  • It can be hard to decipher what pedals you need to get great guitar sounds. Particularly in the Alt-Rock/Indie/Shoegaze space. Today we're looking at 5 guitar pedals that I don't think you need
    We're going to look at each pedal and why I don't think you need to buy them, and what I would chose instead, or how to just get it from your existing rig! Let me know what you think in the comments!

      The phase shifter into a russian muff is great for psychidelic sounds I agree on the other pedals, but just get a small stone and maybe a boost before. The boost will amplify the phasing sound. It's great. I use it more than chorus.

    I prefer a flanger to a chorus because you can get the chorus sound from a flanger and then some ridiculous noises too. I like a compressor at the end of my shoegaze board to bring the tails of the reverb up in the mix. I go reverb -> fuzz -> od-> Flanger -> compressor -> delay. But then I’ve built all those myself so the whole board cost me less than a boutique fuzz!

  • @BrandonBames
    @BrandonBames 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Dude you should try setting up a flanger like a chorus sometime. It's like the same feel as chorus with a little extra thickness that really adds to the atmosphere and kind of gets into "organ-like" territory with chords. Medium speed and very light effect. Love your content, and I love that you're the "shoegaze" guy! Please keep making videos as you're filling a niche that is so often overlooked.

      I kept my tremolo and compressor. Sold my phaser, univibe and chorus. Though I have chorus in my Old Blood Noise Endeavours Excess V2 and in the EHX Canyon delay (delay at minimum). I don't only play shoegaze though. I have a mini compressor for my clean tone, and I use the compressor lightly to level out the notes on more ambient stuff. I sold my EQ too. Actually, traded it for a DigiTech reverb, sold the reverb and made a buck. 😂

    • @nedim_guitar
      @nedim_guitar 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ratatatuff I get that. I just wasn't using my UniVibe in what I was playing, so it had to go. The wah-pedal... I can't say I tried it out a lot. But it was the cheapest Vox wah out there, which I also bought used for like 40 euro. I bet that if the wah-pedal was better, if it had more range , I would have kept it longer. But for now, I have no need for it. So it too had to go.
      However, my Digitech Whammy Ricochet is important, along with the Old Blood Noise Endeavors Excess V2! I get a surprising amount of versatility, or at least inspiration from those pedals, in combination with my delays and reverbs.

    Generally agree with tremolo, but the last pedal I picked up was the Skitter from Champion Leccy and that thing is such a wild and creative take. It has a modulated reverb with different voicings, and you're able to use the tremolo on either the dry signal or the reverb, and you can make them stutter in sync or out of sync with each other, so it ends up being this really unique and detailed modulation/spatial tool. Lots of different uncommon wave forms too for the trem. Unexpectedly has a beautiful little overdrive in it too.

    I have found the GE7 and Dyna Comp really useful pedals - the GE7 means I don't have to switch guitars to getting really contrasting sounds from a full bodied humbucker to something closer to single coils or vice versa - which in some songs gives some great changes of sound and tone. I also really like being able to use the Dyna Comp as a clean boost or to just add a little sauce when playing quiet. Agree re chorus and ability to make that cover lots more than just a simple chorus. My MXR Analog Chorus can sound flanger-esque as well as almost phaser like - saving me buying two other pedals. I definitely wouldnt bother with wah wah if I didnt have one already or volume pedal...

    Personally with tremolo, I think you can use it almost like the vibrato arm on your guitar to get some cool stuff, if you set the rate all the way up, and make the waves really choppy. It's a good way to spice stuff up while still keeping your guitar in tune.

    Nice video! I have to disagree on the phaser/flanger thing though: If you use an EHX Small Stone that has no mix knob - fine, it can be too much. But any modulation pedal with a bit more control over your sound and the intensity of it is gonna give you loads of options to not make it sound dated or stuck in a certain music (sub-)genre.

      I agree, if you just mess around with the flanger or Phaser settings then it wont sound as "dated." On the other hand, there is a DIFFERENCE between a regular Phaser and a Phase-Shifter, and for the reasons in this video, i traded my Phase- Shifter in for a normal Phaser. I just could not get the Phase-Shifter to not sound cheesy sounding. A regular Phaser though can easily be tweaked for modern music. As for saving money and space on your board, just buy a multi modulation effect pedal

    I agree less is more. Playing straight into the amp (all pedals off) really helps to reveal where more practice is needed. I use light compression which also adds a clean boost. Helps when forced to play at lower volumes to add sustain. If I played at my preferred volume, I'd get a visit from the cops! LOL!! I substitute an old Dunlop uni-vibe for chorus. My uni-vibe starts to sound like a phaser when heavy distortion is added, so I'm careful not to push it. Just trying to find a nice tonal balance. Great video!! Cheers!

    EQ pedal isn't crucial but is low-key one of the most shoegaze pedals ever. While shaping a distortion pedal's tone is important for walls of sound ala MBV, it's also useful for creating filter sounds similar to what's heard in techno music. They're important to Shield's sound (he cranks certain mid frequencies to overdrive them on amps/ speakers)

    Man, I love my Phase 90. I use it way more than my EH Small Clone Mini-Chorus. The mini-chorus I have is from 1980 and says "Mini-Chorus" instead of the typical Full-Chorus. It's the same pedal, it's just a rare name change that lasted like a year in 1980-81. I used chorus in a post-rock/hardcore band in the early 2000s. Today my modulation is mainly the phase 90 though. I have it barely turned on its single knob. It sounds really awesome with Wren and Cuff Smallfoot Caprid.

    Phasers are one of my favourite fx so I'm probably a bit biased when i say this. They can really work well for adding a psychedelic edge in Shoegaze or Dream Pop stuff. My first tip would be to experiment at slow speeds/rates first. Some phases work better in the fx loop and others in front of amp Understand the phaser and what the parameters can do and then experiment away. I like to use an Ibanez PH7 Phaser in the front of my amp but behind all the dirt/od. I like a MXR phase 90 or FLAMMA FC13 Analog Phaser in my amps fx loop. Putting a phaser before or after a reverb or delay has a massive sound difference so check that out.

    I almost posted a pushback but then double checked the title and saw you were talking about a specific musical genre.
    Until recently I had been a user of multiFX systems such as the Boss GT-5 and GT-8. I decided to go down the pedal route and bought a selection of mini pedals and then a large selection of Behringers. I was looking to see what was out there and they included a phaser, a tremolo, EQ and a chorus vibe. I have none of them on my main pedal board. I like the phaser for soloing to prog rock type stuff but a good reverb can do a similar job. The rest? I don't use them.
    I don't play alt much but I would say that if you have the space on your board, a phaser and a chorus is a decent combination if only to save you having to change settings from one song to the next. If space is an issue, I agree with chorus over phaser. It is more versatile thus more useful.

    Well-made video man! I'd have to disagree about the phaser sounding dated compared to the chorus though. The chorus leans more easily towards this really cheesy 80s territory while a phaser is a lot more atmospheric to me (see: Slowdive). I personally like both effects but I think phaser is more versatile. I also disagree with what you said about the wah, since I really love Dino Jr. and Yuck, which both use the wah really uniquely and in less of a classic rock kind of way.
    Btw, I'd have to agree with you on compression pedals. I know they have their practical uses, but dialing in your gain staging takes care of that for me. I also dislike how they tend to get rid of dynamics

    • @thesethingsmakenoises

      I do think chorus can sound cheesy if it’s used wrong! Yeah that’s a great point. Slowdive doesn’t sound dated, and Dino Jr are so awesome. Sorry wahwah pedal!!
      I think potentially it’s an irrational hatred because when I was about 15 somebody reviewed my band and wrote in the article “he should dispatch the wah pedal along with his gcsc notes in the bin” or something similar haha

    This just seems like you've not learned the myriad of ways these effects are used and judging them based on the most basic versions of them out there and their most famous uses. A one-knob phaser is always going to be limited, but that doesn't mean phaser cannot sound 'modern'. Tremolo is the oldest guitar effect there is and its still being used and if an album like The Bends can sound contemporary around 50 years after the effect was invented, there's no reason to say its now 'dated'. A pedal designed to emulate a 60's amp tremolo isn't going to fully represent what the effect can do.
    I used to use 2 Small Stones on a pedalboard at one point. Heavy compression is ideal for volume swells, tapping and other techniques. A tempo synced tremolo can change the envelope of the sound whilst adding a rhythmic element. Phasing can add movement to all of this. Fixed wahs can be used as a boost and combined with other effects and techniques can be more like a synth than 70's Porn soundtrack or wailing solos.

    I agree with your sentiments about modulation pedals but have my own reasons. I think chorus is much more useful as it can vary between very subtle and very over-the-top, while I find phaser / flanger / tremolo and even wah to be a bit one dimensional. I think the above are fine as occasional ‘flavours’ to spice up songs but in terms of using them all of the time on my board, for me they’re a waste of valuable real estate

    I didn't have an EQ pedal when I did more guitaring (I gig on bass these days in a cover band). I've seen the benefits of EQ as a boost by others and would likely do the same if I ever work as a guitarist outside our spare room. EQ works as a great boost for bass too (I only use it on The Chain by Fleetwood Mac boosting everything a dB and the kids about 5dB).
    Chorus, flanging, phasing and trem are all much the same to me, but I find phasing works best for me (or did). I bought a trem a few years back when I attempted to try to play rockabilly but haven't touched it since (but sounded great with a crunchy amp. However, I don't actually do anything remotely "shoegazy".
    In the last band were I was guitarist (95, maybe 96) I'd have had my Fuzzface or MT2 EQ'd to muff/fuzz and done something along the lines of Caress of Steel or Fly By Night by Rush which would have made our drummer think I was playing something by Smashing Pumpkins to get him to draw upon his inner Jimmy Chamberlain (I was a bit of a bastard in that respect and, although my ideal band to have ripped off was Superchunk, I tried to straddle a Nirvana and Pumpkins hybrid). It was the only band that I was in that I wish could have gone beyond the rehearsal room, but alas I believed I was dry of lyrics and the vocalist didn't write while the drummer pulled out when his girlfriend had their first child.

    Agree mostly, but there is one thing that I think changes some of your choices and is a very important to the Shoegaze style specifically, not alt necessarily. That is that Shoegaze starts AT THE END of the chain by putting distortion AFTER EVERYTHING - delay, reverb, modulation, everything. Putting a phasor before distortion instead of after makes it less "phasey." You can also turn down the feedback on the phaser. I agree, though that chorus rather than phase is a good choice for Shoegaze because it also has a pitch thing going on. But, the key to the Shoegaze sound is distortion, and too much of it, AFTER everything else.

    • @thesethingsmakenoises

    I don't think you should outright eliminate any one effect type.Compression is vital for clean sounds, and they can be a big part of driven sounds as well if you choose a circuit with character,- like the Janglebox or Cali 76.
    There's a ton of Flangers and Phasers out now that escape the histronics normally associated with them; if you made that claim 15 years ago, I'd agree, but not now.The OBN Flatlight, Dreadbox Komoreebi, and EQD Pyramids are all good examples.Walrus builds designs that can do both traditional and non traditional effects; the Monument and Julianna have been staples for me since their release.
    I appreciate the spirit of the idea, but I think claiming that all these pedals have been fully explored isn't true; hell, even the Wah can be incorporated effectively if you think outside of the box.
    I play both Ambient and more traditional (post) Rock, and I've long sought out designs that work well in both areas; they are out there, you just need to do the homework.
    I was playing Industrial before all these options existed, and back then there was a definite emphasis on keeping it as simple and manual as possible.To my thinking, the effects come in to introduce variables and move in directions otherwise impossible or unlikely.If they are writing or structural tools, then I'm in.

    Actually I WOULD advise against buying a tuner for someone who is trying to be thrifty with their money or pedalboard space. There are other types of pedals and multi-effects that have a tuner built in. I use a tuner/looper combo, for example, it’s small, inexpensive and provides two functions. Or if you simply don’t like squinting at the floor while tuning you can tune via clip on tuners or any computing device that has a screen.

  • @thepilgrimplays
    @thepilgrimplays 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    As an alt./shoegaze/grunge/stoner guitar player, I have to disagree with almost the whole video 😆 Having a tuner pedal takes away any remaining punk-hardcore attitude, just that thrill of playing with a couple of strings slightly flat and having to compensate that with your playing, which can be harmonically pleasant in an unpredictable way sometimes. And I just hate to have a pedal that doesn't do any sound, so a clip-on tuner is the way 😆
    The flanger is the most versatile effect, and you can make it sound very close to any other effect.
    The EQ pedal is the secret weapon to shape your sound, and it's really not the same as tweaking the eq on the other stages of the signal chain, because that pedal interacts in a very versatile and unpredictable way with the other pedals and with the amp... We wouldn't have Josh Homme if the didn't crank the mids with EQ pedals. I wouldn't have my edge-of-breakup kind of dark clean sound. The Behringer clone of the Boss costs close to nothing.

    • @thesethingsmakenoises
      @thesethingsmakenoises  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha I can’t actually work out what is satire in this lol 😂
      Re EQ pedal, do you think that’s not more to do with dialling the mids up on amps etc?

    • @thepilgrimplays
      @thepilgrimplays 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not really, as I said it interacts in many different ways with the other pedals depending on how they react, and where you place the EQ (before, after, etc.), and how it interacts with every different amp.
      EQs on the amp, daw, etc. have their own limited range and different voicings, so you can push or cut even more with the EQ pedals, and moreover different EQ pedals will have their own ranges and voicings.
      You really cannot get the Josh Homme sound, for example, if you don't crank the sh*t out of the mids (with some weird old solid state or Ampeg amp) in every stage of the signal chain (the board, the amp, the preamp, etc.), even using more than one EQ pedal, so they all add on top of each other, interacting and distorting in many different and unpredictable ways.
      And also all the rest that I've said I was serious, not making satire 😂 Regarding the flanger, there is really a video on TH-cam about how to make it sound kinda like all the other effects.

  • @softlightsymphonyband
    @softlightsymphonyband 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The FB-2 is a sleeper pedal that few understand the versatility of for doing things other than just trying to emulate standard guitar feedback. Put it BEFORE your fuzzed/delays/reverbs and it allows you to get ebow like drones And still have your hands free to play as needed rather than hold an ebow, etc. and when you keep playing into it when it is feeding back you can get some insane harmonics and overtones that can’t be replicated otherwise and that sound insane through delay/reverb.
    The biggest thing that people need to do to stop sounding dated is stop rising the whammy bar like a Kevin Shields wannabe: it sounds super contrived and dated and is lazy from a creative standpoint.

    I really appreciate the production quality of these videos but I really disagree with this advice and the premise- an EQ pedal is the single most educational and satisfying pedal to learn with and fine tune your tone.
    Most of us do not have the luxury of playing with sound guys who will find the good and bad frequencies and notch them out or add the correct amount of compression- and even If you are playing with a great sound guy the more you can do personally (especially with volume levels+compression) before laying your tone in their lap makes their job easier and means you will probably be more satisfied with the end result.
    The more you can do before you hit the sound guy, the better it is for everybody.
