I persuaded my girlfriend to purchase one and she loves it. Compared to the CRV and Forrester, the Tiguan has the most premium feel of the 3 and superior ride/handling. This car is intelligent and the 9" touchscreen is super impressive. I just wish the U.S. model had the Euro spec'ed tail lights.

We got loads and loads of LWB Tiguans in at our dealership near Atlanta. I noticed a few manufacturing defects on the early production models. However, VW rep that visits us takes notes and sends reports straight to the factory in Puebla. VW invested $1 Billion dollars into the expansion to produce the Tiguan LWB there, and the fit and finish is great for it being the first stack of cars made there. They are very fast at addressing any issues. The Puebla plant is the 2nd biggest VW plant after Wolfsburg.

I have to say the HUD though basic, works very well at keeping your eyes on the road. 36:59 the US cars get a torque converter gearbox I think. 47:27 and 1:06:17 you're guessing the fuel consumption! My experience testing a European SWB 150 TDI AWD DSG for a few days, gave 5.7 l/100km. Petrols use more fuel! And our test car was ok for my back, and was very refined & quiet at speed. 56:53 poor throttle response? No wonder, it's a petrol engine at 1,800 rpm, and was possibly in 7th gear! Many thanks for your review Aditya.

Interesting review; thank you AJ. Fuel consumption appears to be a real issue with recent VW. A friend has been driving a Golf 1.2 for some time and is particularly disappointed to have 8/100 in normal driving conditions. Is this fallout from the Dieselgate????

I was in the dealership in France today to check the Tiguan Allspace and checked whether there is a gap as shown at 16:10. The gap was very tiny, probably aboout half milimeter at maximum and it was not constant around the perimeter of the unit if I looked very closely - it simply looked like the unit was not placed in precisely. I went to check the normal normal Tiguan that was standing nearby and found exactly same "defect" so it looks like the built quality is same. I don't find it as a problem since it is almost not noticeable and I guess it might be able to get it realigned in a garage if someone doesn't like it.
I also tried pushing the dashboards on both Tiguans and found the sqeaking in a same way, so again found the standard very similar - it wasn't too bad in my opinion. I am hoping to get arranged a test drive soon so will see if I hear anything while on the move, which is more important...

In the U.S. for this new Tiguan, we get the third row as standard on FWD trims, and the third row is optional on AWD trims. I think that the LWB Tiguan we get in the states, is still going to be too big for some people here, and I wish they offered the normal wheelbase. As A.J. pointed out we still can buy the old Tiguan, but I don't know how many people will go for that option.

VW needs a car like this for the global market but I would go for the Skoda Karoq Sportsline in Germany. Nevertheless the Tiguan Allspace or LWB is a very attractive model for the USA and China. Oversee it will find a lot of costumers. 👍

Another quality review, nice one AJ. Hate to be pedantic here but these touch screen displays just get so many finger prints, they look terrible! I'm not an inventor but surely it must be possible to make a touch screen with an actual 'textured' screen to avoid all the fingerprints!

It is possible - I have the new Honda CR-V, and it's touchscreen has a coating on it which means it's not super glossy glass (better in sunlight too) so it doesn't completely prevent fingerprints, but definitely an improvement on other touch screens.

I wonder if AJ has driven the normal Tiguan, because it sounds to me, that he didn't. It would be better for comparing. It would also be nice to get a normal tiguan, a skoda kodiaq and a tiguan allspace to do a big comparing review.
And the reason why people would buy the alspace over the normal tiguan, is the trunk space. AJ wonders if you need the lwb, if it's not a 7-seater, because he thinks that people are not going to use the more trunkspace. He forgets to mention that the normal tiguan has a really small trunk. The allspace has all the space you need for a vacation trip to (for example) austria.

    @johnchinn8922 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey AJ, really like your review on the Tiguan Allspace as well as your style of presentation; Thomas also! But first can I make an observation, so many test drives on this class of vehicle are done where your comments are based on a typical family car, or the Mum's football run car etc.. and not considering any other typical user??
I believe that I am also a typical business driver, I am based in Italy right now, I drive many miles each year visiting important customers wher I can be in the car for 4-5 hours on a round trip ot 8 to 12 hours on a round trip, greater than that we would stop for a night.
Most of the time I will have a colleague with me, 40% to 50% of my journeys I will have senior managers from the US with me also, meaning another 2-3 guys so 5 in total. I am 188cm tall two of my US colleagues are 191cm and 193cm.
My company even at CEO level does not push out to Mercedes GLE/GLS, Audi Q7/Q8 executive class cars.
What cars would you compare that would comfortably carry 5 largish guys on business, on motorwats and mountian roads but still give performance when needed but not feel like your in a bus?
Oh and give me a break, it wants to look cool be fun to drive when i'm alone and and have a handful of features that will include a pano roof, great sound system, comfort and sports modes at least.
If you can help me here then you will have another group of business men who will switch on to you and subscribe!
Thanks at least for reading this and if you give me feedback! Amazing!!!!

  • @CZWhitek

I was waiting for the Tiguan Allspace release in expectation for better and more advanced alternative compare to Skoda Kodiaq, but after checking it on the Frankfurt car show last September and this review I am rather disapointed...especially by the 3rd row being a complete FAIL by VW. Why have the VW engineers screwed it up so bad when cheaper and smaller VW Touran has been such success?
The build quality doesn't seem to meet the german standard too. Would be good to compare the squeeking with short Tiguan, which I think is pretty good.
I was testing the standard audio in the short Tiguan the other day and found the experience at the 2nd row very annoying even when trying to tune the audio setting (1st row experience was OK though)....probably not something that people usually test, but they should if they plan to have people in the back :-) Maybe the Dynaudio performs better on the rear seats.
In the meantime this is my personal observations when comparing Skoda Kodiaq vs VW Tiguan Allspace
    Kodiaq benefits
    - At least 5 000-6 000 EUR cheaper with comparable set of equipment (comparing Style vs Highline with same key equipment), even more cheaper when going for panoramic roof, biger wheels, DCC, towing bar.
    - More headroom in the 3rd row, so can fit taller people (I am 187cm and can sit there without having to lower my head as much as in the Tiguan Allspace)
    - Simply clever perks (umbrelas, door edge protectors, headrests for sleeping at 2nd row, lot of storage/cubbies, and quite a few more little details that Tiguan doesn’t have)
    - Manufactured in EU (not aware of any squeeking in dashboard etc)
    - Option to have memory seats without need to go for animal skin seats which are in case of Tiguan also pretty expensive (the car is going to be used 50-50 by me and my wife so really value this option)
    Tiguan Allspace benefits
    - Digital instruments with full navigation - in my view quite practical advantage
    - Front LED lights with "Dynamic Light Assist" (Kodiaq has currently only "Light Assist")
    - Option to have Head-up display (quite rubish quality in my view so not worthwhile)
    - Option to have Progressive Steering (not sure if worthwhile compare to normal steering)
    - Option to have Side Assist Plus
    - I am expecting slightly better sound insulation….but haven’t had a chance to compare it against Kodiaq
    - A bit nicer car in terms of exterior and dashboard...but this is subjective of course
    - Option to go for 240ps diesel
Overall the only practical advantage of Tiguan Allspace is the digital instruments and LED Dynamic Light assist. If one doesn't mind the subjective design differences then the Kodiaq is much more reasonable choice in my opinion.
In terms of the engines, and I guess it may be similar for both Kodiaq and Tiguan, I came across to some reviews critisising the 190ps TDI for its relative weakness. One reviewer mentioned that when compared the 150ps TDI with the 190ps TDI one cannot really feel the difference until very high rpm are reached. So for practical driving the 190ps may be not worth the money as most people would drive the diesel at lower rpm. On this note, having tested the short Tiguan 2.0 TDI with 240ps I have to say that I was very impressed....so maybe a plus points for Tiguan as one can go for this strong engine that Kodiaq doesn't currently offer
I am looking forward to your practical comparision review Autogefühl which you are famous for ;-)

    • @CZWhitek
      @CZWhitek 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Having just checked the 3rd row of seats in Allspace today - I am 189 cm tall and having difficulty to sit straight due to low ceiling. My wife is 167 cm and can sit straight with about 1-2 cm free space above her head.
In terms of leg room. My wife was sitting relatively comfortable, not touching the 2nd row backrest, although having the legs quite folded due to high floor. The second row as well as first row was adjusted for myself - very comfortably behind the steering wheel and just enough at 2nd row nearly touching the folded plastic tables. The middle seat was not comfortable for me, but would be OK for my wife......so the conclusion is that Allspace can carry upt to 4 people being 189cm and 3 people being 167cm.
I think that my wife would be OK to sit in the 3rd row for about 1 hour withou big problem....but longer trips might be quite uncomfortable.
Overall I find Kodiaq more spacious. There are also bigger windows at the 3rd seats which is more handy for kids.

Great review! I have been comparing these models, along with the Peugeot 5008,and new Hyundai Santa Fe 2019.
I totally agree with you. I feel like VW rushed the development of the Allspace. It doesn't feel like they thought of everything with the back seats and the boot. For example, the boot has two large holes on the side between the bumper and wheel arches (around the area where you hide the parcel shelf). Why are these holes not covered? Now small items and dirt will fall down there.
It feels like VW just wanted to be able to tick a box to say they had a medium sized 7 seater and didn't really care whether the seats were usable for average sized people.
Peugeot 5008 is more practical for carrying people. and Hyundai Santa Fe is amazing!! Only problem is that it doesn't have the active info display. If it did, it is easily the best in class, I think.

Being LWB is important for the family that has finally stopped growing. Nothing worse than no foot room especially in the back row when driving LONG DISTANCES AS WE DO IN AUSTRALIA. I do not want to buy the Tourang as 4 cyliinder is enough these days with Twin turbo intercooled diesels. I hate "vans", perhaps I have no choice.

Tiguan Allspace in Germany is 65,000€ fully loaded ... Tiguan Premium SEL 4Motion in the US is 27,000€ + shipping + MWSt + Zoll + port fees ... brings it up to 39.000€.

-no rear seat door trim with leatherette inlays
-2nd row climate control not offered (available on Atlas, also comes with heated 2nd row seats)
-no tables on first row seats for rear passengers
    -head up display not offered
-Park Assist not offered (available on Atlas)
    -Discover Pro not offered
    -Basic LED taillights

It’s unacceptable in a car this size designed for families not to have 3 full size seats in the rear row. The ford smax achieves this perfectly and has done for many years now so it can be done. If you have 3 young children needing car seats then this simply does not work unless you are happy to have one of them sit in the optional 3rd row which is less safe and then also reduces your boot space. I can’t understand why so many manufacturers don’t think of this on so called family friendly cars

This is not the same as the Tiguan that is sold in the US. Can you do a review of the US Tiguan? We will not get many of the features here and the 4 motion SEL Premium does not come with HUD, 3rd row seats, no trays, and only comes in leather seats. I don't agree with the reviewer about the drabness and drone of the vehicle. This was a negative review whereas, it's great to drive.

Rattles come as standard with recent VW’s. I’ve owned a new VW every 2/3yrs since late 1970’s. Never used to get rattles up to about 2010. Depends where the model is built too. Some countries are worse than others.

Thank you for taking interest in this very important topic!
We have researched this issue for many years now so please take your time to go through our extensive resources stated below as they answer every single question we have yet received concerning this matter.
At Autogefühl, we have already received several thousands (!) comments, messages and mails that more and more people want to combine enjoying their car with reducing the environmental impact at the same time. We believe that sustainable luxury is possible or at least we should do everything to support that. Those many thousand people confirming this trend, motivate us to give you the most authentic information and background on the product parts. It is not about what you bought in the past, and it is not about blaming anyone, it is about what you decide in the future and what you can decide and influence as a customer. So we want you to have all information that you need for a decision you later enjoy and like best yourself.
In Summer 2017, Tesla motors has decided to be the first manufacturer to go all the way with sustainable seat materials, only offering fabric/cloth seats or leatherette seats in different colours. They have banned all real leather from the seating surface and at the steering wheel in the white trim or on demand. So Tesla shows where the industry will and must be heading, just like they went forward with electrification first.
Check out our special video addressing car CEOs as a first summary and also see conditions of animal skin production:
      th-cam.com/video/LNSUzZXzpdc/w-d-xo.html
List of practical reasons against animal skin seats:
      1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it)
      2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling
      3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating
      4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling
      5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa
      6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review th-cam.com/video/y2wNGFKa4M0/w-d-xo.html) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla
      7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather)
      To the environmental reasons:
      1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below)
      2. The factory farming industry can be accounted for at least 40 % of climate emissions and thus is (according to numerous sources you can look up) the number one reason for climate change and environmental destruction. It is the number one reason for deforestation, two thirds of all agricultural land on earth is used for growing animal food crops. If you would feed humans directly by using the agricultural land, you could produce much more food for everyone. See this interesting essay for more on climate emissions background: www.worldwatch.org/files/pdf/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf
      3. It is not only cows who are suffering, but also the environment and to a big part also humans. Think of slavery-like working conditions in slaughterhouses (there are plenty of documentaries about this) or think of chemically altered drinking water in animal skin production villages as also seen in the video footage.
      4. The discussion, for which body part the cow is killed first, is very patronizing. But if you really think it would be important why someone gets killed in first place: There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even while still being (part-)alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body.
      5. So even if a cow gets theoretically killed for meat first, in every case you give additional money to an industry that relies on killing, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". A the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover up that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy.
      6. To the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/
To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production”
      1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small.
      2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce. Even if you leave the ethical aspect aside, here is the official calculation of the CO2-Output animal skin vs leatherette (different kinds of leatherette):
      Leather 17 kg CO2/m²
      PVC leatherette 10 kg CO2/m²
Acella Eco natural leatherette 8,5 kg CO2/m²
Benova (PUR leatherette): 8 kg CO2/m²
So by using the latest high-tech leatherette, you even the CO2-emissions are cut in half!
      3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. That’s the future.
      More special video episodes:
      1. A initial special video from Autogefühl considering the use of leather can be found here: th-cam.com/video/8f91KgbVbJQ/w-d-xo.html
      2. And another one right here: th-cam.com/video/tMNgcLE0LDU/w-d-xo.html
      3. Furthermore, you’ll find the footage of leather production also here, where people are walking in chemicals etc. and animals have to watch their friends being slaughtered in front of their eyes: th-cam.com/video/JipYvuDsI6s/w-d-xo.html
      timecode starting 27:46
      4. This is another video which very well summarizes the torture of leather production, shots taken at big farms which directly produce for the automotive industry: th-cam.com/video/OgHs239bAnE/w-d-xo.html
      5. Please note that those videos are made by well-known journalists and cameramen who were not influenced by any animal welfare organisation, they supply their footage to the animal rights groups of course. I partly know the creators of the video footage personally and they are all authentic. You don’t have to search long to find cruel production environments anyway.
      Manufacturers reactions:
We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL. If it all would be clean and happening without harm, why don’t they show it to us whereas they are showing us every other detail of their products? They have good reason not to, because there is no such thing as a clean animal skin production without harming cows, humans and the environment. The only thing a manufacturer can do is increase their effort for a better future, and we are helping with in-depth talks and interviews by presenting the increasing customer demand for sustainable luxury. Tesla was the first one to react in a major way now.
So meanwhile, we more often also get feedback that a lot of manufacturers are working on leather-free interiors and are aware of the situation. E.g. Bentley, Mini and Kia have started vegan car interior programmes. Besides Tesla, Mercedes already shows major choices for sustainable interiors, you always have to pay attention to the details when ordering, of course - and we are happy to give advice. However, much has to be done still and the Autogefuehl community is massively helping in boosting the positive change!
Help to raise awareness on this subject. Thanks!

I think the euro spec version is slightly different than US spec. I believe these are the differences:
    US Spec does *not* have:
    - Park Assist (automated steering)
    - DSG
    - Diesel engine options
    - HUD
    - Paddle Shifters
    - DCC adjustment (?)
    - Gesture recognition??
    - Rear seat fold-up trays
    - Rear temperature adjustment
    The US Spec *adds*:
    - Physical volume and tuning knobs

+Autogefühl By all means give the viewer the information on the choice of materials that are being offered by the manufacturer (leather vs leatherette), but why interject your own personal social agenda views into it? You alienate many of your viewers by your subtle preaching of helping the animals as if those who like leather are cruel. For the many thousands of comments and messages you receive, just remember there are just as many on the other side who don’t get their panties in a twist about such issues. Be smart and mind your own backyard and just give the facts. For the record, I like either material as long as it’s not liking sitting on a slab of concrete.

My wife's £44k 2017 Tiguan 190ps 4 Motion R-Line has a horrendous metallic grating noise emanating from the drive train, which has been evident from new.
After lengthy investigations lasting several weeks both VW and the selling dealer have described the aforementioned ‘noise’ a ‘characteristic’ and ‘normal DSG operation noise’ However are refusing to declare why the noise is evident on some cars but not others and also which component the noise is emanating from!......something to hide?..... seriously not Volkswagen surely?!!!
I have during the past 8 years spent in excess of £250,00 on VAG products so you could guess that I am a valuable customer?....LOYALTY counts for NOTHING with VW!....when they have your money they are simply not interested!!
Unfortunately and due to VW’s reluctance to resolve my wife’s concerns with her Tiguan I have been left with no alternative but to appoint a independent DEKRA automotive engineer who has contrary to VW and the selling dealers opinion of the noise being ‘normal operation’ and a ‘characteristic’ has concluded there is a terminal drivetrain defect!
I have test driven 4 Tiguan's for comparison purposes and out of 4, three exhibited varying degrees of noise so there is no consistency but apparently quite a few cars affected, some customers have contacted me from as far a field as Australia and Iceland!
I have uploaded a video to you tube so have a listen see if you think it is acceptable!.........th-cam.com/video/O96j_x9M3fk/w-d-xo.html

+666DW - sorry to hear of your grief. You're up against the person/dealer who sold you the 'product', not VW. You should reject the car. And get all your money back. If there is a fault, which your engineer says there is. I listened to your video, which was inconclusive, mainly due to the lack of video, only audio. Those 'sounds' couldn't be related to anything! Suggest record a better video? Good luck.

    • @666DW
      @666DW 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Kit Kat there is no need to record a visual video only sound.
My wife has formally rejected her Tiguan but the dealer will not accept rejection on the grounds that the noise is a ‘characteristic’ hence my appointment of the independent engineer in order to clarify the concerns with the DSG gearbox. Her case files are with the Motor Ombudsman at this present time being investigated.
With regards to you believing that the sound recording is inconclusive there lies the reason why many other Tiguan owners are not coming forward! You need to know what you are listening for which IMO is very obvious, but that assessment maybe due to my specialism in the automotive industry.
My wife recorded the noise from her iPhone during her drive into work one morning whilst in heavy traffic. And whilst I appreciate the device used to make the recording isn’t ideal it does clearly highlight the grating noise at various intervals throughout.
Listening to the sound recording on a desktop as opposed to a mobile device will provide a better listening environment and highlight the noise defect in greater detail.
