Under the Regan administration when the U.S. helped with the reunification of Germany, NATO agreed it would go no further east than Germany. That was during Gorbachev's and Regan's famous negotiations. Russia just wants NATO to honor it's commitment. I remember these events well.

I do not think this will do. Ceded territory is the thing already done. Referendums decided and will decide where sections of what used to be Ukraine will belong. Russia will not allow Nato on Ukraine territory so insistence on that will further determine Ukraine existence as independent country..
I was born in Saudi Arabia back in the early 50’s. I am an American but I can tell you that football/Soccer has a popular game in Arabia since I can remember.

We spent 20 years in Afghanistan and Iraq, constantly repairing and replacing bombed and destroyed equipment while still keeping bases here in the homeland operating without skipping a beat, and our economy didn't collapse. A year or two of supplying Ukraine with military assistance is not going to break the United States.
