Living in a Regional area (aka country area) I’m limited to what is stocked here. Having said that though I look at my diet when I was a kid. I unknowingly benefitted from the fact there just wasn’t even take away available. As a Mum I wasn’t that financially well off and learned from my parents how to plan a week’s menu & only shop for what I needed. So I didn’t throw things out and waste $. I had desserts as a child. My kids did not. They never had soda or fruit juice either. Mainly because of the expense. But they did have ice cream, home baked cookies, canned soups etc. But I did prepare everything from scratch. A necessity at the time but in hindsight my kids appreciate their diet. I have 3 sons. None are overweight, never have been, all of them can cook. None of them really even like UPF. So thanks for the validation of my food choices for them. Even though I didn’t really understand it at the time lol
Great video, Autumn!! ❤ My father grew up on a farm. God rests his soul. We had vegetable gardens & fruit trees in our California home in the 90s. I've taken a lot of the knowledge he bestowed upon me to be able to feed my family in the healthiest manner I was taught. A lot of people didn't have that advantage and are unaware of how damaging processed foods are for them. Thank you for helping spread vital information that needs to be put into the world!
I know a retired woman in her 70’s. She told me that she doesn’t cook anymore, hardly has any dishes to do. I asked her why & she said that she has been eating all microwave meals since her husband’s passing 12 months prior. 2 weeks after our conversation she found herself in ER & told that she was deficient in many minerals & vitamins especially B12 which affected her heart, BP & cognitive thinking. They kept in hospital for several days. Basically, she was undernourished eating highly processed microwave meals for every meal, every day .
I remember women's magazines telling us to microwave kitchen sponges to kill germs. Well germs are alive and so are enzymes and nutrients in food. Just started making me think cooking for in they wasn't wise. I use a toaster oven to warm up food at work. Avoid the microwave most of the time.
I think the lack of home cooking is at the crux of the matter. People don't have the skills, knowledge, time, or the patience to prepare wholesome, home-cooked meals. It's really sad. We need to get back to prioritizing the basics of meal planning, prep, and cooking as non-negotiable aspects of daily life.
I don’t see clickbait. She’s emphasizing processed foods. Which is under the umbrella of almost everything. My thoughts. I like her YT videos and information
Good stuff, Autumn. I make my own protein bars at home because most if not all, commercial protein bars are filled with extra ingredients. And the same goes for many other examples like you mentioned.
Wow! So much valuable info in this video! As someone who leads a food a issues group within a large recovery program, I really get the socially acceptable fact. If you came out of an AA meeting to fine the leaders serving wine and beer the whole group would be outraged. BUT, every week we come out of our food issues group to find the recovery leaders serving packaged cookies and chips. We have tried to change this practice, but nothing has worked accept for our personal choice to abstain.
Thank you Autumn! I've been pleasantly surprised to find organic ground beef in the grocery stores around me. Now I'm using your tips to create meals using them almost daily. Since finding you and buying your bundle, my sense of being well nourished is at an all time high!
I found it VERY educational when you distinguished between food processes. This is very beneficial. I listen to many broadcasts and podcasts. This is the first to explain the differences. Thank you!
This is a huge problem in our schools-constant sugary and packaged foods being given to our kids as "treats". Snacks are given at every school activity and celebration. One day, I kid you not, the kids in our class were given three donuts each because three separate parents sent in treats on the same day.
Not only is it socially acceptable to eat ultra processed food, but it's almost socially unacceptable to eat healthy. Once I was in the city with my kids and we were going to have to eat lunch really late and we were hungry, I didn't want something too filling, since we were going to be having lunch at some point, so opted for a bag of pre-washed salad and some cherry tomatoes which we shared. So many people looked at us like we were eating something weird, as if I was feeding my kids dog kibble or something! I don't think they would have if we'd been eating a bag of chips!
I knew highly processed foods were bad, and I don’t eat as part of my everyday diet, but this is MINDBLOWING!!! 😮 Luckily I LOVE to cook, and gre up in a home with home cooked meals every night!!! ❤
Awesome video but two big problems. Most fish at sushi restaurants Will be farm-raised and the can sardines you showed are skinless and boneless. Please do a video on wild caught and farm-raised differences and why it's better to have bone-in skin on canned fish. Thanks
There are many health benefits to cutting out refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup, most artificial sweeteners, white flour, vegetable/seed oils, artificial additives, and other ultra processed foods. Weight loss, decreased chronic inflammation, and reduced chances of serious diseases are just a few benefits.
What is 'addictive' is in the ingredient, 'natural flavor'. A company does NOT have to tell you what 'natural flavor' actually is. Food Babe has done the research and found that 'natural flavor' is almost always toxic and usually synthetic. I avoid ANYTHING with 'natural flavor' in it.
great video - the one thing that stumps me - the mortality age increased, not decreased. People ate much better back then but died earlier. I assume it was from lack of knowledge about things like environmental factors, etc. medicine has gotten so much better as well - imagine if they knew what we know now and medicine was like we have today? They would have lived much longer than we even are in this day and age.
They were also counting soldiers who died in the wars, people in more dangerous construction jobs, babies from mothers who didn’t have Ultrasound to check for problems, and higher degrees of smokers and drinkers than we have nowadays as well.
Gosh when I told a friend I wasn’t giving my child juice yet she was so offended and thought I was judging her. My child was 7 months and we were holding off until 1 to try sugar. It’s mind boggling how much pushback you can get by choosing a differed lifestyle
Yes! We need a shift to just eating REAL foods! We make a list…meat, fruits, veggies, dairy, and stick to it. Once you stop eating ultra processed foods, they no longer seem appealing and it’s easier to walk past everything in the grocery store
Government has a major role to play here. They can mandate what is allowed and not allowed in foods. Compare food that is available in Europe and the US. The quality of food in Europe is much higher. By way of example, when I was in France last year in a bakery, I was told that the French government mandates what you can put into their products.
I found the book "Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us" by Michael Moss really good for teaching just how and why I struggle with ultra-processed food. And you've got this!! Baby steps and learning from credible sources, like Autumn, help make this a sustainable journey. I am rooting for you 😊
😂 i did home ec in school. We spent 99 percent of the year on sewing, and then our final project was cook breakfast for the teachers. With no instructions. Can't believe they actually ate it and lived.
The most processed thing I still eat are potato chips and cheese. I have to sit and think really hard what I eat that's processed. I guess ground beef and chicken nuggets sometimes at work, but it's not everyday. Plus I barely even eat. I'm not even worried about calorie intake, I look more at macros and micros, which reminds me I need to restock on vitamins. Been feeling like crap without them. Carrots, peas and beans are a real go to for me.
The “processed” vs “ultra-processed” is very significant to explaining the problems with some foods. I really enjoyed this “Smoked Gouda” I used to buy till I decided to flip to the back and see it was more “cheese food” than cheese- so I switched to Havarti and Dubliner, but someone might think that all cheese was “bad” if they couldn’t recognize the difference. Same with Pasteurized vs Ultrapastuerized Dairy. One is brought up to a certain temperature and left there for a certain amount of time to kill off potentially bad bacteria. Ultrapastuerized dairy is brought up to super high temperatures for an instant, I’d guess because it’s faster for the company making it, and basically destroys anything and everything nutritional in the liquid.
Just wanted to let you know how much I love your TH-cam channel-lots of good info, quick pace, easy for those of us that are not nutritionists to pick up some very good advice.
100 years ago they didn’t know anything about health but they knew what made you fat. And 100 years ago it was NOT acceptable to be fat. Today, those 2 facts are switched around. Today we have all this health knowledge but it is acceptable to be fat and if you try to encourage someone not to be fat, you are yelled at for fat-shaming. That book at 1:41 was on the mark.
Came here to point out the seed oils (sunflower and safflower oils) and cane sugar in GEMS ingredient list. All highly processed and inflammatory to our gut. Google it. Agree with all you say otherwise, Autumn.
You should help this new administration especially RFK Jr. this is what he’s been talking about for awhile. I’m confident there will be a change in how our foods are made. If you look at the US verses Canada or the UK, the ingredients in the same foods are different. Ours being highly more filled with ingredients we don’t need or can’t pronounce. Sorry. Just my rant. Love your videos.
Hilarious to me that Michelle Obama tried to do this for kids lunches and the right had a big problem with it. Now that it's RFK, it's ok? Whatever gets people eating better I guess.
