  • In this video, we will look at the issues that I encountered in the first year of ownership of my 2020 Keystone Bullet 243BHS. We will also review the general build quality and satisfaction of the travel trailer thus far. I will also share my thoughts on how my Bullet stacks up against my R-Pod during this time frame.

    Hi John! Yesterday I bought (ordered) a 2021 R-Pod 180. I'm pulling it with my 2019 Tacoma (AWD, V-6, Tow Pckg). I'm in deep south Georgia just above the Florida line. I've devoured all your videos about the R-Pod and I'm excited to get going! I'll be counting on you to show me the way to successfully "Pod!" All the Best!

    This was a great video. My next camper will likely be a Bullet 273bhs and your issues, while annoying, were not deal breakers. I currently have a wildwood xlite hybrid and I've had various problems with it, ones that happened far too soon on a lightly used unit. Your points are spot on though, especially the dealer aspect. Most if not all of these are built generally the same and far too quick. I'm never one for government oversight but this industry really needs to be regulated like the auto industry, in a lot of cases its highway robbery with the poor craftsmanship and the lack of support afterwards.

      Thanks for the comment. My Bullet 243BHS has held up well structurally after two years, however, I have had a few issues with appliances since this video, including the A/C being replaced under warranty. I hope to put out a 2-Year review sometime later this summer that covers my issues since this video. Thanks again!

    Thanks John.... we pick up our Bullet in a few weeks. It’s a first for me... never owned a trailer. I am hoping that the issues you’ve pointed out will not be issues for us, but we will be on the lookout all the same thanks to your attention to detail. First shakedown will be in May! Wish us luck!

      Chris, congrats on the new trailer. I have been using my Bullet extensively since I cut this video and generally am happy with it. Lately I’ve had issues with some of the components and not the actual trailer. I’ll likely put out a two year video this spring. Thanks!

      Please keep us informed, both Chris and John. We are currently looking to buy a bullet 290 but am worried about the general RV horror stories. It would be our first trailer also. I gather the bullets are built pretty well but would love to hear more on your use.

      I think you will be hard pressed to find great quality at this price range for any manufacturer. My experience is that what you save upfront in cost, you generally make up for in time and money given increased warranty work and maintenance. That doesn't mean that it can't work well if you level-set expectation and realize that likely there will be some issues to deal with. It also helps to be willing to learn and do much of the maintenance work yourself. As someone on a forum recently said, "they make them fast and cheap, we make them good." The other choice is spending 2-3x upfront for better quality, which many people do. Thanks!

    My Keystone Passport GT is a piece of junk. It is a 2021 and is a 2400 RB. Nothing but problems out of it and horrible management and Keystone could care less. This is based on my own personal opinion and experience. I also climbed the back ladder and it broke and they claim I told them it was cracked and then I did it. Not true ! It cracked because of me climbing it and no sticker on it telling the weight limit. I had a warped refrigerator door, warped cabinet door. Both sliding doors coming off the tract. Top of shower coming apart. Sharp edges on some of the wood. The bed was not the original bed. Someone switched it out and the whole bottom of it was ripped. The wood on the right side of the bed was all chewed up. Sawdust still coming out everywhere. Light covers come of everywhere in the camper after you have been on the road. The GE A/C is so loud that you can barely hear the TV. Lot more stuff I found. I find the Director Of Operations rude and unprofessional for Keystone RV. Please buy a Forest River or something else but I would stay away from Keystone RV.

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing. My Keystone Bullet had issues early but has been stellar lately. Not so much for my Forest River R-Pod. Unfortunately it seems like a crap shoot if you get one made well or poorly. Thanks again!

    Good video John, thanks for making it. I have the exact same Tundra; have you found any issues or do you have any advice for towing the same bullet?

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jake I have loved my Tundra and it turns four years old this week. I tow my 243BHS with it regularly, including long trips with no issues. I use a Blue Ox Sway Pro weight distribution hitch and it’s worked well. I likely wouldn’t tow more trailer than the 6,000-6,500 lbs this 243BHS is loaded. Here are two more videos of mine to watch:

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert, I would be pretty upset about being duped on this - being sold something as new that had a major repair that wasn't disclosed. I would let the dealer know that they need to fix it to your satisfaction or refund your money. If they push back, you may want to contact an attorney and talk through your options. Sorry to hear this. Keep me posted.

    I have that same Dometic thermostat in my 2018 R-pod 179 and had a similar unresponsive issue. The tech figured out how to fix it by removing the front panel and reseating the foam behind the buttons as they can get depressed and won't respond. I haven't had an issue since.
    It seems like the problems varying a lot from one Rpod to another. I didn't have the same issues as you like your floor support problem, which you would think would happen to all 179 if built with the same support system? The biggest issues for me was the water tubing in the pump area sprung a leak because it looked like it got sliced during assembly and burst during a camping trip and I used duct tape to temporarily fix it (yes always bring duct tape!). Also the heater would not work because it had a faulty connection but the real nightmare was the dealer removed the heater and found out it was working then replaced it but when screwing it back in didn't use the same holes and screwed right through a water hose under the floor and they had to remove the bed and section of flooring, just to fix it!
    I also think we agree that Forest River could do a lot better in there quality control when building the Rpods. I found leftover junk in hidden areas, trim not attached, screws not holding to the the thin walls as no plastic anchor inserts were used. I emailed Forest River with over a dozen issues and was thanked for my feedback but do not know if it's gotten better? With all the huge interest in people buying RVs I sure hope they are not forgetting about quality control in pushing them out quickly?!

      Thanks Mike. Agree on all counts. I think I had sawdust showing up in my 179 even after many trips. I have a pic of under the wet bath (the vent fell off after travel a while back) and found the thermostat manual under there. Interestingly, no sawdust or screws or other debris in the Bullet, other than the person who installed the microwave doing a poor job. Apparently someone actually vacuumed up junk after assembly. Always good to hear from you. Feel free to connect anytime on Instagram or Twitter.

    Hello John. We just purchased a 2021 Bullet 243bhs. We live in Colorado. Is it necessary to use a spray foam on gaps underneath to prevent mice from entering ? We have the enclosed underbelly. Thanks for any advice. Thank you.

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t sealed any gaps in the underside of the trailer but I do put Fresh Cab and dryer sheets in various places in the cargo hold and inside the trailer. Here is a link to an older video I published on steps to storing my R-Pod that may help: th-cam.com/video/rHxwNv9Ire0/w-d-xo.html

    John, why was the thermostat warranty claim denied by the manufacturer initially?

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harley, no reason was given. I think b/c the thermostat worked, they ignored the fact that is wasn't responding well to touch. I suppose that after a year and hearing more complaints on that model, it became easier to get a warranty replacement. Thanks!

  • @jamiemurray9937
    @jamiemurray9937 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would you recommend the extended warranty for this trailer? Thank you for all your tips and tricks!!

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really don't think most extended warranties are a good deal. That being said, you may get a unit that you wish you had one. Keystone has a full 1 year warranty and a 3 year structural warranty, which is pretty good. Generally, after a couple of years, I plan to do my own maintenance and self-insure. It is really your call, and many people do think extended warranties can be useful. Hope this helps!

      I have only used it one winter in Florida so I have no experience using it in lasting below-freezing temps. It does have heated and enclosed underbelly which may help. I would point you to the Keystone Bullet Facebook group to ask as there are likely others who have used them in full winter. Thanks!

      If it is a Keystone trailer has a 3 Year structural warranty. I would push back on the dealer and contact Keystone to have them fix the issue under warranty. Unless they can prove it is due to your negligence, it is a new trailer and they need to honor their warranty.
