Shavo was OVERWHELMED by the 300,000 person crowd in Rio singing at the top of their lungs. Based on interviews he was overcome with that scene and the energy of the crowd. He called it one of the best moments of his career, so it's a positive emotion here. (I didn't see the comment mentioned her yet, so upvote for visibility)
that was the song that made me realize that they can give a real emotional kick and made me just go to tears. no band has done quite a melody so supporting of their depressing and horrifying lyrics.
Shavo's face full of tears at 26:08! 🥺 I've never watched this live version, but the vocal arrangements of the studio version always gives me goosebumps.
Serj published a duet with his father Khatchadour Tankian where they sing the traditional Armenian Bari Arakeel together. It's on youtube, go check it out! So much emotion in the faces and the voices - it's a joy to watch and listen to. Great harmonies.
@16:39 Serj and Daron voice goes so well together, they do a lot more of harmonies on the Hypnotize/Mesmerize double album. "Soldier Side (long version)" is another great song with both of them singing together. Thank you for the great content Elizabeth!
ive watched a lot of TH-cam videos in the last 20 years, but truly believe you are the most genuine creator ive ever enjoyed watching. please stay you.
I suggested Streamline before, so definitely agree there! Innervision is great too, but I feel Streamline has more emotion from Serj. Mr. Jack is also awesome. So many good songs on that album!
Elizabeth, the rest of their Rock in Rio performance is so amazing. You can clearly see how much this band loves what they do. Serg is one of the happiest performers I have ever seen. His face SHINES and it's a joy to watch.
John is a legendary drummer, I love how she points out small details that I have missed over the years. Definitely gives me an even greater appreciation of SOAD. The put your hands in the air and wave em like you don’t care has been in a ton of raps songs I think the original is from the roof is on fire.
Elizabeth, wow, what can I say other than that I genuinely LOVE your analysis of SOAD. All of them. SOAD has a special place in my heart. I grew up performing in choir and followed it all the way through college. I was never more musically inclined than that, I can read sheet music but really cant tell you much of anything else haha. In my more rebellious teenage years I stared branching out to various genres of music, and the first time I heard SOAD I knew there was something special. Dare I say I fell in love with their music, but I never could explain why a guy into choral music loved the likes of SOAD. About the best I could say was that their heavier music spoke to my teenage soul, but their ability to mix it with incredible harmony spoke to my passion for music. Anyway, Thank you!!! Love the analysis of one of my favorite bands in a way that I never could explain when I was younger. Please do more!!!! Looking forward to Toxicity, although mesmerize was always my favorite album which you just covered lost in Hollywood here.
SOAD is an amazing band and Serj's solo work is worth a listen too. I love deeply felt delivery of powerful lyrics, there is nothing better! Someday check out Serj's Harikiri with the video, it's super impactful.
I love watching your videos and your journey with their music. I went through this recently because my boyfriend and I would have conversations and they would lead back to SOAD lyrics (his favorite band), so I gave them another listen. I always liked their music, but I guess I never truly listened, but THIS time I did and haven't been able to stop. I absolutely love them. I love your breakdowns of the intricacies as well.
SOAD - unapologetically genuine and unique. One of the diminishing number of bands that I truly believe are uncompromising in putting exactly what they intend on their records. They're a great inspiration for how something that's truly yours can still be admired, even if it's often just so, so weird.
Love to hear that you're doing an analysis of the whole Toxicity album, it's such a phenomenonal one. You can definitely see some of their Armenian folks influences throughout it. Iirc, there's a track after Aerials called Arto (used to be the same track tagged on the end), where the really lean into and explore it. SOAD has been one of my favorite and most influential bands through my life. I really appreciate you analyses, which have helped me more deeply understand what it is I'm actually hearing, as I explore my own musical journey. Thanks so much for what you do 😁
I've always been obsessed with Daron's voice, since I began singing actually as Toxicity was my first album purchase and I would try to copy Serj (guess how that went) so I sang with Daron but IT DIDN'T FEEL RIGHT! I needed to just hear Him- he is so authentic, as you said. Being quick to idolise the top 20 often does have the cliche of all artists' voices sounding the same does exist for a reason, but there are singers who always scramble in there, and then blast you with nothing but themselves on full display and it's always so powerful. I've felt it with Freddie, Bowie, Cobain, (all of which are vastly separated in their own individual raw technical skill, personally bowie doesn't hit top 100 for personally YET he's my favourite vocalist and writer of all time.) Both Serj and Daron are polar opposites in their technical prowess, and they also clearly don't even care for a conversation on that topic, because true, genuine authenticity within art is something special and hard to find and it'd be impossible for them to not know how well they all synergise with one-another. Loved hearing you articulate the importance of being yourself musically/vocally. Really big infodump to understand, accept, and then embrace, so It's awesome to see you tell us viewers point-blank.
I've heard it said that the song "Green River - Come On Down (1985)" is widely regarded as one of the first songs to embody the grunge sound blending punk rock's raw energy with heavy metal's intensity. Green River, which included future members of Pearl Jam and Mudhoney, played a crucial role in shaping the early grunge scene in Seattle. I love these analysis videos. Thanks so much for making them.
i would LOVE if you delved into more of the deep cuts. there are so many songs that tend to get overlooked. my absolute FAVORITE of their songs is Dreaming. it's soooo good!
Rock Master Scott And The Dynamic Three - The Roof Is on Fire (B-Side on Request Line 1984) 30 seconds into the track th-cam.com/video/-Vv_LwwwpmU/w-d-xo.html
You should analyse their two songs "Genocidal Humanoidz" and "Protect the Land." SOAD released those songs to raise funds for rebuilding infrastructure and help civilians displaced by Azerbaijan's invasion.
I just searched, and I'm surprised that you never did an analysis on "she's like heroin." It's not the most comfortable song, but the way the vocals and overall rhythm start from carelessly chaotic then regress and spiral down into hopelessness and desperation brilliantly weaves the intense emotion into the artwork's expression. I'd love to hear your take on it.
"-hands in the air like you don't care" is a pop music trope, like rhyming "maybe" and "baby" it's fairly ubiquitous and tends to be associated with vapid crowd-pleasing songs, although it's used so widely it also crops up in some otherwise great music as well. As you'd expect from the context, it's being deployed ironically here.
You really should do this whole show - SOAD Rock in Rio 2015. But if I have to choose start with Cigaro, Darts, Needles, Know, and every other song on this live 🤣🤘🏼🥰
Please do Bon Iver or Julien baker. Both are some of the few artists who can make me cry easily. For bon iver, I would recommend his blogotheque take away shows, particularly the one where they’re in a cramped candlelit room. Very beautiful
Lost in Hollywood is my favorite song from the band. I've lived in Hollywood my entire life and the people are beautiful, broken, and have an enduring spirit. LA is not what you see on TV. It is so much more to it and full of such a rich history. Spend some time hear and you may not want to leave.
Finally! Thank you, Elizabeth! I have waited months for another SOAD analysis! They are one of my favorits! Their music helped me through the dark times in high school when I suffered panic attacks day by day. Glad that you love them as much as I do. All the best from Hungary! :)
I can't wait for the full Toxicity album analysis. I know it's a lot to ask, but if you want to ear the harmony between their two voices, you should definetly listen the double album Mesmerize/Hypnotize too. Lost in Hollywood is on this double album. To me, it's their masterpiece. And the fact that it's their last album too makes it even more precious.
I've never seen this live set before - and I LOVED the statement made by a specific line that was altered from the studio release, which originally was "They take you / And make you" (Obviously "make" is not what was said in this performance, and it's incredibly powerful)
SOAD is my favorite band of all time. Love their compostions and lyrical content. Even the goofy songs are great, lol. Need you to check out more of my new second favorite band now, Sleep Token. I'm not sure if you have checked out Ascensionism yet, but its off their (as you know) incredible Take Me Back to Eden album.
This is my goto channel on TH-cam now. Look forward to every episode. Considering all the deep dives into harsh vocals, Sepultura as one of the earlier pioneers might be a good shout. Chaos AD, in particular Refuse Resist was my way into harsh vocals when I was a lad.
SOAD is a band I grew up listening to with my grandma and mom, of course didn’t fully understand the themes in the music for a long time. It feels like a privilege nowadays to have learned of their music so early in life.
My all time fav S.O.A.D Song, EVER! As always, glad to see your 1st listen reaction to a less known audio gem, being spot on! This is an excellent live rendition, but the lp recording is the best version
I discovered your channel back in the spring with your Coheed and Cambria analysis. From there I got to see your exploration of the metal genere and it has been awesome to watch your appreciation for the genere grow. I especially look forward to seeing future analysis of SOAD (and some more Coheed if you can fit into your schedule)!
@TheCharismaticVoice Everytime I listen to this version, when Serj comes through after the build up form the drums. The overtones part always gets my hair on my neck raising up. Ive listened to this performance, countless times and it happens everytime. On a side note, SOAD Holy Mountain live in Armenia is just pure gold for System of a Down
Love the SOAD analysis, i can also reccomend avenged sevenfold live at LBC with mainly "scream" and "critical acclaim" with the rev singing while playing drums. Love it!
I love your analyses of every SOAD songs so far !!! You’re my most interesting reaction and I love how excited you are every time! I hope you’ll hear Radio/ Video, one of my favorite song of SOAD (even though it’s hard to choose a favorite haha) (sorry for my broken English but love you anyway !!)
I really love to hear you singing out some of the cool parts. It helps us to really hear them. I’d also love more small demos as we know your voice, it’s easier to hear the effect of the technique. Also, I guess I’ll have to support the kickstarter to hear toxicity analyzed ❤
I love these soad analysis, specially in the way the songs hit you, and i'd really like to watch analysis from the craziest songs, like Suggestions or Violent pornography
SOAD is unique. No matter what you think or listen to. I always learn that: Music is moment. That's it. To me SOAD, specifically this song have a HUGE impact on my life. Thank you SOAD for making my life better

YES! And specifically from the live show they did in Armenia in 2015 for the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide! Such an incredible show!
This is my favorite song by them, easily.
SOAD- Soldier Side (including the introduction) has a really great melody.
that was the song that made me realize that they can give a real emotional kick and made me just go to tears.
no band has done quite a melody so supporting of their depressing and horrifying lyrics.
I was going to suggest this one too
The whole of Mezmerize album tbf 👏♥️
soldier side is definitely a must. one of those songs you'll always get goosebumps 😊
Shavo's face full of tears at 26:08! 🥺 I've never watched this live version, but the vocal arrangements of the studio version always gives me goosebumps.
Every live performance of this song Shavo is brought to tears… really makes you wonder what LA did to the poor man.
totally get you. Its yet more depressing with the crisp studio version
The whole album? Man, the Prison song is gonna blow her mind off right from the start and I can't wait to watch
Prison Song and Deer Dance are going to hit her hard I'm guessing
Jet Pilot is so subtly sad as well.
Too bad it's locked behind a paywall....

Toxicity, Mesmerize and Hypnotize are all fantastic albums through and through
Hi Elizabeth, you should do ‘Radio/Video’ for the next SOAD song 😊
Yes! I wholeheartedly support that suggestion. It's one of my favorite SOAD songs and it's extremely interesting vocally!
I’ve suggested the same in the past, so I’m here to back up your request this time. Would love to hear an analysis of this one
Absolutely agree.
I support this action😊. Also it's very fun from a vocal view. Plus plenty of Darron

I can't believe more people aren't requesting Radio/Video. The lyrics and the way they are sang on that song are something I can't describe.
