Great video Capt.. If I would change anything it would be NOT to use grease inside the impeller cup. True it does allow the impeller to go on easier, BUT you are introducing it to the water ways of your motor as well. This causes a sticky film on the walls of the cooling areas and the thermostats and that allows the sand and salt to stay stuck to the greasy walls of the water ways in your motor.. The best thing to use is "LIQUID SOAP" inside the cup of the impeller to allow it to go on easy. Then the soap just washes away AFTER the impeller is on and the first 3 min. of running the motor... Just wanted to pass on some advice I was given years ago...

    • @OutOnTheReef

Yes Captain soap will be a better solution thank you so much for the advice whenever I do this again I'm going to use soap instead of Grease thank you and it really makes sense what you're saying👍👍😉

Thank you sir! I ordered the water pump kit for my 150HP Yamaha a few weeks ago. After removing the plastic housing I could not figure out how to remove the collar on the shaft. The existing impeller looked good so I applied grease to the necessary parts and reassembled without actually placing the new impeller. At the end of the season I'll try this again. Unfortunately when I was replacing the lower unit I broke the plastic speedometer pick up when trying to align. Also I believe my original issue was the short rubber hose where the water ejects from the engine housing was clogged with rust and gunk. Using a nail and thin blade screwdriver I cleaned out the short section of hose. All seems fine turning 5100 RPM on the motor. Thank you for posting I now know how to remove the collar from the shaft.

Captain, I liked your video. It was very helpful. Four things: 1. I would not put anti-seize on the threads of the anode bolt. The anode is specifically designed to allow an electrical current generated by dissimilar metals to flow to the zinc as a sacrificial metal. I would think that putting anything between the threads of the bolt and its contact with either the anode or the metal of the foot would impede that process. 2.. It might be helpful to just give an extra reminder about shaft rotation and to think of it as viewed from the top to make it perfectly clear. 3. When I did mine, I was surprised to find a lot of dried material in the holes in the foot that the bolts go through to get to the motor. I had to stop, clean out the trash and recoat the bolts before I could bolt up the foot. 4. Lastly, I found that it was very important to line up the gear shift linkage first when reseating the foot. The is a lot of play as to where that connection from the engine comes down and I found that there was a very small sweet spot wherein I could seat the gear shifting tube in place and then get the water tube in place. Seat the shifting linkage first. Really touchy. Would really help to have two people.

Regular DIY guy, nothing special maintenance, saving a lot of money. However, couple things done not exactly how it should be. First: wood roof key must be replaced with every impeller change, because in a couple of years very same wood roof key (never changed) will be bent. Hard to imagine, after all it is rubber against steel, but it will. And it will create some slack at rubber/key contact, that in turn will enlarge opening in a shaft. witch in turn will create more slack to the point that one day wood roof key will swipe around inside rubber impeller, making water pump loose torque.
Second: pressing down drive shaft collar need same time pull drive shaft UP, this creating some very needed slack at the bottom bearing. and this is very important and may help to avoid some problem with lower unit - marina mechanics know about it. Third: use spline grease on splines, all other greases do not withstand pressure of metal to metal.
Best recommendations are: use all parts from kit and read Yamaha repair manual. Good video next time try do not obstruct camera with hands.

Great video amigo. I just used it to change the water pump on my 200 Yamaha. Fortunately I also had advice available from Justin who services rental boat yamaha engines at my marina. A few things. On my motor the lower unit bolts or 14 MM. My trim tab bolt is 13 MM. Just so you know they may not be the same. I changed out my pump housing. If you do, make sure do you have the curved receiving piece and gasket installed in the water outlet tube on the new housing. Yamaha does not include that with a new housing, you have to asked for it. For a first timer it’s a trap. The tube won’t seal with the brass water tube in the upper engine housing. It happened to me, I took the lower unit off again, and Justin knew exactly what happened! We took the old one off the old housing and popped it in the new one. Problem solved, just a little extra work. Last thing. My 2016 Yamaha F 200 manual says to replace the impeller every 300 hours, not every 100. Unless used often in sandy or muddy water conditions. Most mechanics suggest every 100 for every condition. Why? As a cynic, I would say more business and money for them. But another reason may be for many engines 100 could take several years if not used much. The impeller is rubber and can dry out and get brittle. However I use my boat often and year-round in Florida. My change was the second at 600 hr. My old impeller looked fine.

Good video- other than the grease on the impeller cup (yes, soap is better) beware of the type of never seize you are using on the bolts as most types (even the grey never seize) contain copper. Copper reacts like acid with aluminum-those two dissimilar metals hate each other. If you can’t confirm the copper content in the never seize product you are using you are better off using EP-2 grease to achieve a similar result.

It's nice to see someone who doesn't take shortcuts. Removing the prop allows you to inspect for line wrapped behind the prop, which could cause damage to the shaft seal and cause water intrusion to the lower unit. Tip: Instead of using WD40, which is a liquid base lubricant, use a good marine grease, like Quicksilver 2-4-C to prevent corrosion, it will last a lot longer than WD40. Nice job!
