Stevie Ray and EJ were friends. Stevie was quoted saying something to the effect of "Eric is a beautiful human being. He is so passionate about his work and works so diligently to perfect it" And, EJ always speaks well of S.R.V. It seems like I remember reading that EJ said said that "Stevie is a great guitarist and a better person."
July 20, 1990. I was there...along with Steve Stevens and NTK from Japan taping this. I ran to Tower after the show and grabbed Ah Via Musicom....what a great player!
I still feel the artistry of Eric is lost on many. His technical ability is absolutely secondary to his artistic vision. Even if he couldn't play blindingly fast pentatatonic runs he would still blow our minds with his amazingly intense intuitive sensitivities. His chord voicings almost make a person cry. He's THAT emotive.
I have been plaing guitar since I was 15 in 1965.......There are some pretty amaizing guitar players who have come down the highway......btu Eric Johnson and Steve Morse are probably the two most incredible ones in the last twenty years. I hear Hendrix in there. among others.
@rmsolympic1 Amen to that. I met the humble and gifted Eric Johnson in 97 and told him "no ones music" in my adult life has affected me so positively as his and I thanked him for it. He was just so gracious...
I know alot of people who can't stand his voice, or the way he makes his guitar sound violin like. I can't understand why you couldn't love this guy, but, to each their own. I think he's the greatest guitar player I have ever seen live, hands down. If it were up to me, he would have been hall of fame a LONG time ago, but he was never an Atlantic Records artist. Shame on the RROF for having the club filled with mostly Atlantic artists.
He used 2 of the same Mxr Flanger Doubler rack units that Dimebag famously always had on in doublng mode, but johnson used the flange in stero with one unit 180 degrees out of phase. These go for $500 on Ebay because of eric and dimebag!
@zzpot1000 I am too, this setlist blows away the 1988 Austin City Limits show that was released by New West. I hope that eventually this will get released in a purchasable format for all us fans to enjoy and marvel at.
@SlipNFall2g1c I've had this video for years, and would always say the exact same thing. And it always seems the directors know exactly when the MOST amazing guitar lines are, and purposely pan cut away so you don't get to see how they're done! lol
I actually read about it in some Guitar Player magazine. I'll try to find it and I'll get back to you, but it all does sound like jet-type flanging to my ear, anyway, even though I might be wrong.
@boobtuber06 I saw/heard Jimi himself in the Experience days. This guy is worthy. And the studio mix of this piece should be an example of "how it's done" in any sound school. When I tour, that's one of just three that I use to get the feel of a new room. This video shows he's not limited to studio tricks. The Fender Stratocaster is a unique instrument. It is a solid-body electric, but it isn't interchangeable with any other such ... EJ is worthy to keep exploring what it can do.
@MegaJuevos While I enjoy his singing, I like more how he evenly balances the songs with singing and the instrumentals. I want him to keep that ratio the same, I love his voice, but I feel that if he does too many songs with vocals, then we don't hear some beautiful jam style instrumental songs like Righteous and Manhattan
yeah, he is actually quite good. his voice matches his tone fairly well. it works just like srv, and his style. i would totally agree that his voice is pure and true. i would almost say that for some of his songs, its almost comforting?
Quote: The one lead tone that he was using in the early 90's was from a Howard Dumble amp." No offense, but that's incorrect. In numerous interviews over the years (Guitar Player magazine and others), Eric has said he used the Dumble amp for his "dirty rhythm" sound. In the 80s and early 90s he used his late-'60s Marshalls for his distorted lead tones and his various Fenders (Twins, Deluxe Reverbs mainly) for his clean lead tones (along with various effect pedals, of course).
That's correct sir. He split the signal post production on lead through 2 MXR units 180 degrees out of phase. Makes for a more stereophonic and intense woosh effect on the record!
Filler??? I beg to radically differ, buddy - what you've said is absurdly absurd. To my ear, Ah Via Musicom is a magnificent album from beginning to end, I mean every single song is just fantastic, but I could pick High Landrons as my favorite. It is a masterpiece!!!
Replying to myself ... roger and out for tonight. My big Lab hurt herself chasing a squirrel (tried to follow him up the tree), so my priorities call me away.
@MegaJuevos Eric's just about the only guitar virtuoso who CAN pull off the vocals. Mainly because he actually knows how to put together a vocal song unlike Vai for example.
@MegaJuevos Well he hasn't got the best voice ever but is nice for his style, with that guitar playing there's not much need of a perfectly magnificent voice anyway.
@boobtuber06 Hmmm ... kinda like saying that nobody should ever use Gene or Fred's dance moves. Or Leonardo's painting techniques. Just because they used their feet, or a paintbrush. The Stratocaster produces a signature tone. I KNOW! It's the only axe I'll play. When JImi died, I wanted more. EJ feeds that.
I believe he says "Thank You Very Much. That's called high landrons. And then he apologizes for the audience members plugging their ears. He says in the full tape that he is subject to a complex on turning the volume up.
Eric once mentioned on a facebook comment that if you look at the mountain ranges on old globes, the highest and roughest areas corresponded to known impassable regions which in globe and map making were called high landrons.
HAH! Ok ... If you're bored, you gotta seek further. My perspective is unique ... I mix FOH on tour (NOT Ej's genre), and you want BORED ... I wrote the book. Headphones, Earbuds in a bunk on a twelve-sleeper for years. EJ is one of the very few that I can count on to rejuvenate my "artistic" side.
I know! Stupid rap and pop, how can people listen to that junk??? There is sooo little talent in that! But stuff like this, this is pure genius! EJ is amazing!
Of all of the virtuos, past and present, this man most lifts my spirit, his music and his playing like some mighty, mythic, dragon-slaying hero.
Stevie Ray and EJ were friends. Stevie was quoted saying something to the effect of "Eric is a beautiful human being. He is so passionate about his work and works so diligently to perfect it" And, EJ always speaks well of S.R.V. Agreed! His tones as well!
EJ is sent down to us from the heavens to inspire us to be better in life .
Ah via musicom is a real piece of art... every single song is great!!! This one, one of my favorites. Eric SOS GRANDE !!!!
I have been plaing guitar since I was 15 in 1965.......There are some pretty amaizing guitar players who have come down the highway......btu Eric Johnson and Steve Morse are probably the two most incredible ones in the last twenty years. I hear Hendrix in there. among others.

Talent is where you start, Dedication is where you end up! Living proof!
I remember seeing E.J. and Rush here in Dallas. Great show!
Saw when it came thru chicago. Great show
I've seen him live 3 times in various sized venues. The show was awesome each time.
There really isn't a better guitarist alive then the mighty Eric Johnson ( well maybe phil keaggy, but Eric has such great tone, technique, and soul)
Can this not be the best performance any of you have EVER SEEN????
this is incredible stuff. i wish i had known this stuff earlier. its GOLD or better
Someone should fucking remaster this tape!
Master of "real acid rock." Thank God for this song, it is how I first got wind of this guitar god.
1of My top 3
For me, this version of "High Landrons" is the best song of Eric "The magician" Johnson
wuda loved to have heard Victory or Friends.
Quite an amazing performance.
I know alot of people who can't stand his voice, or the way he makes his guitar sound violin like. I can't understand why you couldn't love this guy, but, to each their own.

Music is not a competition.
Great voice as well!!
ohhh this is so great...thx for posting...Eric is ofcourse in da hall of fame
wow that was one awesome post..thx kmh..never saw any footage of that fabulous tune..always one of my favs
Still gives me chills!
i love the drummers expression. he's just like "fuck yeah man, uhh". hilarious.
Tommy Taylor makes great faces lol,
im wondering this as well. there are some really great performances from this show. some of his best imo.
THANK YOU
E.J. IS Gold.
One of the best
@JohnnyTsunami68 two mxr phase 90s together, im sure its phase and not flange, it has that transparent sound to it
He used 2 of the same Mxr Flanger Doubler rack units that Dimebag famously always had on in doublng mode, but johnson used the flange in stero with one unit 180 degrees out of phase. These go for $500 on Ebay because of eric and dimebag!

That flanger is killer
Nobody touches him. Buckethead is a close second but this guy.. wow.
Gotta love that flange effect he's using
omg i was born on that year O.o
Man I miss The Bottom Line !!!!!
Excellent Video Thks For The Upload!!! : )
thanks dude :)
@zzpot1000 Totally agree...
@SlipNFall2g1c I've had this video for years, and would always say the exact same thing. And it always seems the directors know exactly when the MOST amazing guitar lines are, and purposely pan cut away so you don't get to see how they're done! lol
His sound its awesome!!! ( His hair LOL )
I actually read about it in some Guitar Player magazine. I'll try to find it and I'll get back to you, but it all does sound like jet-type flanging to my ear, anyway, even though I might be wrong.

It wasn't I who talked about pentatonics, buddy!!!! It was EJsigstrat!!!! He does play those, but of course not just those. Anyway, it's all great.
@tommorellorules Probably THE coolest guitar tone I've ever heard.
@MegaJuevos While I enjoy his singing, I like more how he evenly balances the songs with singing and the instrumentals. I want him to keep that ratio the same, I love his voice, but I feel that if he does too many songs with vocals, then we don't hear some beautiful jam style instrumental songs like Righteous and Manhattan

i ask myself the same question everyday
What I know for sure is in the original studio recording he used two MXR flangers crossed.
That's correct sir. He split the signal post production on lead through 2 MXR units 180 degrees out of phase. Makes for a more stereophonic and intense woosh effect on the record!
@MegaJuevos i think he has a pretty good voice. its a little thin sounding but he's still pretty good and has a pretty decent range as well.
Filler??? I beg to radically differ, buddy - what you've said is absurdly absurd. To my ear, Ah Via Musicom is a magnificent album from beginning to end, I mean every single song is just fantastic, but I could pick High Landrons as my favorite. It is a masterpiece!!!
2 words. Red Rocks.
ah via musicom is the album
Actually, a lot of Vai's music has vocals performed by him.. very well, too.
What?
@jpdidit
What's "Modern Bullshit"?
He's using an old blueface MXR flanger/doubler.
I'm guessing that's a flanger he's using on this song. I'd love to know which one though???
That's such a phat flanger sound he has, is it the TC electronic chorus/flanger thing?
Replying to myself ... roger and out for tonight. My big Lab hurt herself chasing a squirrel (tried to follow him up the tree), so my priorities call me away.
@MegaJuevos Eric's just about the only guitar virtuoso who CAN pull off the vocals. Mainly because he actually knows how to put together a vocal song unlike Vai for example.
what abum is this in???
when?
@MegaJuevos Well he hasn't got the best voice ever but is nice for his style, with that guitar playing there's not much need of a perfectly magnificent voice anyway.
Anybody know what kind of phaser Eric is using here?
It is not a phaser. He is using a vintage MXR blue faced rack mount 126 Flanger/Doubler. No longer made but one of the best analog units out there.
MXR 128 flanger doubler rack mount.
Does he say 'stop that ladies' at the end of it or is it just me?
I believe he says "Thank You Very Much. That's called high landrons. And then he apologizes for the audience members plugging their ears. He says in the full tape that he is subject to a complex on turning the volume up.
@TinManSixtySix phasers
i believe the word your all looking for is 'Eric Johnson'
@NLmaxdamage je hebt gelijk :P maar ik ga daar verandering in brengen :D i'll promise you !!
@MegaJuevos
Yeah, the voice is great for his clean sounding guitar tone. A metal voice would've killed the song.
is that a flanger he uses
Sure is!
Ah Via Musicom
silly question...but what is landrons?
Eric once mentioned on a facebook comment that if you look at the mountain ranges on old globes, the highest and roughest areas corresponded to known impassable regions which in globe and map making were called high landrons.
If only the drummer could take it the fuck down a notch.
jim Duke FITE ME DUKE! IRLRIRLRIRLRIRLRIRLRIRL
