    I did the same thing a few weeks ago. With a crazy work schedule and coaching baseball, the lawn got out of control. Plus it rains a lot in the PNW, so mowing a lawn that was wet AND overgrown wasn’t going to work. Then after chopping down weeks of spring growth, like an idiot, I decided a couple days later to drop the deck low and try and cut pretty low to get rid of the stalks from the seed heads. It took a few weeks of babying for the lawn to recover.

    What I do when I encounter an overgrown customer's lawn is cut it down to length, and then raise the deck an inch and go over it 2-3 more times. Doing that will give the deck more "breathing room" to mulch it up, and it will distribute those smaller clippings deeper into the lawn canopy. It sounds nuts, but it actually works. I've had centipede and zoysia lawns with 10-11" of cut, and got their clippings to virtually disappear. of course, mulching blades work best for that, etc.

    So on the big mowers they typically mow a half inch sometimes a more lower then the setting due to the weight of the mower compressing the grass unlike a push mower that can ride atop the grass. You would have been better off with a mulching deck. My 48” ex mark can cut at 6” and it doesn’t clog up. The 48”toro I had with a bigger motor would clog up. Ex marks deck is designed very well.

    I think part of why it’s clumping so bad is since your lawn is used to that small walk behind mower, the weight of the kubota weighs down and it cuts lower even with the deck at 5 inches, I see the same on my front yard when I use my riding mower every once a while on it. The toro recycler isn’t as heavy so it doesn’t sit in the grass

Now on your 4 th cut raise it to 4.75, on the 5th cut 4.75 different direction, then on the 6th cut raise it to 5. Now in between the cuts wait to 30-an hour that will give time to dry, plus you can blow it the back pack blower. I hope this helps . Thanks

      So true, which is why I try to mow my own. Lawn care companies typically try to keep to their weekly schedule, so will tend to cut it shorter to avoid overgrown lawns in a week. Paying them to mow twice a week would be exorbitant. I also have the same Ego self propelled mower on a quarter acre lot, and I can barely cut the lawn once on a 10 amp-hour battery.

The best thing to do with such an overgrown lawn was to blow the first cuttings into small piles and start packing the brown leaf/lawn compost bags. The mulch blade is just making everything smaller and it will suffocate your root system.

    I have citrazoy in south Florida (ft Lauderdale area) that I planted in Feb. I can’t figure out why it is struggling so much in the freedom factory. This stuff is bullet proof here. I’ve tried empire and zorro, and it gets killed by fungus every year. The citrazoy is really easy to grow. Just like st Augustine, but cut it shorter (1 3/4 inches at my house). It’s Amazing!
    Also, been I. The position you’ve been with overgrown st Augustine. In the future, maybe try to side discharge away from the area you’re cutting and just leave it till the next cut. That way it’s a thinner layer that can dry out on top of the grass. it will be just one layer. Then it won’t be so heavy smashing down your grass. I’m no expert, but that’s the way I’ve done it in the past to avoid it clumping up on you.

    Good grief. I'm not sure how one "accidently" throws equipment away - but if you don't have the equipment to bag, the first thing to do would be to beg, borrow, or rent something that could. Gray leaf spot? Would this be a good time to point out that the first rule of fungal infections is to bag, don't mulch, to avoid spreading the spores and infection? Then you mow (and bag) at the highest setting to start with, drop it a notch and mow it again the next day, repeating the process until it is at your normal preferred mowing height. Also, continue to bag, not mulch, until the fungus is under control.
    Glad I could help. And while I'll probably continue to use the N-Ext line, I think I'll look elsewhere if I need lawn advice. Signed, a happy owner (and as-needed user) of a bagging mower and multiple rakes, including the Maintainer.

    19:57 what I used to do with no blower was wide discharge and cut forward back cut then make all my lines the same direction so all the clumps are in one big pile so I can rake it in a bag. But yea LCN. Keep those baggers. LOL

    What about cutting 1/3 several times over several days to get it back to where it needs to be?

    • @poisonousnut
      @poisonousnut หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      most mowers max out at 4-5 inch deck height. some go up to 6 inch. making it impossible to cut any higher. when it gets this bad you just gotta cut it and remove the clippings from the lawn. not sure what Allen was thinking here

    • @pdureska7814
      @pdureska7814 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@poisonousnut Yes i agree but the point was that i think he was trying to mow it down to his normal height and thats why he scalped some areas. I doubt he had it set at the highest setting. He had a hayfield and for all the cutting he did he needed to spend the time to do some raking. he should have just cut a center swath with a few passes then throw all the clipping towards the center working his way out. Then rake the center swath and repeat the cut to mulch whatever was cut or drop the deck a smidge and do the above. Probably just too busy to take the time to cut over several days.

    • @rogueonevo
      @rogueonevo หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@pdureska7814 he did actually have the highest setting, he mentioned it at the beginning.....1/3 can't really be followed once grass gets this high.... he probably should have cut his loss short early and grab a rake or a lawn sweeper of some sort.... mowing away 5inches worth of grass clippings was never going to be the answer, not sure what his strategy here was but for once, he's made himself look more like a youtuber than a lawn care professional....

    Also, tip for sod planting. Use wood golf tees to keep your seams together. Once the roots start taking, the wood tees will start pushing out and they won't damage your blades like garden stakes/staples will

    Kinda reminds me of auto shop owners that drive around in beaters because they're too busy or tired to work on their own stuff.
    You should have bagged it and included some in each merch order like Cleetus does with his broken race car parts. Or turned it into some limited run "super fert" and sold it.

    Much easier to use zero to to discharge it in large pile. Then trash bags or can. Then you can spread out the remaining. No way all that is going to fall in the canopy. No matter how dry it is. I’m sure many of us have been there before

I do not care for the Palmetto. And it seems like the palmetto doesn’t even grow as good as Saint Augustine, but I also bag mine it’s extra work but I don’t like having the clippings all over the yard and then it dries up looking brown
