Just a few little points that I struggled with in the video. 1. When you are Extruding the window you need to (E)xtrude and then (S)cale to get the window to extrude out equally on all sides. Mine was just being dragged all over the place until I did this. Grant says it in the video but it was quick and I missed it. 2. When you add the solidify modifier to the window it's possible that you may have extra verticies if you had a few failed attempts at Extruding like me. This means the solidify modifier will make the shape look uneven and won't solidify nicely along the Y Axis like it does in the video. You can either Undo back to before the Extrude/Scale step mentioned above and do it again, or hit F3 and Type/Select Merge Vertices by Distance. This should get rid of any failed attempts at Extrusion.
If the Bevel modifier does nothing, go back to the extrude step. I realized that while I was trying to resize and extrude, I had created multiple Edges and it wasn't working because of that.
A TH-cam tip I learned from a different Blender tutorial: If you right click on the TH-cam video twice, you can select a "Picture in Picture" mode that pops the video out into a different window. You can then resize the popped-out video to make it bigger (though probably not anywhere near fullscreen). Spacebar still works to pause and unpause the video in this PiP mode, but most other shortcuts no longer function, so you can't accidentally click "1" or "2" or anything else that would screw up your tutorial-watching experience. Just paying it forward!
Trees done... Rocks done... Faces done... Hairstyles done ... Houses done too for free ... Now I will buy your character dev tutorial. I am already good at coding..... Thanks for making me an indie game dev 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Super cool tutorial! One small thing: You can move the rooftiles and bricks to collection BEFORE you duplicate them, so there is no need to mess around with selection.
Dear, Mr grant I really appreciate all your tutorials, and I don't miss any of it, " if it's possible to make a simple animation with a character " Thanks a Million
he does tutoirals on full character building + a simple animation using rigify / taking animations from mixamo, its on his gamedev tv course its like 30 odd quid atm, well worth it even though he shows all his stuff for free anyway :)
Not sure why I was having this issue on 2.90.1, but for the bevel modifier for the top window, it was not beveling at all until I unchecked "clamp overlap" in the bevel geometry settings. Looks pretty wonky if you go past 0.01m though.
This is an excellent project, and I certainly appreciate all the time you spend bringing these tutorials to all of us plebes. That being said, I am a programmer, and work in Unity. I was wondering if it is possible to offer a tutorial that would take something similar to this Cottage project and perhaps go one step further. guide us on how you would go about making the Cottage something a player/character could walk around in. Perhaps place NPCs' in for talking to and buying and selling from. Place furniture in, and such. I am an avid World of Warcraft player, and something along the lines of a Goldshire, or even some of the buildings in Stormwind would be a good example of these types of buildings. There are literally thousands of fledgling programmers who would be most appreciative if there was some guide to designing structures that could be used in an MMORPG and to then use Blender as the vehicle for doing just that. This is just an idea and I know you must be very busy. Once again, thank you for this tutorial and I wish you the greatest success in your future endeavours..
You would need to model the interiors to start which is a TON more work, then I’m not entirely sure but how I would do it is for the door add a bone on the hinge, that make open and close animations and they should be able to go in and out
I don't think Grant does Unity stuff. There are tutorials on how to get Blender projects into Unity, it's not too hard. Then once in, you need to create collider boxes for the model, so the walls, floor, roof are all interactable in the sense that they will prevent player movement. If you want the door to be interactable to open, then it needs to be a seperate game object (make sure you don't join the door to the house in Blender). Then you can add a door swivel modifier in Unity (I forget the exact name, but it's literally a modifier made for exactly this purpose). You then can interact with it like a normal door where it will swing when pushed. Or, you could add a script that when you push a button near the door, it will rotate 90 degrees. Push again, and it will rotate back 90 degrees. There are lots of tutorials about this kind of stuff out there, I suggest Brackeys.
Another great series! I probably need to get better at keeping my sizing consistent but I really appreciate when you use a new tool in your series, eg. the4knife tool or boolean, new for me anyway! On that the only issue I had was making my front window beside the door, when I cut out the shape and pressed enter, the results were crazy, I got around it by making a more angular shaped window but might be a problem others are having, thanks again, on to pt4!
is it ok, if 4 parts to do in a row, took me 2 days? even though i'm happy that at least completed 4th part. Grant big thanks to you! Love from Kazakhstan !!! UPD: I hope you will understand my English, sorry if i made mistakes :)
Took me a while to get scaling on edges work from the center. I found out it means I have to choose 'Median point' in the Transform Pivot Point dropdown menu.
How about some low poly terrain as next series? Some mountain creek or hill... I gotta put somewhere my guard tower I made based on your Well tutorial and wooden beams from cottage tut.
This is awesome... Thanks alot Grant. But I'm stuck somewhere o.. In the window above, after applying the solidify modifier, then the next is the bevel modifier; mine is not affecting the window o. It's like I'm doing nothing... Wah did i miss?😭

8:55 I can't move all of the bricks that way. I duplicated, R, Z 90, but all the bricks move individually 90 degrees vertically. Do I need to reset the origin?
here's my progress so far: i.imgur.com/Fc7s83s.png I decided to fill the roof with tiles. I made two tiles then flipped them around. i.imgur.com/DgHSy3W.png The thin wedge is to make the tiles repeat in a seamless way. Great tutorial so far thanks!
Love the tutorial. But now I have this weird thing going... after creating one side of the rooftiles, and duplicating them, when I move them a lot of the building follows with it. Even when I create a new tile and move it, part of the building follows, breaking it all apart. must I start over, or is there a solution ?
I'm having trouble at the 3 minute mark. After removing the modifiers from the to be window pane I press slash and can see the pane is still selected in object mode. As soon as I change to edit mode it deselects the pane and I'm unable to use F to fill. Any ideas? Thanks in advance
Hey, can you please make a tutorial for a sun with flares/flames that are animated textures or planes, or just point me in that direction if you have a tutorial for something similar. I'm making models for source engine, and sadly i can't use rendered stuff, only textures.
So when I extruded mine I'm using 2.92 or something like that the edges are extruding not in the way that it is shown in the video when extruding the window nearest to roof and and is instead extruding and making it like equal it unequal and making it extrude out like a tube instead of the way it was in your vid I don't know how to explain it
