  • When Johnny Comes Marching Home (1898)
"Although this song was born during the Civil War, it was not until the Spanish-American War (1898) that it became a national hit. Long before the Civil War this melody (almost note for note) was a touching old Irish streetsong, "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye," which described a young girl seeing her hopelessly maimed sweetheart for the first time upon his return from the war.
The words of this song were written in 1863 by America's great Irish bandmaster (with General Nathaniel Banks' Army) Patrick S. Gilmore, under the pseudonym Louis Lambert. Gilmore had expected the Civil War to end much earlier than it actually did, and he wrote this song in preparation for a mammoth Peace Jubilee which he finally did give in Boston, 1869.
This jubilee, by the way, used a 1000 piece orchestra and 10,000 voices. The song was well received both at this jubilee and also the succeeding one in 1872, but it was not until the time of William McKinley's Presidency and the Spanish-American War that the song actually reached the lips of the people. From that time on this song grew to become one of our greatest. It was abundantly used during both World Wars and in between them.
Today "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" is a sort of national institution. A 1942 movie carried its title, and it is played by brass bands, orchestras, school bands, and jazz bands. It is sung in barrooms and supper clubs, at outings, nightclubs, concerts, and in the home. It is performed by big-voiced baritones and small-voiced folk singers. It is in song books, and on radio and television. This is a song America loves and will always remember."
~The American Song Treasury by Theodore Raph

When Johnny comes marching home again,
      Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give him a hearty welcome then
      Hurrah! Hurrah!
The men will cheer and the boys will shout
The ladies they will all turn out
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.
The old church bell will peal with joy
      Hurrah! Hurrah!
To welcome home our darling boy,
      Hurrah! Hurrah!
The village lads and lassies say
With roses they will strew the way,
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.
      Get ready for the Jubilee,
      Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give the hero three times three,
      Hurrah! Hurrah!
The laurel wreath is ready now
To place upon his loyal brow
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.
Let love and friendship on that day,
      Hurrah, hurrah!
      Their choicest pleasures then display,
      Hurrah, hurrah!
And let each one perform some part,
To fill with joy the warrior's heart,
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home

There's something very sinister about this particular rendition of the Civil War marching song. The rest of the recordings keep a triumphant tone throughout, but Mitch Miller's version has always struck a very dissonant chord, almost as if there's a malicious intention the chipper words can't mask any longer. Maybe it's the accordion, maybe it's the deliberately mismatched pitches, maybe it's all or none of those. Regardless, it's the version I'll always come back to for being more interesting than the rest.

Major General Bunk believe it or not there was cases of ptsd with veterans of the civil war. Seeing your friends heads blown off by rifle fire, People with there limbs missing, disfigured corpses, the suicidal charges at Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Fredericksburg, Nashville and the trench in Petersburg you would obviously would be traumatizing. Mind you over 750,000 soldiers, 50,000 civilians and if you also added the 80,000 deaths of slaves you get over 880,000 dead in a span of four years. I guess you could write a creepypasta about a civil war vet losing his mind and this song playing the background.

"Włodzimierz Bonawentura Krzyżanowski Template:IPAc-pl (Wladimir Krzyzanowski; July 8, 1824 - January 31, 1887) was a Polish military leader and a brigade commander in the Union Army during the American Civil War. In the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg Krzyżanowski helped repel an evening assault by the famed Louisiana Tigers on the Union defenses atop East Cemetery Hill.
      Contents[show]
      Early lifeEdit
Krzyżanowski was born in Rożnowo, Grand Duchy of Posen, into an old Polish noble family that bore the Świnka coat of arms, and whose roots reached back to the 14th century and ownership of the village of Krzyżanowo near Kościan. Krzyżanowski's father and both uncles had fought for Polish independence under Napoleon's banners, and his brother fought in the November 1830 Uprising.
Krzyżanowski was a first cousin to Frédéric Chopin, whose mother Justyna Krzyżanowska's brother was Włodzimierz Krzyżanowski's father. Krzyżanowski took part in the 1846 uprising against Prussia and fled Poland to avoid arrest. He went to Hamburg, Germany, and from there sailed to New York Harbor.
Krzyżanowski worked as a civil engineer and surveyor in Virginia and was instrumental in pushing America's railroads west.
      Civil War serviceEdit
In Washington, D.C., in early 1861, Krzyżanowski enlisted as a private two days after President Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers. Krzyżanowski recruited a company of Polish immigrants, one of the first companies of Union soldiers. He moved the company to New York City, enlisted more immigrants, and soon became colonel of the 58th New York Infantry regiment, listed in the official Army Register as the "Polish Legion".[1][2]
Krzyżanowski participated in the battles of Cross Keys in the Shenandoah Valley, Second Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg in the Eastern Theater. At Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, his men were pushed back through the town as the Union XI Corps retreated. However, Krzyżanowski led a counterattack on July 2 on Cemetery Hill that helped stabilize the faltering Union line.[1]
Later in the year, the XI Corps was sent to the Western Theater to help relieve the Confederate siege of Chattanooga. Krzyżanowski played a role in the Battle of Wauhatchie, where he followed Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker's orders very literally; and he was present at the Third Battle of Chattanooga.[1]
When the XI Corps was dissolved, much of it being added to XX Corps, Krzyżanowski was assigned to command at Bridgeport, Alabama, to guard the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad, and later to Stevenson, Alabama, both commands within the Department of the Cumberland.[1] Krzyżanowski also commanded the 3rd Brigade of the Defenses of the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad, reporting to Maj. Gen. Robert H. Milroy.[2] He led this brigade into an action at the Third Battle of Murfreesboro in which Milroy's troops defeated the renowned Nathan Bedford Forrest.
President Lincoln promoted him to brevet brigadier general on March 2, 1865; previous temporary promotions to general in 1862 and 1863 were rejected by the U.S. Senate.[2]
      PostbellumEdit
After the war, Krzyżanowski was given governing duties in Alabama.[3] He later served as the appointed governor of several Southern states (Florida, Georgia, and Virginia.)[3] Supposedly, he also served as the first American administrator of the Alaska Territory. However, the Anchorage Daily News was unable to find any conclusive information to support or disprove this claim.[4] This posting was a reward for his performance as the personal representative of Secretary Seward during the negotiations for the Purchase of Alaska.[5]
He served in Treasury Department and later in the customs service in Panama and New York.
Krzyżanowski died in New York City. On October 13, 1937, the 50th anniversary of his death, his remains were transferred with military honors from Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York, to Arlington National Cemetery. President Franklin D. Roosevelt broadcast his tribute to the nation via radio, and Poland's President, Ignacy Mościcki, transmitted his esteem from Warsaw."

You should be proud of your father who killed hundreds ( if not thousands) of innocent German children and women and destroyed historical and cultural cities, like Dresden or Hamburg. What a bravery! The Allies targeted only cities with wooden buildings and few anti aircraft guns.
That's also war crimes just as the Nazis did to the jews.

@@rainz-wu3sx You know there's some major differences between fight against the Nazis and kill 25000 civilians. You continue bombing Germany even after it was totally unnecessary because Germany was already defeated. And 1944-1945 the Americans not even targeted military facilities, but old cities with wooden structure because it was easy to ignite. I don't see differences between this and 9/11. Both were terror attacks and because to terrorize the citizens.

      @russianboogeyman544 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ussindianapolis487 Of course. The allies not always targeted military facilities, in 1944 and 1945 they rather bombed cities and civilian targets, with wooden city structures. For example they bombed Dresden to the ground, which was a beautiful city with buildings from the baroque age. Dresden was called in the Venice on the shore of the Elba. And when they destroyed Hamburg they killed 42000 women and children, whose only crime was they lived in Hamburg. These were crimes against the humanity but nobody cared about that.
