  • Hey guys some had a couple people say I should make a series on power upgrades on a ppump engine. So here is the first of a bunch to come.
Here is the list of what I would do in order
    - Fluid / filter changes if you don’t know last time they were done.
    - killer dowel pin fix ( kdp)
    - check fuel pressure and for boost leaks
    - fix fuel pressure issue if needed
    ( want Min of 25psi )
    - Air filter upgrade (Fleetguard AH1141)
    - Exhaust 4inch turbo back
    - pyro/ boost gauge
    - govern spring kit (gsk)
    - 60lbs valve springs at some time if you do 4K gsk
    -max your fuel plate out
( towards the front of engine )
    - add more injection time 16-17 degrees

Some really good advice here guys, I knew better but was towing up a hill that is known for killing vehicles and didn’t have a pyro, truck got hot because I was pushing it pretty hard and when I pulled over (night) the turbo was glowing red hot! I most definitely hurt things a bit but I am amazed I didn’t kill this engine.

You had mentioned you would include part numbers for those BHAFs (big honking air filters). I like the list of things to do that you have added. Very handy for those of us going through this. Thanks!

Oh man, this stuff is gold! I just got a P pump to convert my 98.5 24V, and have been watching everything on TH-cam that I can about P pump tuning, and your videos by far are the most entertaining and helpful. Refreshing to see real-world tips and tricks, and not just max fueling and smoke BS. Also very cool to see this content coming out of Canada too (I'm in Vancouver). I'm subscribed, and will be making my way through all of your vids! Cheers

Thanks for starting this series on how to turn up a P-Pumped Engine. Looking forward to following this. You mentioned timing by the plunger method. I think that would be an excellent video as well. If you agree, please explain how to set various degrees of timing and any math calculations, etc.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS replace the pump gear lock washer. Split style lock washers are a SINGLE USE part in all applications. They get deformed during installation, just like torque-to-yield head bolts. I've heard of them (re-used ones) breaking in half and falling into the gear train. I've never been a fan of this type of fastener lock in any application. I myself use a specialty wedge lock washer called Nord-Lock. But, the factory one is fine as long as it's brand new. I know Rob knows this, but I just wanted to emphasize it.

Great videos. I’m trying to do first mods on the 12v. My brother slapped a fuel plate #5. And just ordered 3-4K springs. But I have the 4” turbo back. What would my next best mod or move. I believe the KDP was replaced prior to me.

  • @darrinstone49

So adding these afc mods will allow the fuel to come on more gradually up to 40psi & give the rack more range aka more volume correct? I would like to tune 2 of mine for a clean burn while towing. Blowing smoke may look cook in the areas but on the road it just makes other drivers mad & gives us a black eye. The first is a stock 96 Ppump engine, what would be a good running combo of turbo & pump mods? The second is a built Ppumped 24V with a Hamilton cam, pump mods ect... was intended to go into an 01-02..... both live at 2800ft of elevation & up to 6k in elevation max around here... looking for a good turbo or combo again for good towing & mileage. Should I install an adjustable front gear on either or both. I will break up the questions more next time if it helps.
