    Travel Trailer Living for RV Newbies - Buying & Prepping our first First RV!
    WOW, there is so much to learn and so much to buy for RV Life! lol BUT it's totally possible to do it all on a $20,000 budget. We're here to show you guys our process and what we've learned we're going to need.
    We definitely had our work cut out for us when it came to buying and prepping our first RV travel trailer for our first trip! Our RV Setup wasn't too complicated but took careful planning and patience. Before we could begin full-time RVing, there were several things we needed to get clear on, especially if our plan was to mostly learn how to boondock.
    Having an RV checklist also helped us to stay organized in that process and we hoped to present our information in similar fashion.
    Here are some of the steps and RV essentials that we put together to prevent any beginner RV mistakes (still bound to happen lol) and get ourselves ready for full time RV living!!

    Fellow RV NEWBS: Hey! If you're currently looking for your first rig and this vid helped you out - be sure to check out our other tutorial vid that goes a lot more in detail about everything we did to learn about RV life and how we found our Travel Trailer online:
    th-cam.com/video/NwNDLbsCylI/w-d-xo.html
    ALSO! We said something confusing (and wrong) in this video that we want to clear up!
    For #4 Title & Insurance:
    **Title registration at DMV - this is what we had to do when purchasing a TT from Colorado and towing it back to California.
    MAKE SURE YOU LOOK UP THE LAW FOR YOUR STATE. Some people have let us know they didn't have to bring their TT to the DMV. We did. But you'll of course need the Bill of Sale/Pink slip (proof of purchase) and insurance on your tow vehicle...
    **Trailer Insurance - LOL when I watch this back I cringe a little! We were told we needed insurance immediately when towing our trailer from CO to CA. We've since learned that that wasn't necessary (though it doesn't hurt if you're going to get it insured anyway, like we were.) You can find on google "Liability insurance is generally extended from your car insurance policy to your RV when you are towing it." That being said, you don't NEED additional insurance on the TT you're buying from someone when towing it back to your home state. You just need proof that your vehicle is insured. (Class A, B, and C do need to be insured of course)
    Hope that helps and sorry for any confusion. We always try our best to give the most honest info and share our experience. 👍🏽

      I just bought the exact same model last week used -- but manufactured by "Outpost" and with all Coleman Alliances. Excellent condition. I paid USD 6,800.00. Same everything you bought...

    As a general rule you aren't suppose to grab the max weight trailer for your vehicles towing "capability". My SUV is rated for 7300lbs and I have been told by everyone to stick below 4000 and ideally under 20' of trailer, even then I'll need a weight distribution hitch and trailer brake controller. Its not the power, its also the wheel base, SUV's are shorter than half ton trucks and high winds can make things super sketchy.

      That’s like my 3/4 ton has a 16k towing capacity but I personally won’t go over 12k

      You need to be aware of the tongue weight you have on the hitch.

  • @RidingwithStymie
    @RidingwithStymie 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    For long distance towing and/or full-time RVing, it is generally recommended to not exceed 70% of the vehicle's maximum towing capacity. So, in this case: 8100 x 0.7 = 5,670 lbs. This has always been my understanding. This is because the maximum tow rating is only an absolute maximum, for a short trip across town. It doesn't take into account the stress of things like driving up into the mountains, etc.

    By now you have moved on from this. A couple of things to note if you have not been on the road before. 1. INVEST IN TRAILER BRAKING SYSTEM FOR YOUR TOW VEHICLE. 2. Try to buy a Trailer where the waste disposal connections do not hang low to the ground, you may find that "Boondocking" is a problem and you scrape them off/break them on rough roads. 3. It's advisable to ADD A TRANSMISSION COOLER to your Tow Vehicle even if you have one from the factory. If you are pulling in the summer heat out west you want to keep your Transmission Temperatures under control. Definitely get the weight distribution hitch. You should also have a good power drill which makes the Stabilizing Jacks on the trailer easy to raise and lower. And Trailer are often just stapled together. Take a good look at the wiring andd plumbing if you can see it BEFORE buying any RV. RV's take a beating and something always breaks. Invest in a few good rolls of Duct Tape or Gaffers Tape for the temporary repairs you are going to have along the way. And if you find staples that have popped out... test to see if there is something solid on the location they came out and use SCREWS. Always inspect the roof and window seems on used trailers. That should cover a little bit more of what you will want to know to get started. If you have a 3 way fridge AC, DC, Gas you will need to be sure you always level your trailer so the refrigertor will function properly. Put in a carbon monoxide and propane detector if you do not have one. Invest in a good Doggy Bed if you are taking along your pets (Which you should as they are great Alarm Systems). If you have never backed a trailer find a big open parking lot and PRACTICE. Buy a back up camera.

    Helpful video for someone getting started. For boondocking - you will need to carry your water in and your waste out so you really need to include that in your load planning. It looked like your waste hose had a big drop exiting your rig and then a climb up to a peak where you begin the hose support. I’d eliminate using the highest hose supports that cause this as poop needs to go down hill.

    This is not easy. This video covered a lot, but I still don't know about getting water and electricity if "boondocking." How to get television reception/cable or internet. How do you have mail, packages, or even pizzas delivered? How long does a generator last? Are there any camps/etc that allow stays for extrended periods, like six months, or even full years? I'm looking at RVing as an emergency / affordable full time home; until I can afford a real home. Most videos only cover the topic as something that's extra to a real home.

      @DannyWalker247 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are basically camping when you are boondocking. You carry your water with you and you use your batteries and generator. Get pizza delivered? LOL. Internet? Take some good books with you for when you are not out exploring the boondocks. You really want to know the hardest part? Living in such close quarters with the person or people you will be traveling with. I would never do this because I am sure it would lead to my divorce.

    • @pgrant7688
      @pgrant7688 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DannyWalker247 lol boondocking isn’t that bad. We have 11 acres of land we are going to build a house on, but we boondock there now since it has no electricity or city water. You fill your fresh water tank and you carry it where you’re going. You dump your gray/black tanks on a travel day. I bought a hot spot for Internet, and I’ll use a fire stick for videos. We connect our generator, which I’ve had for 10 years. It’s been great except the one time when it wasn’t. We had made dinner, had some drinks and were about to go to bed at 1130 pm when the generator quit. Did I mention I live in South Texas and it was 90 degrees? It made for a sweaty night, lol. Make sure your generator is in good condition, and use non-ethanol fuel! Ours was low on oil and once we corrected it, it hasn’t caused a problem since.

    1 pointer from experience, da hose setup at 9:04 aint ideal... the chocolate river wont get over the furst hump. gotta keep a gradual slop down from the spout. You prob already know this, but incase someone reads this n learns somnnew

    This is a really well done video, covering a lot of stuff in an engaging way for newbies. Your towing info is well done too, but still unclear on all that goes into payload. Specifically the weight of gas (215 lbs for your SUV) and your hitch equipment (100 lbs). If the 562 lbs number is from the manufacturer, it will exclude the battery and propane which mostly adds to hitch weight (not to mention any added trailer content such as food, clothes, chairs, fresh water, etc. -- a portion of which - maybe 10-15% - goes to the hitch). If these things were not included, you might be over the limit. When you are loaded for travel, a stop at a weigh station might help.

    Nice video. I'm saving for a small trailer. I'm going either tab 320, scampt 13ft with bathroom or a great Ascape ST. I have a 4runner so besides I like small maneuverable trailers, light and if I dont live in it. Use it for my vacations or retirement to travel all over N America.

    Very informative, well done. One thing you didn't touch on was 4 wheel drive? How important is it really? I have a great tow vehicle but it doesn't have 4wd. BTW I have never driven in snow conditions.
