I still use my 13” MBP 2012 i5 with 16GB and 500GB SSD. Hi! Sorry this is gonna be quite a long comment but please bear with me. I'm planning to buy a 2012 soon near me. Btw I also have a base model M1 MacBook pro 13 (2021) but I only use it for live performance by running my keys and backing tracks but I don't use it for intensive arranging prods like what I do with my desktop because just loading spitfire chamber strings alone can't be usable on my 8gb m1. Heck the ram swapping is crazy! Before I can load other instruments aside from spitfire, I'm already out of ram. So I used other lower ram users like 8Dio products just to load other instruments other than just orchestral stuff but still... it's not justifiable to compensate. Moving on, like I said I'm fine with a 16gb ram/2tb ssd 2012 MacBook. I think I can work around it, and hope that the breathing space is better than that of an 8gb/250ssd. Just wanna know from a fellow like you who still has a 2012 that if I got one, can I still do some arrangements if or when I bring my work outside and go portable? But yeah, that's kontakt 5 that time. I just wonder how it performs on a Monterey OS (or even a Sonoma/Sequoia later on). 🙏 Most videos I found on YT just seem to revolve around video editing, photo and coding stuff. Few guys tackles this area and if ever they talk about music prod, it's mostly about purely recording audio which I think pretty much any laptop universally CAN handle (as long as no plugins were involved YET). The 2012 MacBook pro is an actual machine which is the best. But I have a competitor for that which I am still using for this past 13 years continsuly and still using this beast which is a Toshiba Satellite L755-168 which has 8gb of ram (maximum ram that can hold😅) and one 256 gb of ssd which is surprisingly fast. It's display has one line on its side which is not so noticable. I still using that for 4k video editing, Schoolworks, day to day tasks and still it is holding like a champ.
I picked up one of these bad boys for 30 € last week. I only upgraded the ram to 16 gigs which makes the total about 50€. Used OpenCore patcher to put Sanoma on in and it honestly works like a charm. Love this machine
I’ve had mine since I bought it new in 2012 lol I maxed out the ram and put in an SSD and I have to say it still does everything I need, including running the programs needed for 3d printing here at home, it’s solid and I love it lol
Awesome thanks for sharing! Still have my original 2012 MacBook Pro and was sad when I could no longer use adobe or other newer cloud based apps on it. I have not been wanting to give this laptop up!
open core legacy patcher might help, and you CAN technically hook up a External grapics card through the Thunderbolt port if you want to go that rout. works on all intel macs but not on apple M chips.
This is interesting how today this MacBooks is considered so old and obsolete and not bearable to edit videos. This laptop came in the era when TH-cam was just being known and TH-camrs would use this to edit their videos to post. 2012 is not that long ago, and crazy how i5 and i7 processors were so big back then. Makes you think in 5. Yrs how the latest MacBooks will seem like old technology and obsolete
I'm using a 2012 MBP as my daily computer right now. I use open core legacy patcher to get the current OS, I upgraded the ram to 16, replaced the Disk drive with a second SSD, Replaced the HD cable to one that better supports SSD's and replaced the main HD with a SSD. I run the hard drives in raid. The Swap is much faster than the DDR3 ram modules so you will see it being used alot but with the SSD's in raid I'm not seeing any hangups. the ONLY issue with this computer that I do have is like you mentioned Graphic power so editing photos or video is a no go..but I run a 27 inch external display at 1440p when I'm at my desk and that's good for documents or watching youtube or netflix, if I want to play games I plug in a ethernet cable and run Nividia Now on the native screen it's not to bad to be honest had a 5 hour Diablo 4 session earlier. I want to upgrade to a Mac air, or a Mac mini but I really can't justify it when this is still doing everything I need it too and probably will for mnay more years to come. replacement batteries are less than $30...
You covered all the details that make this machine great. it's a workhorse. I've been using the a1278 model steadily for years. Lately ive been having to do some more troubleshooting to get it go, but im still very satisfied uskng it for cad modeling with freecad for 3d printing, email, entertainment, ect. I think the upgrade to a mac mini is a grat suggestion, thats essential the next step, but it's also a shame that apple had its apparent peak in laptop hardware 12 years ago, with dongles et all since then
this is actually, the best macbook pro apple's ever made. well, you can edit 1080p easy in final cut in this device, ive been doing it and never had any issues. both sata slots can be occupied with 2tb each ( sata 2.5" ssd or hdd ) and can be configurated as raid ) ram max only 16gb sadly, but if the device still in great state, its still very usable for writing, media, browsing, even edit light task such as photos, videos ( with FCP ) and other basic needs.
Abraços aqui do Brasil! 🤘
most 2012 macbook pros that we see go for about 150$ on ebay, 16gb ram upgrade is about 15$ and a ssd is probably 30ish $ (the hdd on ours still works well), if you want a mac but dont want to spend thousands, get this computer.
I have a perfectly preserved 2012 Macbook Pro (it doesn't have a single scratch), it used to work perfectly and has never given me any problems. I have been avoiding updating it to avoid planned obsolescence but it has reached a point where I can no longer use any app (not even google Chrome), I basically used it to watch TH-cam, WhatsApp, Word and have some video calls. Is there any way to extend the life of this Mac to continue using it? As I said, it used to work for basic things but it's more than enough for me, I have a huge desktop computer for more demanding tasks so I don't need it for anything else, I wouldn't want to lose it. Any advice is appreciated, Thanks!!
I still use mine for work, taking interpreter calls for legal and medical reasons, a ram requiring gig if you will, long story short, yes i updated it with a terabyte of ssd and 16gb ram, 9 years into owning it in 2021, thing is i see new honor laptops w touch screens and whatnot but for what i need from my device... summed up I haven't spent money for a laptop since fall of 2011, we're in the final months of 2024 as I type this from my macbook pro 2012
I had that laptop for my school. Within 2 years it had to be fixed and 2 years after that again. I must say I didn't take care of that laptop all too well. I played the sims on it with downloads and I had the laptop always turned on. I sold it for parts after having it for 4 years. After that I went back to windows. Now I have a windows and a apple laptop MacBook Pro m3
The MacBook Pro 2012 you have could be the 13 inches version, that model doesn’t have speakers on the side and is apparently smaller (the keyboard almost goes from side to side)
great video! talk about editing, do you think that my ryzen 5 2400g gtx 1060 8gb of ram PC will be able to handle editing? im talking stock footage and audio files mostly from what i can imagine that i want my first video/s to look like, really have no idea how demanding it is and knowing that you used a lot of differenct pcs i thought you might know if im gonna be fine with mine. cant wait for the se video too, i have considered selling my current iPhone and just buying a se, i really like small phones and you dont really have small androids, but again, with my screentime i dont think it would be a good idea.
I think that should be a good starter pc for sure! I would only edit 1080p to start, then as you do it more and more just slowly start to upgrade the components. Small phones are the future, I love this SE, functional, and not nearly the same addictiveness as the iPhone max models
I have a 2012 Retina MacBook Pro and it’s great. Definitely not up to the task for editing video or photoshop but for regular computer tasks it works great. i got the 15'' one for 160$, I am really surprised that it has 2k Display in a 2012 laptop, keyboard is insanely good, but it heats that it can hurt your fingers when typing lol
I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2012 running the latest version of Catalina & when I had connected the DisplayPort Male to HDMI Male Cable, 1080p, Gold-Plated cable to my HP 22 er monitor it starting saying (Input Signal not found) so I had return the cable back to Amazon so today I’m gonna order the $8.99 BENFEI Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter, Mini DP Display Port to VGA (Thunderbolt Compatible) Male to Female Adapter so hopefully that will work when I receive it on Wednesday but now my monitor & my MacBook Pro has a stretch screen look on it (SMH!!!). can you please… tell me how I can get back both screens back to normal?
I would recommend it in fact I'm using a mid 2012 Macbook pro daily yes with Sonoma through open core legacy patcher its great for web browsing, light games such as Minecraft java and Rob-lox both running very well at high settings without mods things like garage band and video editing apps start to struggle a bit but TH-cam will normally play videos on highest res automatically widgets menu lags a bit but after its closed you have no lag anymore I have tried sequoia on it I don't recommend putting it on a 20212 mac book does not work the best, at least not yet, overall its still a great everyday laptop great for a student as a school/home use laptop. I did however not pay anything for mine as I found it in the trash.
This my first Mac still running strong I just upgraded the ram about 2 years ago to 16Gb and im about to upgrade to 1TB SSD I edit videos on final cut pro and make beats using MPC software no issues at all (just one thing my hard drive cable went bad couple months ago and this issue happened to me before but I thought that my hard drive crashed and I replaced it lost a lot stuff on that drive so when it happened again I looked up the issue and found out it could be just the hard drive cable and it was its really cheap and easy to install i honestly don't know if I will upgrade to a newer MacBook lol I feel like I got emotional attachment I may just upgrade it to have it at its max potential
Hi just wondering what the maximum amount of SSD cards that can go in this type of MacBook is as ibuff makes a kit for 2 SSDS SATA and one nvme, but there's a company which has the SATA connector and you can put two NVME SSDs in there and another 2 with the other ssd totalling up to 5. Would the laptop fry itself or would it potentially work? And if so has someone done it?
you can chunk in 2TB ssd in each slot ( other slot with hdd caddy of course replacing the dvd ) and set it up in raid configuration. im using 2tb in main bay and another 2tb hdd as a data cold drive in the dvd and its working like a charm. ( im using sata 2.5" ssd fyi )

That’s an insane deal!
I still use this macbook in 2024 for school in my univ❤❤
Yes with upgrades it like super smooth currently watching from this lapotp.
I want to upgrade to a Mac air, or a Mac mini but I really can't justify it when this is still doing everything I need it too and probably will for mnay more years to come. replacement batteries are less than $30...
hey quick question do you have to upgrade the ssd to install sonoma
@@4ad.anaya1735No but if you still use a HDD It’s best to upgrade to an SSD since HDDs perform very slow.
You covered all the details that make this machine great. it's a workhorse. I've been using the a1278 model steadily for years. Lately ive been having to do some more troubleshooting to get it go, but im still very satisfied uskng it for cad modeling with freecad for 3d printing, email, entertainment, ect. I think the upgrade to a mac mini is a grat suggestion, thats essential the next step, but it's also a shame that apple had its apparent peak in laptop hardware 12 years ago, with dongles et all since then
I run my A1287 MBP with Linux Mint OS, 16g ram and sata ssd. It flies.
this is actually, the best macbook pro apple's ever made.
well, you can edit 1080p easy in final cut in this device, ive been doing it and never had any issues.
both sata slots can be occupied with 2tb each ( sata 2.5" ssd or hdd ) and can be configurated as raid )
ram max only 16gb sadly, but if the device still in great state, its still very usable for writing, media, browsing, even edit light task such as photos, videos ( with FCP ) and other basic needs.
With the matte display is even better…happy with my 2012 i7 2.6 fully spec matte display …got it for fun ending up using it daily
I had the 2010 version of that and it was fine for 9 years. With HDD it chugged.
I used my 2012 for 5 years, didn’t even know about the ssd upgrade until after I had given it to my little cousin….
Not good for music and video editing anymore. It’ll overload even with Monterey OS, good fan, 16gb ram and 2 TB SSD.
It’ss not a 2012 MacBook Pro because I have it and I don’t see any speakers on the sides?? unless it is the mid 2012 modal smthing like that I guess?
The MacBook Pro 2012 you have could be the 13 inches version, that model doesn’t have speakers on the side and is apparently smaller (the keyboard almost goes from side to side)
@@jonathanlara1297oh I see.
I still have this bit sadly it no longer allows me to log in to iCloud.
Same here , but why ?
is it worth buying today?
Does it still support Lightroom? The cloud based version of Lightroom?
great video!
talk about editing, do you think that my ryzen 5 2400g gtx 1060 8gb of ram PC will be able to handle editing? im talking stock footage and audio files mostly from what i can imagine that i want my first video/s to look like, really have no idea how demanding it is and knowing that you used a lot of differenct pcs i thought you might know if im gonna be fine with mine.
cant wait for the se video too, i have considered selling my current iPhone and just buying a se, i really like small phones and you dont really have small androids, but again, with my screentime i dont think it would be a good idea.
I think that should be a good starter pc for sure! I would only edit 1080p to start, then as you do it more and more just slowly start to upgrade the components. Small phones are the future, I love this SE, functional, and not nearly the same addictiveness as the iPhone max models
@techno_eclipse i dont even know why people like the plus models
I have a 2012 Retina MacBook Pro and it’s great. Definitely not up to the task for editing video or photoshop but for regular computer tasks it works great. I have since upgraded to an M1 MacBook Pro 14 but my mum is now using the 2012 one with Mac OS Sonoma using the open core legacy patcher. Great how long these machines last with just a bit of care
How long does it last? I mean the battery?
@@TreasureOroyo it’s crap. Lasts about 30 mins if you’re lucky
@@TreasureOroyo battery life is crap. Lasts about half an hour
Can you do web design on it? With figma, webflow, illustrator, and Photoshop?
You can if you have at least 16gb ram and ssd drive
I have it but I can’t create iCloud or enter to it idk why ? I hope you reply to me , I think I need updates?
I have a MacBook Pro 15 inch mid 2012 laptop and I love it so much. I also have the 2024 MacBook Air 13 inch and I use the 2912 MacBook Pro more than the newer one
I bought a ipad and a MacBook for under 26 dollars with a mouse the iPad I already got working. I wanna know how to upgrade ittttt but he said it's a no go
I have had one since new and with the upgrade I edit 4k vids via imovie, some vids are 1hr 30mins. Just need to upgrade the OS and the letter e is playing up.
i got the 15'' one for 160$, I am really surprised that it has 2k Display in a 2012 laptop, keyboard is insanely good, but it heats that it can hurt your fingers when typing lol
This laptop is used hacking purpose and coding purpose please tell me
When the "Pro" actually mean "for professional users"
Is it good for forez trading only?
bro how did you update software
I've got one lying somewhere at home. Definitely needs a screen and battery replacement. But don't know if its worth it
Yeah, these are really only worth about 100 bucks or so now. A screen replacement might eat most of that value up
I would recommend it in fact I'm using a mid 2012 Macbook pro daily yes with Sonoma through open core legacy patcher its great for web browsing, light games such as Minecraft java and Rob-lox both running very well at high settings without mods things like garage band and video editing apps start to struggle a bit but TH-cam will normally play videos on highest res automatically widgets menu lags a bit but after its closed you have no lag anymore I have tried sequoia on it I don't recommend putting it on a 20212 mac book does not work the best, at least not yet, overall its still a great everyday laptop great for a student as a school/home use laptop. I did however not pay anything for mine as I found it in the trash.
i have the same laptop. but its hang and bit slower.. i dont know what is the issue
Try a fresh OS install in a ssd
any recommendations on docking stations/dongles for dual monitor setup on the 2012 MBP?
I am not sure, I know you are capped with speeds on the sata drive. But I am not positive how many ssd's you could put in there
you can chunk in 2TB ssd in each slot ( other slot with hdd caddy of course replacing the dvd ) and set it up in raid configuration. im using 2tb in main bay and another 2tb hdd as a data cold drive in the dvd and its working like a charm.
( im using sata 2.5" ssd fyi )
The shopkeeper is asking for $150 for this laptop. Should I buy it?
i5* 8GB-Ram*
Is this good for trading ?
whats the best OS to run on this in 2024?
Running big sur here and works perfectly.
Chromeos flex works
Hello my friend.
Hope you're doing well! I've got a favor to ask. I'm trying to fix a corrupted .mov file that was originally shot on my MacBook Air 2012, but I don't have that laptop anymore. My recovery software needs a sample video from the same model to work its magic. Could you help me out by shooting a quick 30-second video on a MacBook Air 2011 and sending it over or uploading the original file somewhere I can grab it? Really appreciate any help you can give!
Thanks a bunch!
Got an i5 2012 on facebook marketplace for 65 bucks, after giving it 16gb of ram and a new ssd, cleaning it and repasting the cpu, I spent the total of 100 bucks. And it's running sequoia 😂 it's awesome. It's actually my daily laptop.
Can i use this laptop for coding pleasw tell
I seen one for $40 with 256gb HDD should have grabbed it ..
I got my 15 inch 2012 mac pro same specs as that boxed on ebay for £30 some woman thought it was broken, it just had no OS ahhahaha
I think im going to upgrade mine, I'd want to get a ifixit battery, crucial ssd and ram. Also maybe new feet, she's seen some things....
Do it! All of those things are dirt cheap now. 16gb of ram is so cheap for this laptop.
@@techno_eclipse Best part is my macbook pro was free, hand-me-downs are great...
Leave memories as memories and buy a used m1.
The speakers, screen, heat generation, and battery life are all not good.
Cracks are unstable and limited
5:34: of course it doesnt work well. premiere on apple is useless
Not M series. Works better than my 3700x with RTX 3070.
Good watch
Truman Show is GOATED!
I would have never guessed the truman show is your favorite movie ever lolol thats such a random movie i wouldn’t have guessed
It is very random, but it is just so good. "In case I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening, and good night"
Dont think anyone was opening ebay to look for this dinosaur
No,but i found one for free and seeing if its worth upgrading it
I just got a 2012 i5 and i7 in a lot for $180 on eBay. I'm a tinkerer though, and really miss my 2012 for light tasks.
@@KelzCasa My sister studies with a windows laptop around the same date as this and i was wondering if i should upgrade it and spend around 80 euros on this one and give it to her

@@yoyoyomynameisjo6006 - It’s worth it if you’re not video editing or playing games.
@@yoyoyomynameisjo6006 you can always put Linux on it and it'll run as good as day 1 launch.
Mine was extremely slow. Put Ubuntu on it.

I do love my self some thick sides.. I mean on the mackbook

So lost and confused
thats nothing i use a 2010
Dragged my icloud file from Safari and i got all my files on desktop. It lets you download iOS. Updated RAM and SSD. Last option for dummy apple people like me.
