Basically there are two mistakes in this run. In the next to last room in 7-1, I had a little "trouble" with the ladders; this is one of maybe 5 parts in the last two worlds that gave me consistent trouble during practice. I estimate that a ghastly 3 or 4 seconds were lost there. In the final room in 7-2, I was a little late throwing the 5th vegetable, which resulted in brief slowdown. Maybe 1/3 of a second was lost. I didn't use any glitches, which cost me 4 seconds in 1-1. If I do another SMB2 run, that will probably be fixed. Source: speeddemosarchive.com/Mario2.html

Took me a while to beat the game. I remember leaving my Nintendo on all night so I could show my friends that I beat it, because no one believed I was on the last stage in school.

The movie came out in 1993, Super Mario Land came out in 1989. Also the movie was a piece of shit. Daisy was the princess in Super Mario Land, that's the first time she ever appeared. The ending shows that. Also the instruction booklet for the game mentions that Mario Land takes place far away from the Mushroom Kingdom, in Sarasaland. And the final bad guy is not Bowser/Koopa but a guy called Tatanga. Basically the only thing in common between Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Land is that Mario is in it.

Well, we all back in the day learned it by going underneath. I know this game all over the place, and do this in 7-2 all over the place, and I never thought to do it here either.
Bruh I remember when I was little playing this thinking the first level was like one third of the whole game and beating that pink dinosaur was a huge accomplishment
I only knew of maybe one secret or short cut. Most of the time I remember I had a lot of fun digging in the sand and pulling up every thing I could find. I would be the slowest player.

That's basically me for almost every game lol. I don't give a damn about speed, I just love exploring. With that said though sI love watching speed-runners and have mad respect some of the superhumans that attempt these.

As long as they're pulled straight up, yes. Not too far up the street from me, little ole' Ms. Cagle was digging up sweet potatoes to make her famous pies. The last one she yanked up and to the side turned out to be a rocket. It plowed through eleven homes, two churches, and a strip mall before finally exploding at the base of the county fair's largest ferris wheel. I hope a mere 116 deaths doesn't keep Ms. Cagle from baking her pies. They're great!

@@nhlnms it's tool-assisted speedrun, meaning humans don't need to participate at all and the computer will find the best way to play the game. It's what I heard
@@henrynguyen9182 That sounds a bit more advanced, it can also just be having an emulator or some external hardware automatically make controller inputs according to a preprogrammed sequence, and since with an emulator or comparable hardware, you have full access to the game state (even RNG), and since a machine can make the inputs frame-perfect and/or do inputs you can't physically do on a controller, it's a good way to find out how low you can physically go with the time if you could do a perfect run with optimal inputs. Most of the time there is in fact a human at least supervising the process and who has the game state advance frame by frame while programming the inputs (you can also backtrack and edit any inputs you previously programmed if there is any room for optimization). TAS have their own merits, but of course runs done in real time in a single segment by humans are definitely more impressive, especially if they get really close to TAS times
I also heard TAS slows down a game so you can beat it no-hit / speedrun.

+Adam Howell It's because this game was just another game with Mario characters slapped onto it. Everything in this game - enemies, music, etc - wasn't made by the Mario team, except for the main characters.
To think, we never would have had Shy Guy or Birdo if this game didn't require Nintendo characters to sell it.

Xpl1k3R890 that's because the real mario 2 was not released outside of Japan until super Mario all Stars was released on nes. super Mario lost levels was originally super Mario 2 but Japan didn't release it out of country due to at the time absurd difficulty as well as it was very similar to the first.
the super Mario 2 we got was a reskinned game originally called dokidoki panic.
This wasn't originally a Mario game at all, that's why. This was originally a game called Doki Doki Panic, and featured an Arabian family as the main characters. The actual, original Super Mario Bros. 2 was in the style of the original, but much, much harder. Nintendo figured that it would be too difficult for Western gamers, and decided to release DDP to the West instead, replacing the Arabian family with Mario Bros. characters.
Nintendo would later release the original Super Mario Bros. 2 as The Lost Levels (albeit with updated graphics), bundled in Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES.

When I was a kid I had it down to about 12 minutes with peach the whole way. My motivation? I just loved the ending music while Mario sleeps so much I wanted to listen to it as I lay in bed. So every night I could, I would seek the Nintendo on and best the game as fast as I could, in order to reduce my chances of getting caught, just to hear that end theme.
Watchin' this video made me realise: out of the whole Mario catalogue, this is the only game I've ne'er beaten or even seen beaten. Well done, mate!

This game was so unique and cool, and the music was legendary, some of the best in the series.
I think it is a TAS. It's impossible to not fail even once in all the stuffs thus guy is doing. He clearly saves and reloads from the emulator until getting it proper right. Then it's only a work of video editing.
One of my favorite NES games as a kid though it was pretty hard to beat. Never imagined that someone could do it in about 8 minutes. Hats off to you.

I know everything about the doki doki panic and the smb2 too hard for america, but still when I first played smb2 I literally panicked so hard when I just started falling, even knowing it wasnt a typical mario game. I do like that Idea of falling asleep tho c:

my friends played this game every day and didnt know how to get past the first birdo, then I figured it out the first time I tried. Then we spent 30 minutes finding out we were supposed to go into the bird mouth. then we died.

That was the beginning of the time where I stopped reading instruction manuals, as the manual clearly showed how to beat Birdo.

@@CWG500SUBSWBC Because a) everything you would want to know is online and b) the games have a lot more in game tutorials now. A lot of modern games start with 30 minutes or more of basically explaining what to do. These games, they just throw your character into the level and you figure it out
Speedruns are so fascinating. I enjoy watching the creative tricks people use to get through levels faster and this one had a lot of them that I'd never have thought of.

This "joker" has dedicated hours upon hours and even years to perfect this stuff. He didn't wake up bored one day and decide to speed run. He prepared himself with years gameplay and master planning 1st.
Enjoy how these guys beat these classics in a handful of minutes. They have already spent many lifetimes perfecting it, after all!

I call it "False Speedrun". Using warps to bypass chunks of the game is, in itself, a form of cheating. It was still pretty fast, though. I'd like to see him play through the entire game, without warps. That would be a true speedrun

+pustulio81 They didn't glitch the game, its all within the boundaries of the games rules. How is it cheating to use the mechanics present within the game? That's like saying using your sword to defeat enemies in Zelda is cheating. Obviously you should only use deku sticks and your boomerang, because that would be the most difficult way to defeat the game. It's a different category of speed run, this would be considered an any% speed run where you are allowed to skip parts of the game through warps or any other means. If you don't like it that's fine but that's why they have 100% categories, for people who like to see every part of the game played. Also before you put down other peoples efforts, you could not pull off 9 minutes with or without warps. It's impressive either way.

that is because it is a pallet swap of another game.
***** Actually more accurately the other game is a sprite swap of this. As it was always originally intended to be a mario game. It was changed when another company lent the use of their IP to nintendo and head office changed it to tie in with that while they could.
***** The liscence however was only valid in japan, so the original art was reintegrated and the game returned to its original state upon american release.

With the exception of mario64, still my favorite. Distinct among the franchise as an "off model" game with unusual enemies, (and ways to kill them), no bowser, and the only mario game (outside of mario rpg and the party/kart games) that gives you a choice of four characters.
Plus, what a great "game win" payoff vs. SMB's profound 8-bit let-down of an "Oh, hey man, thanks. Yeah, all those castles and this is what you get. What? You want more? Well here, have seconds.. with beetles."
You can play as 4 or more characters in New Super Mario bros. Wii and New Super Mario bros. U deluxe. And Super Mario 3D World.
This represents about a tenth of my entire childhood :D

When I was a kid this was the one game I was better at than all of my friends. I got to where I could beat it in 22 minutes. I'm still proud of that. But after seeing this, I'm slightly less proud. Amazing job.

This was the only Super Mario Bros. game I beat as a kid, except for Super Mario World. Those were also my two favorites!

I dont remember playing this when I was a kid. Love all the classic mario games.
You could tell it was recorded on VHS because of some of the lines and fuzziness. This was probably a world record run for its time when it was recorded. Though there are a few (but very, very few) times where there was a mis-timed jump, including the clouds and ladders area in world 6, where it could have been a tad bit faster. But I'm not complaining at all. I know I can't do speed runs for any game, so I would never judge anyone's skills in doing it. I'm only quoting my army NCOIC, Sergeant Powell (E7 Sergeant First Class), "Meh. There's still room for improvement, you doggone knucklehead!" He was such a cheery guy. Sarcasm... It helps! Excellent video! It would be nice if this still holds a world record time, or at least in the world's top 10 fastest.

What I learned from this game is that Mario and his friends don't give the smallest fuck how dangerous an enemy is. They just pick it up like nothing...

Easily the trippiest Mario Bros game still to this day. Never got to beat it because my brother and I rented it from the local video rental store. Nice to be able to see the ending and the levels we never reached.
