I have been a casual fan of Eric Johnson for years...I am a Music Director of an Indianapolis High School....There is NOTHING wrong with his voice. He has a clear and distinct voice. It is quite good. Those who speak ill of it simply do not know what they are talking about and merit no further comment or discussion.
Erics got a great voice. This is one of my fav's by the Beatles. The amazing guitar work outshodows everything. Hell of a Rhythmn section also. Great overall tune.
Just saw EJ play live 2 weeks ago. Hasn’t lost a shred of his abilities. Get it? Shred? Anyways, the run he does right after the last slide bit at 3:13.... So. Damn. Tasty. Personally think he has the best tone of all time, and hearing it live is indescribable. Thanks for posting!
I respectfully disagree with the negative comments about EJ's singing. He's actually a very good singer. Listen to his vocal on "Kathy's Song" in my Faves list, or the studio versions of "Bristol Shore," "Trail of Tears," "Forty Mile Town" or "When the Sun Meets the Sky." His phrasing is excellent, he's rarely off-key, and he sings with genuine emotion. He's got a bit of a Bryan Adams-ish rough edge sometimes, but that fits his music and lyrics perfectly. To each his own, I guess.
Ken5244 you are correct. EJ is distinct and in his own lane with his singing and it is very good. Off My Mind is one of my fav vocal songs of his...from LP Tones
@staceyqfan Incorrect. According to Eric's liner notes for the SOUVENIR album, "this track was cut in the late 80s." Auto-Tune didn't come out until 1997.
paperback writter is not just a song or a guitar lesson , it's an anthem to all who wish to cross the line between the waltons and MASH that may not make sense at first , some of you may even dispise the waltons and mash or never even heard of them. lol foolish mortals , you all make me smile so deep , it's just unexplainable to some and others completely get it. try to think of it as beating the system.
lol , don't you all understand ? Paper back writter is from the beatles yes , but it's also a required study for all guitarists. as would be george harrisons ( gently weeps ) which has been proven by lukather. lol silly people , you all make me smile ear to ear when you don't quite understand the situation. I hope my input has helped you a little.
i like natural voices. he sings just fine. some like kiss, journey, acdc, foreigner, sting ,bono, morrissey, radiohead, coldplay, and all kinds of high pitched whiny voices, wailing for no reason, showing off to god knows who , without a whit of honesty or sincerity. as an example of a real voice try audrey hepburn's version of ''moon river ''.or marilyn monroe singing'' down in the meadow'' from river of no return. real , not fake . eric ain't no fake either
As we all know, EJ is a great guitarist. However, his solo albums never sold much. Personally, I think there was some great stuff early on in Mariani and Electromagnets--jazz fusion that I think was some of his best stuff. But he seemed to get stuck in one sound with his solo stuff. Personally, I think he should have done it like Jeff Beck getting a variety of talent around him to help write the songs. Almost all of EJ's stuff was written by him and it just got stale, thus little sales.
He sang Desert Rose. That's why I told him to stick to that. I still don't think Desert Rose sounds very good but stay away from singers like Paul McCartney (phenomenal voice).
just because one sings in tune doesn't guarantee that he'll have a compelling, much less original, style. his singing is weak, very weak. period. BUT... the guitar arrangement of this tune is bloody AWESOME!!! gets me goin', anyway...
@lewars1912 Why must you and everyone else be a very good singer if Eric is? If you'll clarify your oblique comment, I'll comment further. Should you decide to deride his singing, use musical terminology to describe why you believe he is not "a very good singer." Be specific.
@flyboyu777 OK, let's see. Eric Johnson seems like a really nice, nice guy, and he is a master technician. That said, he simply has terrible taste. Everything he does sounds like it was conceived in 1983. While I'm typing this, the solo is playing, and it's just covered in some sort of syroup-y flanger sound with a ton of delay. It sounds like a McFlurry with extra Splenda. So I can understand how Beatles purists might dislike this.
Very technical, clean, but too sterile and overproduced in my opinion. A weak version. And no, I can't play like him. Has great technical prowess but little passion or soul. Steve Via and Satriani are the same, technical, no passion or soul to their mysic.

I'd say it's an acquired taste, I definitely enjoy it
Eric Johnson is a genre all by himself. He sounds incredible with his vocals on this cut. Thanks for the great visuals too.

To Me the BEST of HIS BEATLES cover songs. GREAT.
this is soo great from ej! i'd like to hear him do more beatle covers!
I wish this song could go on forever.

I saw him at the Magic Bag. Man he was killer and better than ever. The theater was shitty but he was worth the price of admission
I think hes a great singer! Didn't know this recording existed... my band used to cover this nowere near as cool as this
All of my favorite Beatle's songs are covers by other bands, this one is no exception.
saw eric ~50 times and saw him do this once in either lubbock or amarillo
@staceyqfan

Great song, both this one and with Beatles.
Never really listened to much Eric Johnson. Shame on me. This is really good.
@ejmusk this is funny! you guys are ridiculous!

Sweeeeet!

@tbakersapphire My brother actually bought that 45 when it first came out. I may be an old fart... but he's older.
When it comes down to it,In the end we are all the off spring of The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix ect.
Hmmm. Who do you think sang My Desert Rose?

EJ is a prolific artist.
BEAT-TLE!!!
i like the vocals in cliffs of dover
Seriously. Does it get any better than this? Nope!
Beatles?

lol. I like the TP for my bung hole remark. I really love EJ's playing so beautiful and so smooth. BUT his singing makes me wince! Sorry!
He sang Desert Rose. That's why I told him to stick to that. I still don't think Desert Rose sounds very good but stay away from singers like Paul McCartney (phenomenal voice).
uh yea its by the beatles ..duh.

This was done in the 80s...maybe 70s
This is from the Beatles in 1966 he copied it
Thanks, but no thanks, EJ. You were not meant to sing. Stick to Desert Rose and Cliffs of Dover.
