This is my favorite salsa video on TH-cam. Very informational and it looks like too much fun! You two make it look too easy. I need to learn this. I will be in touch. Thanks!
The introduction to steps is instructive. Even the isolated showing of steps is also instructive. Yet I believe not enough for true beginners. Especially when you break out into much more complicated steps and movements. This is the exactly why beginners don't continue.
In response to the questions...is there more than one way to dance Salsa on2? The answer is yes. The style taught in this video is the Eddie Torres, NY Style Salsa danced on counts 1,2,3 5,6,7. The other style of On2 Salsa is called Palladium Style Salsa. It is the style danced in Ballroom Mambo. If you notice in the Eddie Torres style the forward and back breaks are still on 2 & 6, but you have an additional forward and back step before the breaks which tend to give it a smoother feel.
Nice and I prefer the way the rhythm take places as that. Unfortunately not very common, here where I live, most dance on 1 and it looks like a binary dance, as I understand it the on one way was done to simplify access to the dance ( ?) You seem to have fun ! thanks for the videos
Just like the great Eddie Torres himself, you're counting "1-2-3, 5-6-7" but starting at 4'28" you're actually stepping on 2-3-"4and" - 6-7-"8and" (wich is, technically speaking, the second eighth note of beats 4 and 8 in alla breve timing). And it's great that you do so (and not only you, but most everyone who dances "on2 Torres style"), because what would be the point in dancing "on2" if it differed from "on1" only by breaking backwards on "2" instead of forward on "1", preserving the same counts or accentuation of the rhythm. As many instructors put it, "on2" is more deeply connected with the rhythmical core of the music, translating the clave, tumbao and bass line into movement. Imho this is done in the purest way accentuating "2-3-4 - 6-7-8" (Palladium style mambo). And in my personal view it feels most natural to dance this way when the music is rather slow and sensual and has a traditional Son touch to it, while modifying the counts towards the way you're beautifully demonstrating it (2-3-"4and" - 6-7-"8and") when the music gets faster and more dynamic. But as I said - this is my very personal approach, may everybody dance as they please - as long as there's any connection whatsoever between rhythm and movement. ;-)
There is no switch to the Palladium style at 4:25. The dancing remains on the On2 Eddie Torres style without steps being taken on counts 4 and 8. Watch again carefully and count the timing. :)
You're right. But more accurately, the break step is on count 2. That means the step right before the guy steps forward again should be on count 2. Does that make sense?
davis2022 you were told wrong - in on2 the back step is on the right, not the left. The step is initiated on count 1 with the left foot, then the break step happens on count 2 with the right foot.
Hola, como sabemos que estamos en tiempo con la musica, podemos seguir algun instrumento? para saber que estamos haciendo bien la pisada con algun instrumento y no ir ni rapido ni lento?
@StepintoSalsa Sorry, have watched many times and can still see you stepping on the 4 and the 8 rather than the 1 and 5. Check it out at around 4:50 - it's very clear! I think the reason for the "smoothness" that NY On2 is reputed to have comes largely from the slow transference of weight across the two beats 8-1 and then 4-5. In other words the ball of the foot generally gets planted on the 4 and the 8 but weight transfer continues to the 5 and 1 respectively.
So please see the roots of salsa dance here, be sure to watch the part with the Clave and later at 8:10 (no step on the 1): th-cam.com/video/GEzledFPLeM/w-d-xo.html
There's much more that this style is different from than LA. The direction of the step is just a small thing in a much bigger picture. Most show teams use On 2 dancing because it's much smoother and the accents in the music are different. To compare, when you do a crossbody lead with an inside turn it's quite easy to fit 2,5 or even 3,5 turns in there with NY style, whereas LA would allow 1,5 or 2,5 with some difficulty
Shit I never ever in my life took lessons on salsa dancing. And I think I am a pretty good salsa dancer. Grew up in Puerto Rico Carolina P.R. Salsa dancing comes from within the soul. This is so ROBOTIC.
Please see the actual roots of salsa dance here, be sure to watch the part with the Clave and later at 8:10 (no step on the 1): th-cam.com/video/GEzledFPLeM/w-d-xo.html
Your teaching of the steps in Eddie Torres style is clear and direct, and you clearly say that you are teaching Eddie Torres style (1,2,3 5,6,7) and not Palladium style (2,3,4 6,7,8), yet why, when you come to demonstrate the steps to music at about 4:25, you perform them in Palladium style (2,3,4 6,7 8)???? Very frustrating. To be fair however, you are not alone in this inconsistency. Can you direct me to a clip showing anyone actually performing Eddies Torres NY style salsa?
You are confusing the Palladium style of Salsa with the more progressive NY Style of Salsa. Dancing the NY Style does not mean your first step is on 1 or on 2, it means your BREAK STEPS are on 2. The break steps in the videos are on 2. I think you need to make sure you have enough knowledge about the topic before you get into a rage about it.
Again, you need to understand what a break step is. It is not simply a backward or forward step. It is the step in which you change direction. Therefore I suggest YOU take a lesson in order to get your facts straight.

Thanks so much Kaleena!

I really like the way you both teach:)
+crafty4u Thank you!
Thanks Rodney! :) The name of the song is "No Quiero Llanto" by El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.

The name of that song is "Back to the Roots" by Dave Pike

Nice! Really liked it. Thanks guys!
Gracias los adoro

I was told than with 'on 2' salsa, that the guy steps back with his left foot on 2. Here, you're starting on 1 right? I'm confused.

Love it you guys are great !
+TheAnamano Thank you. :)

the difference with dancing on 1 n on 2 is just wj]here you put the foot. still 8 steps in total. I dance both
Nun ya, n yeah
I was told if I learned on 2 first I'd be able to dance on 1, 2 & on 3.
Is Cuban salsa on 1 or on 2?
Look into Cuban Son dancing...probably the roots of it all.

this was a great each I understood everything
I am glad. Hope it helped. :)
Out of concern for beginners who may be going through the same confusion I did when learning this style
@ericdanthon2 : New swing sextet - My favorite things
I'm 100% fine with my musicality, but thanks for your concern...
Hello
Agreed

Salsa on2 is confusing...that's my conclusion on it
Everyone who started had the same confusion ask any advanced dancer so don't get discouraged , with time it will become easier
Shit I never ever in my life took lessons on salsa dancing. And I think I am a pretty good salsa dancer. Grew up in Puerto Rico Carolina P.R. Salsa dancing comes from within the soul. This is so ROBOTIC.
It looks robotic but it's for beginners so we cannot get crazy while explaining and teaching basic steps
Please see the actual roots of salsa dance here, be sure to watch the part with the Clave and later at 8:10 (no step on the 1):
th-cam.com/video/GEzledFPLeM/w-d-xo.html
I prefer sticking with step 1 not bashing step 2 I'm just use to step 1.
on 2 means on 2,4,6 ... if yur stepping on 1,3 5 ... the its pn one and that's what THIS IS

They are still dancing on1 but they believe they are dancing on2.

i can't wait to learn salsa so i can stop watching guys dance at the bar
Try to be "different" at all costs... This so called "NY style" is nothing but salsa on (irrational) 5 Timing...
Steal? It's called evolution.
Lady... it looks like you are marching... something is not right about how you step!
Before you start teaching lessons, first learn to dance....
What is that crap. Cuban salsa rules
I am glad. Hope it helped. :)
