I love watching these phone repair videos. I actually went and replaced the battery on my original Google Pixel not too long ago due in part to videos like this. For my first repair like that it could have gone worse, I burned the bottom of the screen with a heat gun but it's only noticeable when the screen is off so it doesn't bother me. Everything else works fine and the battery now properly holds a charge so I call it a win.

bro im so jealous that you are able to find these amazing deals. I used to be able to quite easily by searching spelling mistakes on ebay and auction sites but these days it just isnt as effective at all
Despite me having a pixel 4A, not the one with 5G, this gives me hope that this phone can last me several years, and can be repaired fairly easily. I'm the kind of person that doesn't replace my phone unless it's broken or severely out of date.
Smartphone companies should really adopt the display and battery removal first approach when it comes to building new smartphones, since these are the parts that often need replacing when broken.
The underlying driver is watertightness. Yes, there are other ways to achieve it but this is expensive. If people would take better care of their devices, this would be an unnecessary feature, but a large chunk of the market do not.
@@TonyRule Xperia ZR has had removable battery and a water-resistant IP rating My dad had one, and it survived a drop in a frozen lake water, despite having loose ports and back cover after years of exploitation. Only the display got water marks, overall it worked just like before
@@TonyRule No the main driver is cost of manufacturing. It's much cheaper to adhere all the components to one subframe assembly than have the back adhered to one assembly and the screen be another separate assembly.
A Czech sold this, we don't have official support from Google which is the reason why he has to sell broken, most repair shops don't even bother to repair them.

A beautiful OLED screen, good battery life, headphone jack, very handy fingerprint scaner on the back, camera that takes awesome pictures at night and ability to even degoogle it makes this phone a strong value for that amount of money. Additional plus for easy future repairs like you mentioned in the video. The only downside I've noticed are mid quality speakers. Another great job as always.great deal and an easy repair in comparison to your others. Also thanks very much for the signed samsung note 4.much appreciated.
For sure. He stripped it down disconnected it/reconnected it and then fitted the screen. Surely a waste of time if there’s any charge left in the battery there still being the potential for shorting it? The way the phone is constructed would seem to indicate this is an unnecessary process because you can’t really fit the screen with the battery disconnected the back panel being screwed on from the front!
Having said that, I do have a Pixel 6 and absolutely love it. It takes the most beautiful photos. I managed to get an open box one in the US, saving me almost £250 from what it would cost in the UK. If I had a complaint, it is that you really need to have some kind of case on it because no matter what, you are going to drop that sucker and it is all glass. I have a cheap clear jelly. It does take away from the beauty of the design, but I do not feel like paying £600 to replace the phone.

BTW, this comment is from a Pixel 5a 5G, LOL, so it only makes a ton of sense to be watching a Pixel 4a 5G get repaired on a Pixel 5a 5G, haha. It's quite fun to be seeing a smartphone from the same company on a newer or older iteration, if you ask me.
thanks to your videos i already have a little phone repair hobby where i usually repair and resell mine with a minimal profit but good enough to cover costs and a bit extra cash
I had a friend that dropped the pixel 5a. You're right. They are easy to fix. He gave it to me for free and had the same issue. I replaced the screen and it was fixed. Great video!
Those Pixels seem so reliable. Fascinating alternative to the Galaxy range and iPhones. I'm amazed at how cheaply you can get these phones and parts. I've been searching for a replacement screen for my Xperia 5 ii, but they seem to be super expensive. Fortunately, the scratch is only over the "forehead" of the device, so I'm not too upset, and the phone is getting on a bit now, so it's had a good run. I hope there's an Xperia 1 iv this year. The last few have been such good phones.
I used this video as a guide to repair my own 4a 5G, and it was a total success! Two things not covered well in the video, though: one, how long to heat the screen (I preheated the hot plate to 80° for about 10 minutes, and then had the phone on it for about 5 minutes); and two, making sure to transfer and secure the tiny grille for the handset speaker.
I work at a repair shop and we use E8000 glue. If the customer returns early and phone is ready, we tell the customer “leave the rubber bands on for at least 4 hours so it dries properly.”
Love your videos. Easy to understand and learn from. I've used to repair Samsung's J lineup from 2017 (J3/5/7) and they open in a similar way, however the original screen is glued too hard and normaly comes apart. Keep it up.
6:45 a lot of customers don't want to wait for the adhesive to dry sadly. My solution is to use scotch tape around the edges of the display and pull it tight down around the bottom of the device. I then tell the customer to be easy on it for 24 hours and then they can remove the tape. Not everyone listens and occasionally I get phones back same day with a screen that fell off since they couldn't deal with the tape.
@@acumenium8157 kinda leaves everyone in a bad situation. That's why I settled on the tape solution. So far the only time issues have come up is from people being impatient and pulling the tape too early. One of them literally said "it looked bad" so they peeled it and yanked the screen off in the process. Wound up breaking a part that had taken 2 months to arrive because they couldn't wait another 24 hours.
@@Saxophone_King Why are you as a repair shop not keeping the phone during the repair process (of which curing absolutely is), though? Or are you talking about people who apply it themselves and mess it up?
@@acumenium8157 as you said before, people can't leave their phones for the whole curing time of 24 hours. I also give them a verbal and written warning about adhesives and curing times. Most listen. Some don't. Rubber Bands --- I'd recommend using a padded weight (perhaps a brick, or a chunk of heavy metal). The padding might be an old sock. Place the phone on a padded surface, and the weight on top. It would apply pressure more evenly, more controlled (you choose the mass of the weight), no pressure points, and much easier to use. Less chance of disaster. If alignment is a concern, then use tape to hold the screen in position. All this is speculation, not based on experience. But the rubber bands make me wince. ;-) Edit to add: Choose the weight's mass so that it doesn't break the screen. Ensure it is appropriately padded. There's no reason why applying the necessary and appropriate pressure smoothly from a well designed weight wouldn't be LESS likely to break screen than the uneven and inconsistent force from rubber bands. One could even calculate the exact pressure being applied (e.g. in PSI) being the mass over the area. It doesn't require much effort to arrive at a better solution than the rubber bands
I do this for living too,try to clean up the adhesive with a microfibre cloth,it’s much easier and when you clean up the edges of the frame use cotton swabs with isopropyl alcohol, thank me later

I lived in Australia for 3 years and bought a pixel 4a 5g in late 2020 for 699 AUD which was a steal really compared to the prices elsewhere... I am back in the UK now and still have it as my daily, it's been great, I just wish for a bigger battery sometimes as I have had some degradation and I am a power user, was considering upgrading to the 6a when it drops in a few months... Hi Hugh, I'm from Czech Republic and I'm interested that the first message on the new display was in czech language. Was the phone from Czech Republik? Btw you've got great videos.
I switched from iphone when my iphone 6s randomly died on me. I decided to go back to android and picked the Pixel 3. I used that phone for three years until the battery wore out. I've since upgraded to the Pixel 5 and hope to use it as long as I can. I still have the Pixel 3 I might just pop a new battery in it sometime.
5:35 Wow, it's speaking Czech. Did you get it off of a czech tourist or something? The Czech republic is quite on the other side of the gloge 😲😀I just got me a 4a 5G that was drowned and screen is dead. I hope I'll be able to fix it.
Hi. Please if you can Answer my question that I did in my comment of another video. And awesome video like always. Is a shame I don't live close enough to you, if the taxes wasn't so expensive I ship my phones for you repair, I really like the care you have and the perfection you use to repair phones👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
1:48 "Seriously it's less strong than the pixel 4 and other newer phones like the iphones" Isn't this obvious? The pixel 4a 5g is only rated ip57, while flagship phones like the iphones have ip67/68. Having higher rating means you need to seal your phone more properly and you need to use stronger adhesive
@@1236688645 yes, you might know it, some people might know it but it doesn't mean everyone knows it. And the fact that he mentioned the pixel was easier to open than the iphone without giving the info about the water rating may give people some false sense that the iphone is unreasonably sealed for nothing and the pixel is friendlier in terms of repairablilty

Hi im from south africa and i have a pixel 4a 5g i need to replace the battery as i get about 4 hours of screen on time As Google doesnt support pixels in south africa, Is there any way i can get a battery to replace it
So you removed the back to disconnect the battery before attaching the screen but then reattached the battery before connecting the screen? Did I miss something?
That display you have installed was most likely a OEM screen as it had the sticker on the front film. I work at a authorized repair shop so this is how I know.
google pixel phones are easy to repair. about 1 year ago i recommend these to my family because the phones where easy to repair and they have a good camera. all round google pixels are good and easy to repair phones
I tried to take my 4a to a repair shop for a new battery. They told me they couldn't replace the battery without breaking the screen, so the total cost of the repair would be $400 usd. Very upsetting
Before i got my Pixel 6 i owned the 4a 5G - A great Phone! It slipped out of my hand and landed on the 0,5mm that where not covered by my screenprotector and the glass shattered. Compared to the price of the 4a 5G the repair was way to expensive so i used it with the shattered glass until i got my new phone.
Two things I love about my pixel 4a are it's headphone jack and smaller size. Sadly the 6a is doing away with these, so when I do upgrade, it likely won't be to another pixel
I have had my pixel 4a5g replaced 3 times since release. First was a 4ft drop second was really bad screen burn after just 3 months and third was another shattered internal display after applying a bit too much pressure while in my pocket.
Didn’t you disassemble the phone to unplug the battery in order to attach the new display ? Because you just unplugged it plugged it back in and closed the phone and after this you attached the display with battery plugged in. Extra steps literally for nothing
Great video but I have two questions, first is it still something to be worried about with the battery being reconnected before the LCD is connected? Can it still be shorted if the phone is off but the battery is plugged in? Secondly are you ever worried about the glue seeping into the display panel and leaving water damage like defects in the panel itself?
Well, I am assuming that it's like taking out the battery and putting it back on a battery-powered lamp. You still need to press the power button to engage the battery and turn the lamp on.
Thank you. My display popped off and I'm pretty sure it's because repair shop didn't glue it on properly. I dropped it tonight in the whole front screen popped off didn't break and I reattached the little cable. Also there was no tape over it
"but no charger... likely because they kept it, as the other phone didn't come with one" i quite literally grinned because i knew what this pun was about
Just looking at the way this phone is designed, you might be able to replace the display without even disconnecting the battery here. But I'm not completely sure that would be safe or even possible in this case.
Why owner dont send him to repair in some pixel service center or other services!? My friend have problems with screen too on pixel 5. All repair cost him 130 $ almost year ago (new display and work)...
Two things: 1. Use clamps for the display, there are tiny ones. These apply pressure more evenly on the outer perimeter of the display, than rubber bands. 2. You've paid way too much for the new display.
Just did a job like this at our shop, took about 15min only because I needed to disconnect the battery after accidently turning the phone back on with the screen off. If only Apple and Samsung made it this easy, the world would be a better place.
Be aware that removing a shattered screen will be tedious and you must be patient and careful to remove all of the bits from the glue channel between the screen and the phone body. Removing the old glue is a VERY tedious and time consuming process so be prepared to take considerably longer than the 30-60 minutes shown in the directions. Also be aware that having a magnifiying headset with lights should be a high priority purchase along with this kit. Re-attaching the screen-to-phone connector is also incredibly tedious and frustrating. It took more than 8 hours of work to get ours replaced. At first it all worked fine and 10 minutes later the screen failed. Be prepared to either be delighted that your efforts bring a phone back to life or that it will end in utter failure and frustration... it is NOT as easy as you think. The TH-cam videos are all missing this information and make it all look easy...... not so.
4:38 How is taking the old glue off the most important step? I would think that replacing the screen with a new one would be more important than the glue. If you put the old screen on then it will still not work.
@HughJeffreys, another great job. Samsung J5/J7 2017 models use same assembly. I was ask in previous comments - what's the double sided adhesive that you use?
Hugh uses E8000 which is a liquid adhesive. If you're repairing devices that customers will end up actually using, it is unsuitable as it takes too long to reach max bond strength. TESA 61395 is a much better option (especially if you're replacing a screen that was previously held in place using tape, such as the Pixel 4a 5G). TESA 61395 is pressure activated and doesn't need cure time, plus it gives hard OLED screens "room to breathe" so it won't break as easily.
@@antoinev7183 - Yes, I know about the glue, I'm using the same + B7000 (which needs more time to dry, but you have more open time after applying and remains more flexible after that). Hugh use some double side transperant advesive, but I don't know what brand is it. Thanks for info about Tesa 61395, appreciated it.

Hi Hugh, I'm from Czech Republic and I'm interested that the first message on the new display was in czech language. Was the phone from Czech Republik? Btw you've got great videos.
@@MouseQueen7220 ahoj, vím, že tam nemá být K, ale C, ale už jsem to nechtěl upravovat 😀
I’ve had this phone for over a year, excellent performance and camera and google updates…I highly recommend it
Really easy repair phone, good video!
I switched from iphone when my iphone 6s randomly died on me. I decided to go back to android and picked the Pixel 3. I used that phone for three years until the battery wore out. I've since upgraded to the Pixel 5 and hope to use it as long as I can. I still have the Pixel 3 I might just pop a new battery in it sometime.
great video Enormous Jeffreys
Hugh Mungus wot?
I've worked on hundreds of those and I've never detached the battery. Works every time.
You are so smart and i love your videos
5:35 Wow, it's speaking Czech. Did you get it off of a czech tourist or something? The Czech republic is quite on the other side of the gloge 😲😀I just got me a 4a 5G that was drowned and screen is dead. I hope I'll be able to fix it.
My speakers stopped working, is there a way to buy and repair those?
You could just hold the power button until it buzzes it'll also turn off the phone didn't need to undo the midplate
A classic, smoother-sailing repair
1:48 "Seriously it's less strong than the pixel 4 and other newer phones like the iphones"
Isn't this obvious? The pixel 4a 5g is only rated ip57, while flagship phones like the iphones have ip67/68. Having higher rating means you need to seal your phone more properly and you need to use stronger adhesive
YES, I mean TOTALLY OBVIOUS!!!
Literally every single person watching this video has and understands this information.
@@1236688645 yes, you might know it, some people might know it but it doesn't mean everyone knows it. And the fact that he mentioned the pixel was easier to open than the iphone without giving the info about the water rating may give people some false sense that the iphone is unreasonably sealed for nothing and the pixel is friendlier in terms of repairablilty
this is so satisfying to watch
Hi Hugh, I’ve been watching your videos for a while now and I would like to start repairing some smartphones and then selling them as well.
Would you mind making a guide or some beginner tips on how to start? I find choosing the broken smartphone to buy the trickiest part so some advice would be needed there.
Thanks in advice and keep up with the good work!
How do you deal with FRP locked phones?
Hi im from south africa and i have a pixel 4a 5g
i need to replace the battery as i get about 4 hours of screen on time
As Google doesnt support pixels in south africa,
Is there any way i can get a battery to replace it
These phones are so brilliant and it's even better now that I know how easy they are to repair
So you removed the back to disconnect the battery before attaching the screen but then reattached the battery before connecting the screen? Did I miss something?
This. ?
With the phone apparently coming from the Czech republic you're lucky it even survived the journey.
good explain brother
Nice video 👍👍
That display you have installed was most likely a OEM screen as it had the sticker on the front film. I work at a authorized repair shop so this is how I know.
Which manufacturer makes the adhesive tape that authorized repair partners use?
google pixel phones are easy to repair. about 1 year ago i recommend these to my family because the phones where easy to repair and they have a good camera.
all round google pixels are good and easy to repair phones
Hmm. I have dropped mine a few times but it never cracked
How much does it cost you to repair the lcd
Is it costly
Didn’t you disassemble the phone to unplug the battery in order to attach the new display ? Because you just unplugged it plugged it back in and closed the phone and after this you attached the display with battery plugged in. Extra steps literally for nothing
YOURE AWESOME
Great video but I have two questions, first is it still something to be worried about with the battery being reconnected before the LCD is connected? Can it still be shorted if the phone is off but the battery is plugged in?
Secondly are you ever worried about the glue seeping into the display panel and leaving water damage like defects in the panel itself?
Well, I am assuming that it's like taking out the battery and putting it back on a battery-powered lamp. You still need to press the power button to engage the battery and turn the lamp on.
Nope, he is just to woried about it shorting out
Thank you. My display popped off and I'm pretty sure it's because repair shop didn't glue it on properly. I dropped it tonight in the whole front screen popped off didn't break and I reattached the little cable. Also there was no tape over it
you know whats funny, every time I open up a video on repair, Coolblue throws an ad in my face literally saying “smartphone broken? buy a new one!”
"but no charger... likely because they kept it, as the other phone didn't come with one"
i quite literally grinned because i knew what this pun was about
Just looking at the way this phone is designed, you might be able to replace the display without even disconnecting the battery here. But I'm not completely sure that would be safe or even possible in this case.
Why owner dont send him to repair in some pixel service center or other services!? My friend have problems with screen too on pixel 5. All repair cost him 130 $ almost year ago (new display and work)...
Two things:
1. Use clamps for the display, there are tiny ones. These apply pressure more evenly on the outer perimeter of the display, than rubber bands.
2. You've paid way too much for the new display.
Can you please post some videos on you how actually resell your fixed electronics?
The TH-cam videos are all missing this information and make it all look easy...... not so.
8 hours?
it took me a little bit over 2 for my (first) repair

How is taking the old glue off the most important step? I would think that replacing the screen with a new one would be more important than the glue. If you put the old screen on then it will still not work.
I also thought about repairing a Pixel 4a. But to be honest I is just not worth it. The screen is so Expensive.
This is working without any problems guys
Where did you buy or get the new screen for the pixel 4a
Great job
From where did you bought this damaged tech bro?
5:37 was the phone bought in czechia or something
it's cool to see set the phone language is Czech.... 🙂
