    Thanks, Chef. Great video. I don't understand why anyone would give you a thumbs down! I have my own channel and like you, am simply trying to help people. I am not ASE certified, but have been turning wrenches on cars / trucks, bikes and boats for 36 years. Why oh why do these douche-canoes feel the need to be negative?! Keep up the great work and thank you for your time and effort!

    We bit the bullet and ordered a brand new lower unit assembly from Partsvu back in January. The one on my 2002 Yamaha 60TLRA was too far gone and I didn't trust it in the backwater anymore. Nice DIY video.

    Looks pretty simple. Do you need to have it in neutral or a gear to reinstall.

    • @andrewwhitman9746
      @andrewwhitman9746 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      what ever it is in on the gear shift. normally neutral.

    • @ChefOutdoors
      @ChefOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just make sure the lower unit is in the same position as the shifter. The engine and lower unit need to be in the same gear for reinstallation.

  • @survivinglife3505

    Is there a gasket that goes in between the lower unit and the motor

    • @ChefOutdoors
      @ChefOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No there is just an exhaust gasket inside the lower that is reusable, but no other gasket between them

    Great video! I subscribed.
    Question: is it easy to swap a 20 inch lower unit to a 25 inch without too much effort and pricey parts?
    My motor blew up in my 150 hp 25 inch lower unit but found another 150 hp with 20 inch. Can I swap 20 for 25?

  • @verticalrider1

    Great video, I have a question. I was full throttle in my 76 mercury mariner 60hp when I head a pop and lost 90% of thrust. I removed the bearing carrier thinking the pin in them dog clutch had sheared but it fine, in fact I inspected all gears etc... and I see nothing of concern it all looks great in the gear case. The engine performs as usual. Any thoughts of what could be the issue?

    • @ChefOutdoors
      @ChefOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you check the prop, maybe the hub spun in the prop? Not sure if that particular configuration

  • @jaflkdjsfkld
    @jaflkdjsfkld ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you need to make sure the shifter is in the same gear or neutral as the new lower? If so how would you go about doing that or is there only one way it lines up. It looks like just a spline so it could line up several different ways.

    • @ChefOutdoors
      @ChefOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they have to be in the same gear. It is just a spline so it can be installed in the wrong gear easily. You can use pliers to shift gears in the lower before installing it if you have to. Just be careful not to strip the spline

    On my yamaha 250 there is another hole under fin and in front of zinc that also had a 14 mm bolt. It was a little shorter than the 14 mm under zinc. I removed it but did I not have to remove that one?

    Do you put it on neutral when taking it off?

    • @ChefOutdoors
      @ChefOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but sometimes I like to put it in gear so I can spin the prop to help align the splines in the driveshaft. If it is in neutral you can spin the fly wheel to align the driveshaft splines

  • @tigerrecon
    @tigerrecon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What kind of grease are you putting on the drive shaft?

    • @ChefOutdoors
      @ChefOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure I specifically remember, but what I probably would of been using was a yamalube or quicksilver marine grease lubricant or equivalent. I usually have a few tubes lying around

    Just a question, I have a 2020 Yamaha 150 four stroke and the bolts holding the lower unit on are leaking oil. Thoughts?

    • @ChefOutdoors
      @ChefOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      what kind of oil? engine oil or gear lube? could be engine oil for the block running down, could be gear lube coming up from the gear case through the shift shaft or drive shaft seals, could be unburned fuel and carbon from a hole in the exhaust port running down to the bolts. lots of investigating to do.. let me know what you find

    I tried taking my lower unit off today it came off but something still seems to be holding it, it looks like I may need to loosen something on the rod that comes out when you take the whole lower unit out, I’m not sure I didn’t want to try to bang it out anymore and end up breaking something, I have a 1991 Yamaha outboard 2 stroke

    • @ChefOutdoors
      @ChefOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure to be honest. Yamaha's shift and drive shafts are always splined so they should slide off easy. make sure to look into it further. let me know what you find!
