I needed this. I'm a teen writer and I don't always have confidence in my writing. Even when people compliment it I feel like they're more so complimenting me rather than my work. You both are such an inspiration to me. So thank you.
Same, I wanna start writing but breaking bad intimidates me lmao. Might sound dumb but really that show is so good it’s crazy. I wanna write great story’s like that.
@@ianwilly7118 After I first started writing, I used to be REALLY put-off whenever I read the first chapter of books. It's sorta stupid because I -- a TEENAGER who still has a world to figure out -- was comparing myself to ADULTS, hehe. I got really scared and stopped reading for a bit. Which is HORRIBLE! NEVER do that. (Shudder.) My point is, if you wanna start writing, ignore the great works that other people have made. For now, focus on writing, because with ever single thing you write, you get better and better. And then maybe one day, you'll get to be as good as the writers of Breaking Bad. =^-^=
This comes at such a perfect time. I’m about to send my work to an editor and my mind bounces to “she isn’t going to like this. It isn’t good enough.” This helps!!
Great podcast as always! "There is no failure - you either win or learn" is a FANTASTIC phrase. Not keen on the line you drew between being 'confident' versus being 'prideful', though -- there's nothing wrong with someone being proud of themselves! For most people it means the same thing as confidence! No need to attach negativity to the word 'pride' or 'prideful'. I know it *can* have that connotation, especially in Christian circles, but for most people it doesn't--and lots of kids are taught to be proud of their work! Plus, and this is me bringing my own baggage into it, but... ladies especially get told a lot not to be too proud or too confident or too outspoken. Whatever the word they chose to use -- confidence, pride, ego, being a boss -- I'm on team 'let people rock their passions' and don't think we need to be finickety about word choice.
That it takes as much energy to be down on your writing as it does to be positive about it is profound. That is my main takeaway of the whole video. I love this series. Thank you for sharing it with all ofnus.
I agree with everything you said here, have been making myself similar reflections for a while now. "cultivate an attitude of positivity towards yourself etc. " This is so true...about anything really. Something I am working on :) Great podcast and great, practical tips! Thanks. And yes, I think we learn to be unconfident, disappointed, anxious, etc. because of the way society is nowadays.
I like the point of viewing your own work as an admirer. I was always worried that I'd just never improve if I had that mindset, and wasn't sure how to take feedback from friends because they might be biased. But lately I've been having fun watching deep dives video essays into the writing of different popular stories (Star Wars, PLL, etc.), and they're big fans of the stories and characters while also acknowledging and criticizing the way that the showbiz side of things can hurt the writing or suck out potential. Someone who truly loves the work will want to watch it go places and will be very aware of that not happening. That means that we can also be obsessive fans over our own work without getting in the way of our own improvement.
This is actually boosting my confidence. I've been watching other videos on this channel and they keep boosting my confidence and erasing my demotivation to keep writing so THANK YOU!
Confidence shows when the writing is assured. As a reader, you get the sense that the writer is in _control_ of the words. Weak writing tends to be 'people-pleasing' and lacking in originality or depth. A good writer _knows_ they are good. Weak writing tends to be gimmicky and attention-seeking, and often lacks direction or purpose. Vacuous dialogue is a sign of timid writing. If your story is genuinely interesting then there is no need to lack confidence. Good writers choose, exactly, the right words to create the feel and tone. Confidence should be embedded in the prose.
I'm now confident in my writing entirely because of you and Abbie. You gave me what I needed to rewrite the entire book and make it feel *right*! I'm writing the climax right now. Never thought I would ever get this far!!
This podcast has changed my life and writing game. TBH i would love to be friends with both of you. Amazing show and great TH-cam channels. Will be donating to your Patreon once I have a more stable income!!
Your podcast always helps me sooo much. Thank you!! Greetings from the Czech Republic Stay safe and inspired P.S.: Abbie´s sweater on the black background looks interesting :D
I love how you seperate pride from confidence, because I've always been confused with that. Also, from the perspective of two published authors, what did it feel like to first hold your book? To see it on your shelf with your favorite books? That is what will be the most worth-it thing for me someday. Thank you, guys!👌
I've been going through your episodes on confidence in writing etc. Thanks so much! I was wondering about subplots. I watched both Abbie’s videos on them, but now I’m wondering how to include the subplots. Scenes following the side character? Or are there other ways? Also, how do you outline the side character's story? She’s significantly less important than her brother in the scheme of the story, and I’m not thinking of her having a super dramatic arc. Oh, and she has basically the same plot. Help appreciated! Thank you.
*MY CHALLENGE WITH CONFIDENCE:* Unlike most other creatives watching writing-content on TH-cam, I'm working on a screenplay instead of a novel. *I know that screenplays have even more rigid "writing rules" in comparison.* Since I am very passionate about writing a story that happens to break essential screenwriting rules, I'm worried that the state of my confidence will be very bad at the time I have to start pitching my script. *Last year, I paid for a script consultant.* The feedback I got, really made me lose confidence in getting my story out to the world -- it made me worry there's no room in the world for the story that I want to tell... Anyway, none of these concenrs will stop me from writing the story (now working on a new version of the story). *This story is literally my most important reason for being alive.* I just hope I have what it takes to market the script once I'm done. At the end of the day, I'm just a guy from a small European country, with no achievements, dreaming of breaking into Hollywood with a script that breaks "all the rules." 😅
Does pride cone from insecurity? I think you're dead right. If you know something is true you don't have to constantly puff yourself up in its defense, you can just be calm, knowing you're right and will win in the end.
