Ahh NyRican Style Salsa...The creator and pioneer of this Salsa on tha2 Eddie Torres La Legenda who took this thing called Salsa all over the globe and people change the name to the steps that eddie torres made. thanks for sharing.
I came across your blog, Jack of Many Trades, and was interested in your travels to Colombia. I myself am planning a three month trip to Cali and am interested in taking classes at Swing Latino. I was wondering if you could enlighten me on the price of classes. I've tried contacting the studio but no one has answered. I would appreciate it greatly! Thank you.
You're new york (eddie torres) on2 is off. The step should be syncopated not always on top of the numbers (instead of 1 and 5, the step should come in between the counts on the "8 and", "4 and"). Often you hear dancers count this using 1 and 5, but they swing the count with a long sounding 1 and 5 ("ooonnee...,2,3,fiiiive......,6,7"). You also forgot 'Son' timing, the feel of which is different from 'power 2' (what you described as palladium timing).
thanks for the comment! you are right. tumbao starts on "8 and" and also on "4 and". joel has a better explanation than what i provided here. please see his video th-cam.com/video/0hOFFpLYl8k/w-d-xo.html also i was surprised to learn there's 6 different claves! 6! crazy right? www.formedia.ca/rhythms/1clave.html there's so much to learn. i hope this info helps someone out there and sorry for my misinformation from long ago :)
This is Not a Cha Cha song, this is a Son. You can use the chacha step or the apropriate step the Son step on the basic count 234-678 or as he is doing on the derivate of the Son step , The Palladium on 2 basic.
This is awesome. great counting really helpful. super like! :)

So much focus on steps
I wish you would have let the music do the talking. You are overshouting the music by counting your steps.
