- Exploring the Mirboo North Branchline! (Grand Ridge Rail Trail)
In Todays video we explore the Mirboo North branch line! The line branched off from Morwell and we will trace the remnants of the line from Morwell to Yinnar and then begin the Grand ridge rail trail and see what’s preserved along the line!

Great and informative video, can’t wait for the Daylesford one!
Cheers mate! Keen as to shoot with ya
That bridge leads to briquette factory. The line to Mirboo Nth ran out through Hazelwood Rd, where the rose garden is today. I am Morwell born and bred and rode one of the last trains out Mirboo Nth and back. I still have a memory of sitting with the station master at Mirboo Nth and being shown about, I was 7 and my first train trip alone, or so I thought.
As a foot note, the rail trail was a great ride on a dirt bike.
Cheers for that! Am aware now!! And that sounds fantastic !!
Good video. As mentioned by someone in an earlier comment, the line to Hazelwood station was on the west side of Morwell and went through where the Rose garden is now located. Just on the Boolarra side of Yinnar, a spur line branched off to the west and went to a quarry in the hills, which provided a lot of the bluestone ballast for the railway. The Yinnar Historical society has a video taken of the remnants of this line taken after the bushfires went through and cleared the scrub about 15 years ago. You should also do a walk or ride along the rail trail between Boolarra and Mirboo North as there are some interesting original brick culverts crossing under the trail.
Cheers for that!! Some interesting stuff to see left ! And yes! Was struggling a bit find the start of the alignment!
The site of Hazelwood can be seen on google satelite images, but no longer publicly accessible. I suspect the reason you couldn't locate it is that you were looking on the wrong area. The former Briquette siding did originally go to Hazelwood power station, but this was never part of the Mirboo North line. The Mirboo North branch swung away from the mainline on the western side of Morwell station. The Morwell Centenary Rose Garden is on the formation. Maryvale Crescent having been the original main road to Yinnar. The corner of Applegates and Homestead Roads (south of the open cut) is where Hazelwood station had been. Homestead Rd went around the station ground at that time but now crosses straight over it. Unfortunately the road is now closed to the public anyway.
A point of interest is that J550, now at Noojee, had first been preserved at Mirboo North station along with a BPL and Z van before it was later moved to Warragul.
Cheers for all the info!! Definitely lots of interesting stuff!! Appreciate it! Will keep looking into it!
Good effort mate, great to see you having a crack.
If you ever want to do Moe-Walhalla Railway, hit me up. I can show you basically where the easement is that left moe all the way to the first stop, and some sections from Gould to Moondarra and Moondarra station site
Cheers! And yes might get to that one day!
Love these vids you make, growing up our neighbour had relies living in Mirboo nth and I can remember us going up there by train one day. I only have a very small snipit of memory as I would only have been around 3 or 4 but I do remember being on a motor rail at Mirboo nth
Cheers! And that’s a great memory to have!
I used to travel this line in a Walker railcar on a weekly basis. Probably one of the most beautiful lines in Victoria. Great video
Cheers! Would be some great memories !
Thank you for sharing our history, we live very close to the line near creamery rd Yinnar, great to see the bits we havent seen. Would be interesting to know why only the rail trail was developed only from Boolarra and not from Yinnar. Good work thanks
Thanks for watching!! A beautiful area and would love to come back soon!
Nice video mate. I have only been to Mirboo North station, Its good to see it still standing and being used for something useful. - Nicholas.
Cheers mate!!!
Another great video mate well done
Cheers James !
Cool shirt
Cheers! It’s from the Yarra Valley Tourist Railway!
Sick video mate!
Cheers !!
Thank-you for another wonderful vid. I hope you do all 2'6" VR lines. I rode the last special in Colac to Beach Forest when I was 3 and have memories of that day. I've also tracked the Wangaratta to Whitfield line and there's quite a bit to see if that. Anyway thanks for your vids and a good consistent format. Always a bit more fun when you have someone tag along too.
Cheers mate! Glad you’re enjoying the channel! I do have plans to do them eventually ! Big trips
Great video as always bro. If anyone was struggling with an idea for a layout, this branch line would be amazing to model
Cheers man!! It definitely would be too!
Sad to see another line gone.
But never forgotten.
Part of history !
