Once Upon an Apocryphal Christmas...

  • Christmas in the Apocryphal Gospels is strange. In this video, we’ll explore the festive stories and Christian writings that didn’t make it into the Bible. After all, the Christmas story in the Bible is very brief, so delving into these unofficial texts reveals colourful extra details. Like dragons, a walking/talking baby-Jesus, and an obedient tree giving Mary its fruit.
Ever heard of the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, The History of Joseph the Carpenter, The Gospel of Pseudo Matthew, or the amazingly named Protoevangelium of James? Nowadays, we’ve largely forgotten that these hidden stories even exist. But they’ve always been there, especially in religious art. Had the apocryphal gospels been included in the Bible, they would have dramatically changed how the Christmas story is told. Something to think about: to what extent were the Apocryphal Gospels part on an original Christmas story?
I really hope you enjoy this one, and do check out my new podcast The Interruption. I’m so excited to share it with you all - it’s been a year in the making. Thank you for a great year here on TH-cam and for 730k subscribers!

I always noticed that a donkey and a bull figure are always put near Jesus crib, but we never questioned it nor really think about it.

7:22 I actually remember this from an obscure Christmas carol we sang in youth choir! It’s called “the cherry tree carol” and it’s from the Middle Ages when weird theology was all over the damn place.
The only difference between the song and the story in the video is, in the song Jesus hasn’t been born yet. The tree is commanded to bow by unborn fetus-Jesus so his momma can snack on some cherries. Also, Joseph is salty because he literally just found out that Mary’s pregnant and it’s not his kid, but then the tree bows for her and Joseph is all like “holy crap, she really WAS knocked up by god. This is kinda awesome. Alright, we’re cool Mary, I’m okay with this”.

Tommy I just wanted to say since this is the first video you’ve released in a bit - I ADORE the Intereuption. I’m addicted to it and each episode I’m trying to guess who we’ve heard that may have actually been the guy. My current theory is it’s the older British gentleman who was knowledgeable about aerials and said he was putting one up the day of the event!! That guy. Think you talked to him from the Facebook page. Don’t remember the guys name. Just wanted to give you my appreciation. A very very good podcast

may I mention that its actually more likely that the Christmas tree was a German innovation, as the Teutonic knights whose job it was to wipe out Baltic paganism are recorded as having set up a tree in Christmas and danced around it. If it were pagan, that'd be an odd thing for devout Christian crusaders to do.
It could've been a Germanic pagan tradition, but if so it was integrated into Christian lore early in Germany, early enough to allow holy crusaders to think it was just fine and not heretical in the slightest

The date of Christmas actually comes from a calculation by one of the early church leaders, who believe Jesus was conceived during one of the feast days, and based on his calculation, Jesus' birth landed on Dec 25th. Interestingly, some others in the east made similar calculations, but landed on Jan 6th as the date, and from what I understand, the twelve days of Christmas was created to bridge the gap between the two points of view.

Ohmygod I love your videos so so so much! Thank you for the podcast, I am looking forward to listen to it! Btw in my country, Czechia, we have traditions of making little "Betlehems". Those are tiny sceneries made from paper, wood, ceramics or basically anything you can imagine and they present the picture of the holy family right after a birth of baby Jesus. We always include donkey and the ox in those, it´s a necesity and quite literally I´ve never thought where did they come from. So thank you for explanantion!
