I started growing Dahlias about 4 years ago, thanks to you. ❤
I live in Iowa Zone 5a. I didn't have time to dig my Dahlias last year, we had such a mild winter that the ones on the South side right up against the house have come back. I'm so delighted ❤

Thank you! I am in mid Michigan in zone 5b.
I've always wanted to grow dahlias, but have not tried yet. This has helped me see them a bit differently and better understand their needs..... so when I do try, they'll have a better chance of survival and thriving.

I’ve used a natural pesticide that’s safe for bees and it’s gotten rid of them. It didn’t get rid of the earwigs that keep eating my dahlias though.

I planted Dahlias in March 2024 not knowing what to expect.
Well, I got Dahlias that grew well. Too well. I had to put posts up to support them.
While 6 of them grew tall, three did not. Inam thinking of transpkantin the shorter ones to b thecfront and the others to the back, perhaps during the holidays
I need to put up a screen about 18-24" up to support them and strings further up to suppirt the flowers.

Great video Erin , I’ve been growing Dahlias for only 3 years and had good success with overwintering them in my basement . This year a purchased a couple bags from Costco and started them indoors, can’t wait to plant them outside. Greetings from Massachusetts

I have a question. One of my dahlias came up just beautifully, but my garden nemesis, earwigs, ate all the leaves...twice before I remembered to sprinkle Diamatacious earth around the plant. But now there are green stalks about 6" high with no leaves and they have been that way for about two week. Do you think they will push out more leaves? Should I trim back the stalks slightly? Should I fertilize? Or is there something elseI can do to rescue this plant?
I live an area where it is pretty dry from May through October in California Zone 8b/9a and I use a drip system for supplemental water during those months as needed. Thanks

Great video as always!! I’ve been growing dahlias for a few years now, but I still struggle with overwintering! This year, I’m going to try a humidifier in Dahlia Storing room. Do you think that would help or do you think it would be too much moisture?

Hey Erin. I garden in 5 zones higher than you. we don't have to lift dahlias persé but it can rot in the ground because they go dormant in our rainy season. Would you suggest we cover the ground with plastic to keep them dry.

Greeting's from Ireland, good video, I don't have them in my garden but my mother loves them and so do the slug's. They go hell for leather on them and I've told her to put down slug trap's but she let's nature take it's course. I'd like to grow them but I have nowhere to store the tuber's over winter and my bed's are full.

Last year I planted some dahlia seeds. I got eight plants and of those I lost one. I left them to die off in the garden. This year they all came back! And they spread seeds all over so I have over twenty new plants this year! I'm slightly worried they will become invasive. Mine are already blooming.

I just planted my last several dahlias tonight and found one that had overwintered and the sprouts were about 3 inches tall. I was shocked. I'm in Zone 5b SE Wisconsin. There was no mulch covering the clay soil where it was planted last year. I'm definitely going to try and overwinter some this fall just for fun.

We planted two dahlias when we moved into this house four years ago…we lost one, but the other one has continued to come back every year, without me digging the tubers out. We are in zone 7b (or so they say!😅). I did mulch over it a couple years ago, and was glad because that winter was severe…however this past year I did not mulch and it’s coming back! I believe it’s called “sunset.” I’d like to plant more, and thanks to this video and your tips I’m going to do just that!

Great video, Erin! I'm in zone 6a and while I dug some of my dahlias, I left others in the ground and put some extra spent potting soil on them over the winter. I have some coming back for the second time now. I started some new dahlia from Floret's seeds this year. Germination was great , some are in pots, others will be going in the ground this week.

Dahlias are such amazing plants. There are so many different types and colors to choose from, and they make the most gorgeous bouquets. My house faces true South and each year the Dahlias that I have planted next to the South wall of my house over-Winter in the ground and come up in the Spring. I think the radiant heat from the house and its foundation, and the true South exposure make this possible. That was a great video about Dahlias Erin and is sure to inspire viewers to try growing Dahlias, if they haven't already. Be well.

I bought my first dahlia tubers this year from big box store...maybe a month or so ago. I went to plant them today and they look dried out and are squishyyyy :( Was this my fault, was I to store it in some way before planting it? I just had them sitting around in my kitchen with the rest of my seedling situation area. I don't remember looking at the tubers when I bought it so not sure if I bought them this way or if I did something wrong, thanks!

Erin, it was a video you did 4 years ago that challenged my wife and I to grow Dahlias and we started with one plant that I bought while walking through Walmart and now we have a 20x60 cut flower garden! I would encourage everyone to give them a try and just see what happens. It's a whole new world of gardening when you add Dahlias to the mix. Just start a line item in your gardening budget and go for it!

As another viewer mentioned, this is also my first year growing dahlias and I’ve already learned something! In an effort to save garden space, I potted up several tubers that I thought looked a bit iffy when I received them. Thankfully they all sprouted. However, now they are gigantic in comparison to their buddies beside them. I didn’t even think of it. Now I’m having to make sure everyone stays friendly and doesn’t shade out their neighbor. 😄. Best news? I was able to locate 2 Waltzing Matilda tubers! Yours are so pretty and I was delighted to finally locate some.
