It is a really cool sci-fi concept: biological organisms that can use greater, more advanced bio-organisms to traverse the expanse of space from world to world, fighting and consuming the life it finds to advance itself. It's why I love the Zerg, love the Tyranids, and in Starfinder, I love the Swarm. Because even at the core rulebook level, there's elements of the Swarm that broke off to be PC races.
Fun fact: Early in the development of StarCraft, it was supposed to be an a Warhammer 40K RTS game. Before it was rebranded into it’s own IP by blizzard.
As someone who’s completely addicted to Pathfinder/Starfinder lore I just want to thank you for these videos. What a joy! Almost no one is doing Path/Starfinder lore. Especially Starfinder.

A realization that the Swarm and Gnolls from 5e are kind of similar with the all encompassing hunger, the latter being the affect of Yeenoghu on the Gnolls. Another group I'd love to see tackled, as they're spread through the Alien Archives but unlike the Swarm don't have an AP dedicated to them yet, is The Dominion of the Black
@@TheMapleTable In 5e D&D they switched their lore, well this was in Volo's guide, so a few years back now, they had made the Gnolls essentially all part of the hunger of Yeenoghu. I don't recall if they've changed it with the more recent updates as they did with Orcs in 5e, since the release of Tasha's cauldron of everything, but if you have access to Volo's guide to monsters, that's where they go into the details and background of the Gnolls. Current incarnation if changed probably on the D&D wiki
I am about to start my first game I Starfinder. Only 2 players and we are playing the Aeon Throne story so I am confident but nervous at the same time.
Shirren are one of my favorite races from the core rule book. I do like the Swarms backstory and lore and their biotechnology but at the same time feel like their used as "the main bad guys" far too often and sometimes it feels a bit cliche but thats just my opinion.
@@BigBossTussBall the Flood, the Zerg, the Tyranids, the Swarm… there’s so many takes on this exact alien trope that whenever someone tries putting them against each other the answer always boils down to what you said here…
Tyranids would win. Swarm size is unknown but we can at least assume it is a decent size of the galaxy. Their psychic potential is very good, better than decent, and they have one of the better Hive Minds in sci-fi. The Zerg against them would probably give them a good run for their money, as enough "god" beings exist in both lores to add weight (PF/SF pantheons against the xel'naga/Kerrigan) but ultimately lose out due to size and reliance on Creep to live. Swarm would eat that and them in the end. Tyranids against them would make the Swarm non-existent. Anything the Swarm does, they can do on a production level not seen (yet) from the Swarm. Their ability to subvert a world before invasion is next level, beyond what I have seen the Swarm do (genestealers infiltration is damning). And even if you defeated the "Hive Fleet", congratulations, that was only ONE. There are two more enroute from different galactic directions (the third one is coming UP through the galactic disk, instead of the edge like the first two)
Creeps towards spoilers for the swarm module. So players be warned. Some of this could be stuff your DM wants to be explored through the adventure path. Still a good video not shit talking.
