How the retro gaming scene works: Step one: Spend 1000 hours researching, comparing, purchasing, tweaking and messing around with the hardware. Step 2: Spend 10 hours playing the games.

    • @raindrainxi
      @raindrainxi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +100

It really is. By the time you make everything work, you're sick and tired that you just try everything out if they work lol. But personally, the tweaking and messing around is 90% of the fun.

@@raindrainxi Isn't it though? I love playing around with the systems. Sometimes I wish I spent more time on the games, but that's only half the fun.

So, we have to choose between the RG350M with perfect aluminium case, perfect sticks, perfect screen but not enough powerful ; the RG351P with good plastic case, perfect sticks, enough powerful but shitty screen and the retroid pocket 2 with shitty plastic, shitty sticks but enough powerful and perfect screen. I liked seeing the comparisons, pros and cons of each system, as I was considering all 3 of them at one point. I went with the 351P because I liked the layout of the controls, and I do also like that it uses the Emulation Station interface. Ah I love your long videos, what a treat.
But yeah, you changed my mind about buying the RP2, and I still thank you for that. I don't think it's a bad device, but you made me realize some things that I would hate to do on my own. Android doesn't scare me because I use it daily and I love tinkering my devices, but there are two aspects that I really value, which is the screen and a good d-pad.
So, considering the devices on the market right now, I went with Anbernic's middle child.
RP2 was a very promising device, and still is great , but it's not for everyone, especially for those who want pick and play devices and for the picky old folks in the community.
And I think the RP team will learn a lot from this experience and will be more prepared for their next launch.
I believe the RG351p is what the RG350 was, the beginning of something revolutionary. They already have a friendly software and better hardware, and maybe now with the RG351M they also put a better screen on the M-model. Fingers crossed!
But one thing is for sure, their next line of devices is going to be crazy!
Btw, congrats on the 4k! ;)

Since the start of quarantine I've dusted off my old GBAsp and grown my game collection. When I ran into the frustration of wanting to play games that were either very expensive, or impossible to find I turned to the emulator community. For me playing emulators on a PC just isn't the same, I want to be able to hold a console in my hands, and take it on the go.
Getting into consoles and emulators with next to no background has been tough, a lot of people assume background knowledge that I just don't have. So I wanted to thank you for making a comprehensive guide and comparison video! I now feel a lot more confident in purchasing a new console, without worry that I'm working with out of date or biased info.

I like that the Retroid Pocket 2 (and 2+) feels like a "toy". It reminds me of the Game Boy, like you said. Which I love. I bought the "Retro" colored Pocket 2+ specifically for that nostalgia since it adopts the original DMG Game Boy's colors, and the fact that the plastic reminds me of an old Game Boy, is perfectly fine with me. I don't need my handheld to be metal, or textured. I wouldn't MIND if it was, but again, I quite like how the Retroid feels.

If I'm going to drop $ for a portable emulation system, I want the most options available so I don't have to carry multiple devices around with a lot of duplication between them. Therefore the play store & steam sold it for me. I also find it ironic that the one with the "best" case has the least variety of gaming options.

Nice review. The RG351P is possibly a nice result of strong competition from the RP2. RP2 was right for me because I was already using retroarch on my phone and using it didn't require to learn a whole lot about it's workings. 2020 was the first time these devices became nice enough for me to consider one, and while 2021 might be slow because of the pandemic, the next wave of devices might just be the sweet spot for sub-$150 portable emulation devices, and them taking away double duty from my phone as a gaming device would also make it ok for me to look for more budget oriented phone the next time I have to update.

I just ended up getting a rg280m cause I found one for $45 new.
It does everything the 350m does and I think the same 320x480 resolution on the smaller tempered glass screen looks even better.

Should of mentioned the Retroid pocket 2 comes in an awesome assortment of color designs. My shipping took about 2 weeks not 2 months so the supply has gotten better. I've had it a few weeks now and overall happy with it, I actually like the second OS you said you didn't, it comes preloaded with 2k+ games and the store to download more. I don't see a difference between downloading a game or having to install one, you mentioned you should use your own copy of a game but 99% of people using these aren't. Thanks for the comparison video.

To be fair, I think he legally HAS to say that you should provide your own games. Most people that make videos about emulation kinda avoids the topic of obtaining roms, or flat out says you should provide your own from your own physical games.
Pretty sure that a video can be demonitized if someone openly supports illegally downloading roms.
And this goes even more-so for people that are getting free review units to make videos on.

I had a GPD XD and loved it until the screen shorted, and I'm messing around setting up a Retroid Pocket 2 now. I like the form factor of the Retroid but I miss having enough overhead to be able to run all my preferred Retroarch cores with nice shaders rather than sacrificing quality and using 10+ year old speed hacked emulators just get it to run at all in many cases. Wish someone would just make one of these handhelds at a higher price point and quality or even better, a *good* telescopic controller option for my S10 so I can stop trying to get janky obsolete hardware to impress me a decade too late.

Hi. This video was exactly what I needed to watch. I currently have a retroflag GPI and although the form factor is cute the pi zero seems a bit slow.
I think the rg351p is the one for me but how much of an issue is the screen ratio?

    • @RetroGameCorps

I don't think it's that big of a deal. It used to bother me but now I'm used to it. I can play games in either 3:2 or a smaller 4:3 and they're both fine to me. If you want to see more on it, check out my RG351P Deep Dive Review.

Very nice video! I have a 350M and just got the RP2. I would like to play some Dreamcast games but, most of them play poorly on RP2. I hoped the 351P would play better, but watching your video helped clarify me. I will wait until these handhelds improve a little more. And I share the same opinion about the RP2 controls.

  • @dallasb871

I’m still torn on which one to buy. I have spent hours researching and still confused. I want to play NES, SNES, Sega, MAME, and N64 mainly. I would also like the ability to add my own ROMS with ease. The 4:3 ratio with the 480p screen has me curious as I don’t know how important that is to the gameplay?? Do I need a 4:3 ratio to avoid the screen being stretched?? I’m ready to pull the trigger on one of these devices. Thanks for any help

My mom likes some of the older arcade games that were around when she was in college, but she never really has free time unless she's going on a trip and stuck in transit for several hours. Most computer-based emulation stuff is too technical for her, but if I could set up the 351P and give her something portable that's easy to use that might just be the ticket. Thanks for the comparison video!

Hi, NetPlay is definitely possible on the RG351P through RetroArch, I tested it with MashTec a couple weeks ago and we were able to play Super Mario Kart and Streets of Rage together from across the world. You'll need to use the same device, RetroArch core, and game file.

Great Video! I have a 350m coming in about two days and I can't wait to play some GBA games and try out some other emulators. The perfect device for me would have been 351p metal, better res and that would have been the god device! I noticed I like small displays after using the Super Mario game and watch. I am all about my visuals so I had to choose the 350m over the 351p, was thinking about picking up both to compare but the 350m seems a bit superior over the 351p.

For me, the ps vita is king (that is if you can find a cheap one). It has flawless ps1 and PSP emulation, retroarch, a powerful homebrew community, a wealth of ports, is easy to jailbreak and has quite a few must-play exclusives.
Not to mention the fact that there's a hack that allows you to stream video and audio to a computer. add that with the ability to plug in ps4 and even Xbox controllers (with some tinkering) and you basically have a mini Nintendo switch
I got mine last summer and am extremely happy with it. definitely would consider it a frontrunner in any retro handhelds tier list.

Well this has answered so much. I've been narrowing down for weeks and was going to go with the 350p but then spotted the 351p and it just added more questions.
I only have one question which I don't remember seeing in your video. When it comes to eventually updating the 351P, is there an app available on Windows to install any updates. Or will it be a case of downloading new firmware and transferring it across?

    • @Valeria-fy1vh
      @Valeria-fy1vh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I put ArkOS on my 351P (super simple process but you need a computer) and it has the option of OTA updates. I believe the stock firmware has to be updated via dropping files onto the SD card. Anbernic has the files on their Discord.

Great comparison for those handhelds. I have an RP2 and I love it ! I do have to say one thing the delivery time has got better as Retroid are now shipping the devices a lot quicker. Their shipping dates are updated more frequently so the delivery time has shortened. Mine took 6 weeks and that was only due to the chip shortage that affected China. Retroid must be ok now as they are shipping more frequently.

That's good to hear. I have heard some horror stories even recently, but it's nice that they are getting better. They're in a tough spot between chip suppliers and customer expectations, so I don't fault them for struggling to keep up. It's a good problem to have!
