Fun fact: Columbo was so popular in Romania that it almost caused a war. At the time, Romania had a government policy where they would limit how much imported television was broadcast on their networks, and Columbo was by far their most popular program. They ran out of episodes to watch because they had seen them all, and the public, convinced that the government was limiting how much American TV was being brought in and were holding out more, almost rioted. The CIA, in conjunction with the Romanian government, had to have Peter Falk deliver a taped speech to the Romanian people to let them know that they had, in fact, simply watched all of the Columbo content in existence, just to calm them all down.

One of the outstanding features of the Columbo series is the exceptionally high quality of the acting, especially since these episodes were produced relatively quickly at the time. Here you get not only the great Peter Falk and Martin Landau in two distinct roles, but you also get Jeanette Nolan (who adds some humor to the scene without taking any of the drama away) and a young Dabney Coleman as Columbo's lead assistant.

    • @filipvadas7602

Its kind of crazy to think these episodes were originally supposed to come out about 2 weeks apart and that it was only Peter Falk's refusal for such a schedule that made them settle for roughly a month per episode. It ended up being a blessing in disguise tho as Columbo as a whole has aged like a fine wine.

Almost every scene of this movie, when they try to make you think the same actor are two different people in the same room are really well done.
The "split screen" is of course the best way, but also using a double, always barely hidden by something and the fact that they keep talking and looking to the other one, out of the frame.
    All really well made.
    ...
Well... except when they fully show the back of the double, with the cheapest wig possible.

I believe the layman's term for it is split screen technique. Amazingly well done because for the other half they got to remember exactly where the other brother spoke to fill in the gaps. That must take some degree of rehearsing and practice to get just right. Or the director is standing where the other brother is standing saying the lines so he would know when to speak his other brother's lines.
