  • In this video I replace the alternator on my Range Rover L322 TD6. This involves removal of the viscous cooling fan and radiator shroud.
    I take a huge gamble and buy a cheap Range Rover L322. Will it end in disaster, or will my cheap farm truck pay off. Will it live up to the title of Best 4x4xFAR??

    Your last comments really peaked my interest, removing the fan, improve economy? And really no high temp running? I have no tow bar and carry little, Road use and mainly cruising 120kph max, any additional info/thoughts welcome, I won’t hold you to it 😂 keep up the good work 👍🏻

    • @davesworkshop2714
      @davesworkshop2714  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had it out on Sunday and the temperature readings seemed a bit erratic. Normally it goes up to mid way linerally and stays there. For some reason it was up and down. When I got home I thought the rad felt very warm so I refitted it yesterday. As I said though, there's a lot of debate online about it. I didnt notice any decrease in noise. Having said all that the fan rarely locks up completely, and its very obvious when it does as it really roars 😅. In theory it should help economy, but I think having a good working thermostat that allows a quick warm up to mid way on the guage is more important. So I have no real answer for you 🙄. Thanks for watching though 🙂👍

      Ironically my charge light is back on, and I have a bad battery drain, but still charging. Going to take a look at it this evrning but looks like I'll be repeating the process! Think there's a failed diode. Good luck with it! Another viewer did it without removing the fan, I think the link is in the comments, worth a look. Its not a bad job, just take your time with it. Good video, I just did My L322, but left fan on .
    A couple of points, the alternator bolts are 16mm not 15mm and the long one goes to bottom not top. Also you got the tensioner wrong way round, it's anticlockwise to release tension, but still helpful video thanks!

    The light comes on fully sometimes on a run, when left overnight it goes out next start up . i could strip it out but we live quite remote & i dont think there is anyone up here who could check it . Nearest big town is inverness 130 mile away , so i think the only thing i could do is replace it & see what happens !!!!

    • @davesworkshop2714
      @davesworkshop2714  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm wondering if its a wiring problem? Check the low current connection is clean and properly fitted for starters. Have you confirmed its charging while the light is actually on? If the brushes are worn they could be hanging up time to time.

    So to remove alternator belt which size socket ? And do you just push it clockwise to take tension off belt or do you have to fully loosing it ? Thanks

    Thats not what i wanted to hear, mine shows 14.1 v even when red light comes on, makes me nervous of straying too far from home incase it konks altogether, I dont want to swap it out & see red light still on , I suppose nothing is easy thats why people are frightened of these cars !!!!!!

    • @davesworkshop2714
      @davesworkshop2714  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it glowing or on fully? A failed individual diode can just make it glow. If its not your main car you could always take it off and have it tested. Im pretty convinced mine has a dodgy diode. Going to test tomorrow. Ill try and put a video together on it to see if it is of any help to you 👍
