I use the MacBook mostly as a portable editing computer when I'm traveling. The 11" is the perfect form factor for me, I can carry it around a conference like CES all day without even noticing it.
I used a combination of the 50mm 1.8G and a 40mm 2.8G macro lens. The 50mm 1.8 has a great Canon equivalent. For macro the 50mm 2.5 is about as close as it gets.
If it's your main computer I recommend the 13". If you're like me an wanting something more portable or have an external monitor you'll be using the 11" is excellent.
Thanks for the feedback. It's taken me years to get my 'video voice' down but I am still always trying to get better, it's just really hard to break the habit. I don't even notice myself doing it. :P
Thanks! I love making videos, it drives me crazy if I make a video and don't think it's good enough. Got plenty of videos I've made and even uploaded but changed my mind on and taken back down.
I'd probably go with the Air. The 13" Pro is pretty outdated at this point and it's only slightly more powerful as far as the CPU goes. The SSD in the Air is enough to make the difference too.
Haven't really tested it properly but I do think 8GB is a good idea. I was constantly running out of RAM on my 4GB Air (admittedly I run things like VMs and video editors all the time which made it way worse). Not to mention you can't upgrade RAM so getting 8GB of RAM makes a ton of sense to me.
I`m going to get an new apple computer for Christmas but I half to help pay and I have the money but what kind of apple laptop should I get? Please help!
Duncan, I like your serial killer knife at 00:10 haha. Nice video as usual. If I have money after my 1st semester of college, I will definitely look at an air. Thanks!
thank you for an good video, Im considering buying a macbook for the first time after many windows computers and problems. The last pc i had was a little ASUS EEE whit ssd , and it worked ''OK'' for me, A bit slow and it didnt handle videostreaming and such so good, But my question is, do you think a macbook air 11,6'' whit 8gb ram, 128gb ssd and i7 would work for me,? i use it to normal websurfing and music, youtubevideos, and some netflix streaming, like the 11,6 better than the 13 AIR
Really a random question but I realize you are actually responding to people. Question: What case should I get my new iPad? I'm really enjoying it but I don't want it to break when I throw it in my bag. Otterbox is what I have been looking at but it doesn't allow me to put on a custom anti-glare screen protector. If anyone knows any good cases, feel free to respond.
Once again I watch your video's and not only are they interesting they are actually informative... I have a question if you get a chance. In the next day or so I am buying a macbook. I'll probably go with the Pro, but I'm not sure yet. I will be doing a lot of video editing. Do you think it is worth it to get the 2012 which comes with an SSD. Would I notice a huge difference between that and a 7200 RPM drive?? Thanks :)
When I use my laptop, i usually use it for writing notes, organizing my stuffs for work, reading emails and that is where Macs does it best compared to Windows. Macs are more stable and faster compared to Windows, albeit more restrictive. Quickness is the most important when it comes to work, I don't need all those crazy specs which would only reduce my battery life and doesn't speed up anything else i do except gaming. I do have a crazy, super powered desktop at my house for gaming though.
There is something you tend to do at the end of each single sentence. I don't know how to describe it, but I noticed it immediately :D Is that by purpose or only in your reviews? Just wondering ^^
I'm thinking about buying a new 2012 15.4" MacBook Pro (non-retina) from amazon and my only concern is "paying tax", am I going to pay taxes if I buy that MacBook?
I use Corel VideoStudio Pro X5. The editor has a lot to do with it but most of the look is dialed in while filming with camera settings, picking the correct lenses and adjusting my lighting.
hey, I am presently saving for a MacBook air 11 inch with 8gb and 128 ssd, do u think I should get that MacBook now or I should wait till june for the new release, and if I do get it now, do u think it will be easy for me to resell and upgrade? and what do u think about the screen size of the 11 inch? is it so much of an issue? thanks:)
I've certainly noticed you're trying to get rid of it! I'm really glad you took my comment as feedback, because it might not have seemed like it a bit and more about whining (it wasn't, I was trying to give feedback!)
Not all videos. Any time I'm in front of the camera that's not scripted or when I'm doing a screencast or jailbreak video. Otherwise if it's an edited video like this then yep, it's scripted and fine tuned.
I review Android phones sometimes, in fact I'm going to be taking a look at the Galaxy S III this week. What I review mostly comes from what people ask for the most really, if people want more Android stuff I'm more than happy to do it.
Hey. I am saving for a MacBook Air. I am going to be using a monitor with it most of the time so I am getting the 11 inch Air. Should I get the 64 GB SSD or the 128 GB SSD? I will also have an external Hard Drive with 2 terabytes connected to it so it will have space. But when I use it for school or other things? I won't have that extra space. What should I do???
Hey Austin, I normally play games like WoW, Blackshot, MapleStory(Windows Games that I can just use bootcamp to install) on a computer, and watch youtube videos and surf the web. I rarely and almost never edit videos and images. Do you think a 2.0 GHz with 8GB of RAM and 128 GB Flash Storage is a good combination?
I don't like the new magsafe power thing. I like it how the cord went back so when you use it at a desk, the cord goes back instead of you having it go down the side of the desk. Poopey desigen.
I use the MacBook mostly as a portable editing computer when I'm traveling. The 11" is the perfect form factor for me, I can carry it around a conference like CES all day without even noticing it.
Absolutely! An SSD is around 4-5 times faster than a normal hard drive and you'll see that loading pretty much anything.
Absolutely! It's backwards compatible with USB 1 and USB 2.
I'm rocking the Smart Cover on my iPad right now. I've heard good things about using the Smart Cover along with the Switcheasy Cover Buddy,
Glad to hear it! Pretty happy with this style, I think it gets the point across without being boring or too long.

Glad to hear it, there's not a lot of interesting stuff in an unboxing lol but I try to make it as entertaining as I can.
Thanks for the feedback. It's taken me years to get my 'video voice' down but I am still always trying to get better, it's just really hard to break the habit. I don't even notice myself doing it. :P
And this is a prime example why I like your videos. Simple, to the point, and very well edited!
Glad you enjoyed!
That comes from using a DSLR and prime lenses. It's all about the equipment you use.
Thanks! I love making videos, it drives me crazy if I make a video and don't think it's good enough. Got plenty of videos I've made and even uploaded but changed my mind on and taken back down.
Generally no although some states like California do make you pay tax on Amazon.
I'd probably go with the Air. The 13" Pro is pretty outdated at this point and it's only slightly more powerful as far as the CPU goes. The SSD in the Air is enough to make the difference too.
Not much. About the only thing would be the SSD but there's not much reason to, the SSD it comes with is just as fast as anything you can buy.
Yep. All USB 3.0 ports are compatible with USB 1 and USB 2.
It's not new (had it for a bit) but yes, a 40mm macro lens.
If that's something you need, sure. Personally about the only time I ever use a CD/DVD is when I'm being a geek and burning an OS or something.
Hopefully in the next few months.
Lots of light and a good camera and lenses. :)
Dang 8 years
You mean the OS? The new MacBooks ship with Lion but get a free download of Mountain Lion next month.
As a main computer I'd go with the 13" Air with 8GB of RAM.
Not super thrilled with it either but I don't think it's a big deal.
Yep. I'll be traveling for the next few weeks but next month when I get back I'll do the review.
I appreciate it, means a lot! :)
Hi
Dude.. you make such nice and friendly video/reviews.. ANYONE can understand them.
Good work.
I love how you actually respond to people unlike most people on TH-cam.
I use Corel VideoStudio Pro X5. The text isn't difficult though, you can do that in pretty much any editor.
the way you said ram at the end was awesome
Thank you!
Are you going to review the new 2013 MacBook Air? Thanks
Sure thing!
Oh iOS? I'm definitely with you there, we need a decent refresh.
I wish other unboxings were like this
Thanks!
You'd be surprised at how many USB devices are USB 1 still.
You have a lot better unboxing videos than any other youtuber!
you have some of the most professional videos on youtube, man.
I'll be doing a panel at Vidcon on how make awesome videos quickly. I'll see about getting someone to record it.
maybe i want to hear his thoughts on it
DUDE, YOU WOULD BE A GREAT NARRATOR FOR A MOVIE!
Good video sir. Straight to the point and nice and clean editting!
Thanks! :D

i'm going to buy a macbook pro or a macbook air , but wich one is better ?
It's much, much faster. Beyond that it's basically the same.
Thanks! In your experience does the Switcheasy Cover buddy offer good protection. Enough to last in my backpack with my Calc book?
Thanks! Haha it only took maybe an hour and a half, no big deal.
hello) i like y r videos) many time watching )) in macbook air 2012 included "garageband" or need buy too?))
Are there any outstanding features with 3.0? Thanks for your help! :)
If you think that knife is big you should see some others I use haha. Thanks!

Do you do this for all your videos ?? Sorry about ALL the questions.
Normally it comes with 4GB of RAM but I custom ordered this one with 8GB from Apple.

First episode should be up on Wednesday!
Yep. Unboxings are boring IMO, that's why I try and cut them down so that they're interesting and you still see everything you need to.
Austin! When will you start "33303 or Less"? I'm really looking forward to it.
Nicely done.... Only if i had the money ;) any idea when the iMac is coming out? Thanks!

Yes, I think for you it is, because if you do not have much RAM and start playing those games, your Mac will freeze. 8GB will do the job.
Awesome!
I use Corel VideoStudio Pro X5. The editor has a lot to do with it but most of the look is dialed in while filming with camera settings, picking the correct lenses and adjusting my lighting.
I use my new iPad for class, I feel like it has better note taking apps for in-class setting and easily syncs with my iMac
Can you do a review on this one ?
How do you get all this stuff? Is it from sponsors?
Definitely not, I've got a editing PC I build last year.
But how do you get your voice when moving from the video to a picture or a different video. And BTW this was the best unboxing of the 2012 MBA
Or is the "stock" one good enough?

Very nice video. Is this your main computer ?
I write a script, record and edit the audio and then drop the edited audio into VideoStudio.
I loved the apple stickers joke!
Tri-Pad :) Tri-Pod + Track-Pad?
great viedeo! you're one of the best tech video maker ever! thanks
You got a new lens?
hey duncan can you give us some tips on how to be seen differently from all the other tech channels out there?
I don't like the new magsafe power thing. I like it how the cord went back so when you use it at a desk, the cord goes back instead of you having it go down the side of the desk. Poopey desigen.
The past is so weird...
Wow what camera do you use?
USB 3 and 2 can be used on the port
Hey Duncan what is your main computer please tell me I'm waiting you
Did you get applecare?
Do you know if we will be able to change the 2.0 ports with 3.0 ports on the last macbook pro?
Love your videos man, there great!!

Epic unboxing man :)
Good review as always!
