites open? This is a confusing scheme but it answers to some of my concerns. The Forums are still there, but will the users keep two accounts alive for one software? Does this make sense?

    • @jppineau
      @jppineau 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Already seen and did a copy of my archives. What I am worrying about is the potential mess that having two websites to maintain, not to mention the Forums pages, will create as months pass for initial users. From their initial post, I thought that they were migrating everything in one place : Bandlab User Accounts. They never made clear that the now "Legacy" files would be left alone in the original site and still, this is based on Gibson's last info that's been published... If things remain the same, up to when Bandlab will bring a new version of CW to the market, there will be two websites to gather downloads from for a fresh install, in order to get everything we added to the core program during our relationship with Cakewalk. Not the best configuration, notwithstanding the vast amount of informations available in the Forums pages.

    • @Obedia
      @Obedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I've said in my most recent video, Cakewalk's CEO stated that when the company was being shut down, the servers would stay up and you'd have access to all your software, and be able to install, activate, and use it. They've made good on that, it all still works. Either way -- Sonar is gone, Cakewalk is the next level.

    • @davidroberts3262
      @davidroberts3262 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jppineau Bandlab Cakewalk is noticibly faster, less buggy and crashes less. You should seriously try it. It will leave your current Sonar installation alone.

  • @pathworker2010
    @pathworker2010 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    For anyone panning on downloading the bandlab version of sonar( now called cakewalk), you are NOT, i repeat NOT getting the full feature set that comes with sonar platinum. there are NO third party features included, plus you cannot use the supplementary features that would have been available with the original sonar platinum. as an example the theme editor for sonar DOES NOT WORK WITH CAKEWALK from bandlab.

    • @pathworker2010
      @pathworker2010 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      rest assured I will be watching this one closely. I'm not implying its a bad deal or anything like that, its a competent package for what you DO get at initial release. My concern is that a lot of impatient people who have never owned sonar before( but have probably used it on a friends system or something) will think they are getting the full package right off the bat without properly reading what bandlab have stated, )
      I will be looking forward to seeing what does get included once all the wrinkles are ironed out though. ;-)

      it's a solid, efficient DAW, and it's Free. Don't Need all the third party features (Bloat) to get things done. I used cakewalk (sonar) because it just work on any computer back in the day, when most computer where too slow for audio software.

    • @pathworker2010
      @pathworker2010 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      prior to this release by Badlab, I had not looked at sonar/cakewalk, however so far my experience has been good. I'm slowly importing material into the various folders to make up for the shortfall, ex I threw in a whole slew of exotic scales in the midi folder plus added some looped samples as well and its handling everything beautifully., I likely will not need addictive drums though as I can use reason for custom drum modelling and work that into cakewalk, THREE CHEERS FOR REWIRE!!!!

      @davidroberts3262 6 ปีที่แล้ว

No one is saying that you must buy anything -- you can use all of the plugins that come with Cakewalk right out the gate to work with the software. If you want to use your own VSTs and plugins, you can do that, too.
