Bringing back Milo and the old school music took me back many years bro! I was a Milo stockpiler during the shortage years… I blamed you solely for the increase in sales and resulting shortage of supply 😂
I worked in the supply chain department of a hardware retail chain when this was selling out. My team's job was to keep us in stock and we had many conversations with MMSD during this time. To understand why it was selling so well, I started searching online and it became my first introduction to both Milorganite and Allyn. While those days were challenging and frustrating, today I am more educated in lawn care as a result. I've been following the Lawn Car Nut and Yard Mastery cool season plans ever since. 😊
You turned me on to Milo back then and I've been hooked on LCN since then. Chicago area prices haven't come down since... I miss $9/bag. Which is why I've converted to almost 100% Yard Mastery fert. Your yard and the Freedom Factory are looking fabulous. I am hopeful Cleetus doesn’t “burn” in his own stripes. BTW, why does it say FL 5200 sq ft on the bottom of the Milo bag?
Still my go to product I've gotten down to only Spring and late fall applications I go pretty heavy on the late fall drop. My local Ace still has spring deals for $9-$10 a bag so it's not as "rare" as it used to be. I use this method when putting down fertilizer, measuring the square feet and calculating how many pounds I will need. It definitely works as I have the greenest, thickest grass in mid April (Northeast) in my neighborhood. All my neighbors ask me how I do it. I tell them you have to measure your yard if you want to make sure your getting enough fertilizer down. Also, instead of using a scale for measuring the fertilizer, I found it's faster to just convert it to ounces and use a big juice pitcher (Amazon) with the ounces labeled on the side. You pour it in the pitcher and your done instead of remeasuring several times with the scale. Milogranite is also an awesome product. You never have to worry about burning your grass and it provides a deep rich green color.

2018 was exactly when I got into lawn care and became a lawn care nut. We got our house in Tampa 2017 and all I did was water and cut, didn't know anything. February 2018 came and my lawn went full dormant as it was watered enough and hadn't been fertilized. I found this channel, followed his tips, and the lawn bounced back very nicely. Currently my "nuttiness" has taken a break since I have a toddler and we have separate companies doing the lawn/landscaping care and treatments. But I'll always be a lawn care nut and I still watch every video. 😊
I have issues with that exact spreader, as do many people based on Home Depot reviews too. The throw from the impeller throw hits the wheels (the ferts get stuck in the hollow cavity inside the wheels) and you end up with stripes in the lawn :( I just go with a hand spreaders now, luckily my yard is only 6000 sq.ft.
I was around for the great Milo shortage. I had a friend who found it 40+ miles away from where I live and we bought a bunch of it and made a road trip to get it.
From the Milorganite website, this is why it says FL 5200 sqft. “Florida and Maryland, for example, limit the application rate to 32 lbs. of Milorganite for every 5,200 sq ft. Always check state and local fertilizer ordinances and restrictions.”

At the beginning of the video, you said the whole bags analysis contains 6%N. Your calculations didn't consider the 32lbs, and it didn't look like you considered the tare weight of the bucket. Good content. Thanks
Sta-Green has an excellent natural fertilizer with a 16-0-10 analysis, that’s what my soil wanted after high phosphorus numbers from years of Milorganite use.
I was around for the 2018 mess. I went to a local landscape supply and nursery and got the pro stuff with the smaller prills and stocked up 50lb bags got like 8 of them
For those of us living in Florida, where the rate is 5200 Sq Ft per 32 lb bag (6.15 lbs per 1000sq Ft), surely this means that the gap setting on the spreader needs to be reduced accordingly? Otherwise, it will be spread too quickly and run out around halfway. I'd like to hear back from anyone who has already realized this and made the required adjustment. Thanks.
I loved milorganite but no potassium left my lawn stressed and prone to disease come summer. Be sure to add K to your mix so it is not best to only go with one fertilizer hoping it will handle complex lawn issues. Remember N-P-K is nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium or easier to remember UP , DOWN, ALL AROUND!
Have 3 bags of LCN product in my garage... walking into a local Ace Hardware -- there stood a pile of Milo. Couldn't help myself. Bought enough for an app. Sometimes you just gotta go with Milo!!
Oh yes I remember it well. I didn’t buy enough on my first trip to the big box store When I went back. A guy was putting the last bag on a push cart. Looks at me and says” you didn’t take enough did you” so he let me have a couple of bags. He had about ten or twelve bags left on his cart. Thanked him and then I learned to do my math correctly. Never happened again👍
Thanks for all the helpful and intellectual info, greatly appreciated! One question, why use the edge guard at property line and not share the wealth?! Especially in the case of herbicide.. Wouldn’t you be decreasing probability of weeds coming across by backing out that treated area further?
The fert gets dispensed out of the impeller INTO the hollow Scott's wheel well, and then it falls out of the wheel as you walk in an even, over-ferted line - and produces lines in your fertilized lawn. You've been told. Scott's is a publicly traded company worth $4.08B - and apparently they cannot provide a closed plastic wheel in their low-end $90 spreader. I remember the Milo problem well - back when I paid $40 for my Scott's spreader.
When it was $6-$7 a bag, I used it during my hottest summer months…good stuff. 2020 came and like everything else it became stupid expensive. I think it hovers around $25 for a #32 bag.
Oh those were the days...the stuff works, and you really couldn't overdo it. I also remember listening to Boogaloo Assassins background music as you were throwing it down!
I have that spreader, as long as it’s not the first, last, or an app in mid summer I just open the spreader as much as possible and thrower down the milo!!!!!
I remember buying a season's worth and driving an hour away because it was sold out in a couple of days. I had to make sure I had enough for the season
Wanted it and so did everyone else. A neighbor gave me enough for one app but then the price well more than doubled so I bailed for synthetics. I’d rather use it but cost matters.
I used milo and used to have serious fungus it seemed like it would rain and my grass would melt. I stopped putting milo down and my fungus issue disappeared. I dont know if it was milo but since i stopped using it my st aug hasnt needed any fungicide for like 3 years.
I'm definitely going to get the grub X and peel off the moss in front of the house. Do I really need to do this ? I'm planning on getting some Scott grass seed. 6:23
Let me know if the wheels still are higher than the impeller, catching the fertilizer between the wheels and causing green stripes. I could hear it hitting your wheels @10:58. Mine was terrible. I tried walking faster, but it didn’t matter. I contacted Scott’s and they sent me a refund. It was a terrible design flaw that a few people have made videos about.
Remember FL is 5200 sqft. Not 2500 sqft for your bag rate if your soil test is deficient in P. You have said in the past on video's?? Am i not correct in mentioning this??
Thanks for the educative videos - always a pleasure to watch. Are we ignoring the FL application rate of 6.4 ? why does it says 5000sqft for FL and 2500 for other states? What would you recommend?
LCN - I LOVE your content! I've been a huge fan for quite some time. Can you please tell me - - - I have a lawn that is one side Zoysia - the other side a Zoysia-Bermuda mix. Is there any way I can get rid of the Bermuda to make my lawn pure Zoysia? I thank you!
Wow… I’ve *never* weighed or calculated my fertilizer, ever. It’s not that exact, just estimate, it’s fertilizer! lol I’ve always spread more than the bag rate & have the greenest, healthiest lawn in my neighborhood. I just make sure to never stop walking without closing the chute first & heavily water in afterwards. It’s like a carpet❣️ ⛳️ I applaud your effort though. 😁
Love Milo.... But forget the numbers until Scott's fixes the spreader wings from shooting the product into the hollow inside plastic wheels.... The spinning spreader wings should be above the wheels to ensure a proper disbursement....
@@8_one_8 I’ve switched to ProPeat, I feel like it is a better brand and for me has proven to be a better fert. I still like Milo but when it was hard to get and I switched I feel like it was a good move?!
Dang, checking in to see if you were fined for this video. The legality of applying phosphorus to a lawn when it is not deficient in your county. Plus the bag notes 2500 sq ft of coverage but for Florida 5200 sq ft.
Hi Allyn, I do remember when Milo was sold out. I was fortunate and go the last 5 bags at my home center. I have a question I purchased a Earthway 2600a + seeing as you recommended so highly. Do you have a setting for that spreader, or should I use the calibration as you recommended for the Scotts? Thanks, I have watched you since you were in Indiana.

Great Vids! Look forward to them every week!
I LOVE the smell of Milo. I need to put tons more down on my little lawn. :)
I remember, but was already stocked up so avoided the price hikes here in Indiana.
My 32lb bag says 5200 Sq Ft for FL so that would make it 6.15 lbs/1000sq ft.
He is breaking the law and posting it on TH-cam. It is illegal to apply that rate in Florida.
Can you talk about mulching, why or why not because you used that reel mower?
LCN - I LOVE your content! I've been a huge fan for quite some time. Can you please tell me - - - I have a lawn that is one side Zoysia - the other side a Zoysia-Bermuda mix. Is there any way I can get rid of the Bermuda to make my lawn pure Zoysia? I thank you!
yes you can use the same mix I use here: th-cam.com/video/C3uh2C8ND_0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BTAQPouSGMfM0rfV
I'm old enough to remember when it was "organic" 😉 and before the NPK was changed.
What was the old npk? I thought it was always organic. Is it not now?
I remember it used to 5-3-0 and then 6-3-0
@@appiconll can't call it organic anymore because people consume inorganic matter, and the product is from waste water.
Breaking the Law! Know your laws in FL!

Actually, Milo has synthetic fertilizer mixed in. They want to get a quick green while waiting on the slower release organic fertilizer to kick in.
Man the FF is looking GOOD! Just in time for the Freedom 500. You should see if you can get a Yard Mastery sign out there.
Take a look in turn #2 on race day.
Have you ever spent time in the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton area? We also like to say "Couple Two Tree" like we hear at 2:02 in the video
I was around and remember that well, I’ve switched to a different fertilizer since but it served well! Great video Allyn !!
What would you say is one of the biggest reason for switching fertilizer, and what do you use now?
@@8_one_8 I’ve switched to ProPeat, I feel like it is a better brand and for me has proven to be a better fert. I still like Milo but when it was hard to get and I switched I feel like it was a good move?!
I now use ProPeat
Miss these types of videos...home depot in my area no longer carries it, but Ace hardware does..$25 a bag. It use to be 12 bucks
Dang, checking in to see if you were fined for this video. The legality of applying phosphorus to a lawn when it is not deficient in your county. Plus the bag notes 2500 sq ft of coverage but for Florida 5200 sq ft.

I remember the shortage but I didn’t know about LCN back then. Dark days indeed!
