Emmet obviously has the best arc in the movie but my boy Benny deserves a huge credit for going insane building his "SPACESHIP, SPACESHIP, SPACESHIP!!!!!" after everybody rejected his idea. Charlie Day must've had a blast voicing him 😅
Fun fact about Good cop/bad cop: originally they wanted to record those lines separately, but Liam Neeson actually INSISTED on doing them together. And as you can see, he does it flawlessly.
The Lego Movie still remains one of my favourite animated movies, not just because I grew up with Lego throughout my childhood and teen years, but also because it was more than just a commercial film, it was a heartfelt, well written and passionate celebration of the power of imagination and creativity that made the childhoods of countless people, including myself.
I wish they had a callback to the original LEGO’s, the minifigs are the newer iteration of characters. As a kid my first set were those really early 70’s ones, super basic and larger. They had a shoutout to the little kid ones, the really big blocks. An OG LEGO insert is a missed opportunity, but I bet the folks that made it aren’t old enough to remember them.
I think what's funnier is that the ships turned aggressively together after the ball hit. Also, gotta love how they had Cleopatra, Green Lantern, and Superman and instead they decided to use a basketball 😂😂😂
They nailed the lego aesthetic and stilted movement so perfectly that people were convinced it must be stop motion. But nope, the cgi is just that good.
The Corridor Crew explained how they did it in one of their videos. They tweak the focus so it looks like a camera lens is filming something small and close-up.
Iirc, I believe they also scanned a bunch of lego pieces/people and added in little imperfections like pitting in the plastic to make everything look even more realistic. They even gave Benny a broken helmet because they always seemed to break (with regular wear & tear from being played with) in that same exact spot for everyone lol!
One of the few films where Chris Pratt's voice works. It's a shame this movie got snubbed at the Oscars. The director was so upset that he built one out of Lego. What a power move.
One thing that I feel is terribly glossed over when people watch this movie is the moment of acting and music perfection that happens when the dad looks at president business. The sheer horror on the dad’s face that he so fiercely conceals realising not only how creative and brilliant his son is, and how he denied it for so long, but also that out of all the creations and designs at his son’s disposal, the ‘big bad’ he thought of was his own father. The fusion of disappointment and fear and shame that the dad feels realising his son views him as this ‘villain’ that he has to redeem is just heartbreaking. Following that, the dad then has to reconcile this by allowing his son the confidence to speak up to him by placing his question within the context of the story. That moment is a masterclass of acting, story and environment that is truly rare, and not done in any ‘gimmick’ movie before or since.
I read a comment said about how brilliant The Lego Movie is as a satire. And that I think is why the movie works as a story. Vitruvius and Bad Cop were there to make fun of their voice actors who often get typecast playing characters with similar personality. The plot is making fun of many movies feature the same "Chosen goes on an adventure" story structure. The song, "Everything Is Awesome" was meant to make fun of the fact that movies these days tend to use generic pop songs in their soundtrack. The Lego Movie wasn't afraid to poke fun at cinematic tropes which makes an enjoyable experience. And what's even better is that the word "Lego" was not mentioned at all, which is honestly impressive how the script got away with something awesome like that The Lego Movie have everything that you didn't ask for but have something that you definitely didn't knew you needed the most for a movie like this
On paper, this could seemed like a lazy cash grab as an excuse to sell more Legos. But the minds of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller managed to make something original, unique, and satisfying in execution. It's just so amazing how The Lego Movie went from being so underestimated and become one of the best animated movie ever. You can just tell everyone in this movie worked their ass off to make a movie that's entertaining for all ages, it's not just a paycheck job, there is actually effort to make an awesome movie and I totally admire that
I feel like The Playmobil Movie is what people expected The Lego Movie to be. A shameless cash grab just made to sell Lego sets. And admittedly this film was made to sell sets but it also stood on its own as a great movie
Dude, this movie has so many nods to LEGO, clutch powers pales in comparison (even though I love clutch powers) Piece names, having a mini figure with two swappable faces, I don’t know.. it’s impossible to list everything, cause everything’s in there
What kind of f*cked up universe are we living in where neither this film nor Puss in Boots 2 nor Across the Spider-Verse won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature?
This definitely deserved to win over Big Hero 6. That was the year that it came out that a lot of voters for animation were just choosing films their kids liked or because it's Disney or because they're racist twats that refuse to credit something not in English. Puss in Boots 2 was great but it lost to Pinocchio so I'm not too pissed about that. Both would've been valid winners. Across the Spider-Verse was good but it was half a movie. It didn't have a proper ending and now that we're waiting even longer for the sequel, I'm glad they didn't give it the Oscar. Although, I think they gave it to Boy and the Heron just because Miyazaki was retiring.
@@SpiritxEnigma hey just because im not good at punctation because of the sudden switch from writing to typing and anyway im correct into the spiderverse is the better movie because its the first one so its more available for people to watch because not everyone can start on the second movie thats how they pick awards but also hollywood is a disney suck up to dont forget that if disney wants an award they just pay to win behind the scenes
The moment the Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures logo came with that music in the background, it was the moment where everybody changed their minds that this movie is going as hard as they possibly could. From the opening logo, you just know that you're in some Lego treat.
Chris Pratt Will Ferrell Elizabeth Banks Will Arnett Nick Offerman Alison Brie Charlie Day with Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman Man, The Lego Movie truly has some of the best ensemble cast in an animated movie ever. I really wanna see a behind the scene footage of Charlie Day screaming "SPACESHIP" in his booth when he was recording Benny's voice 😂😂
Even though this movie is all CGI, all the Lego Bricks in the movie are actual pieces you can find in the real world. 5:22 that closeup on his hair, the detail. You can see all the texture and even the hair plastic fuse lines. It's absolutely incredible.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller had a huge jackpot in 2014. In February, they released The Lego Movie. In June, they released 22 Jump Street. From a family animation entertainment to an R Rated action comedy in the same damn year, both are beloved by everyone, talk about luck right there
I remember watching this on HBO and my mom came in the living room and she got ensnared and ended up watching it with me. I love this movie. So good. Everything about this movie is amazing.
39:10 Fun fact: the screens he's looking at here, later when Emmett points them out, and the end credits, are the only parts of the movie that are stop motion animated.
I don't know if you caught it but at the end the reference to Planet Duplo references Lego's Pre-school blocks that are larger to avoid the choking hazard. I love the attention to detail in this movie. This was always one of the movies my nephew overwatched, but I didn't mind because the soundtrack slaps 😂 we still sing it to each other.
4:20 I literally went to check out a Free Guy reaction because of that “good morning…” scene & then I come back to unpause & immediately hear Andrew point out the similarities lol. 😂
You guys may not realize that the part at the end with the sister's toys was a direct reference to Duplo toys, which are basically little kid versions of Legos for kids as young as 2.
The LEGO Batman Movie takes Batman from this movie into what a lot of people say is the best examination of the character (at least, before The Batman came out) and how a socially isolated, self-absorbed, crime fighting billionaire orphan would actually behave. It’s brilliant.
Fun Fact about the Star Wars : The closure of the filmmaker and Warner Bros' deal to feature the characters with Billy Dee Williams, Keith Ferguson, and Anthony Daniels as Lego interations of their characters as hectic, as Disney announced their purchase of Lucasfilm a few weeks after the filmmakers had traveled there and received permission to include them. So had they didn't close their deal before Disney took over Lucasfilm just a few weeks later, we wouldn't have gotten the Star Wars stuff in The Lego Movie. And i honestly can't believe the last time Han, Lando, and Chewie reunited as a trio was in a freaking Lego movie! 😂
And in the second movie, they make a joke about how Marvel won't return their calls so Disney probably wouldn't have allowed Star Wars in the first movie. They might allow it now because they've worked with WB on Lego stuff since then and Universal has the movie rights now
Being as someone who played with Lego throughout my childhood and teen years. I saw more than just a nostalgia trip when seeing several iconic sets and original creations. It's become a journey into seeing a story being told through the perspective of unique characters. That reveal near the end was also interesting. All this time... The events were all played out through a young boy's imagination in his dad's basement. Interestingly, those Lego modular building sets. The Palace Cinema and Pet Shop are the notable two in that scene I personally own.
One of the best references to the fans is 43:26 all the videos were from the oldest days of TH-cam when people made Lego stop motion animation, the oldest one was a mysterious brick movie.
I'm pretty sure they asked fans to submit their own stop motion shorts of characters turning regular items into robots. Like a firetruck into a robot. Then they chose a few of them and included them in the film
As a huge Lego fan, this was my most anticipated movie of all time back when it came out and it’s still one of my favorite movies of all time. I love going back and watching this at least once a year
One summer, my son and his best friend built "Lego Worlds" all over his bedroom floor!!! Lights, too! They played and built stuff everyday!!! One of his best summers!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I always cry at the part where Will Ferrell realizes that he's the bad guy in his son's game, and that Emmet's speech to Lord Business is his son telling it to him. God, the feels.
I saw this movie in theaters when it first came out. I had never been so moved by a story before. Now that I'm older, I get to appreciate this thing from a technical perspective as well, and it is brilliant. Genuinely one of my favorite films.
When i was about 10 years old during the hype of this movie, i was a huge Lego buff. I have a collections of Lego City, Lego Legends Of Chima, Lego Ninjago, Lego Technic, Lego Creator, and others so you can just tell how much this movie means to me. It's one of few animated movies that i watched till this day even when i don't play with Legos that often these days but damn, The Lego Movie just aged so well, i can't believe it's been 10 years since the movie first came out
Aw this is a GREAT movie to have nostalgia for. It HAS aged well and it’s so stylized, I have a hard time seeing it age at all. Maybe the father & son won’t look modern someday. That’s all I can think of.
Greg I always love what you promote on the channel, and This definitely caught my eye! Just ordered my first batch! Even took the survey And mentioned where I learned it from! Thank you!!!
That was a hilarious watchalong with you two! THANKS for that. This wee gem is beautifully fresh now, it was even more jaw-droppingly fresher-er-er in 2014. Lord and Miller already hit it out of the park 2 years before with their surprise hit, 21 Jump Street, and then again with 22 Jump Street; a winning trifecta! I still lament their SOLO movie that could have been if Disney didn't lose confidence and fire them(!).
I believe you guys got it, but the entire movie was the kid imagination telling a story, but what I think you guys missed was the reason the dad didn't want him playing with the Lego was because he in an architect and uses the Lego as a visual representation of his work so the kid playing with it mess everything up and was so strict on things being out of place hence "president business"
What a great movie! Such a good message for kids to be themselves, but also parents to encourage and play more with their kids! Great reaction guys! 💜💜💜
It’s really cool because everything is possible to build with real legos in this movie and you can actually see the item numbers on the pieces when Emmit gains his building skills.
I'm always bummed that The Lego Movie wasn't at least nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards. Before the whole "Barbie robbed for Best Director and Best Actress nomination", there was The Lego Movie. And boy, I still remember the protests when the nominations were announced 😅 At least the song was nominated and I remember seeing the Oscar performance of that song with Will Arnett cosplaying as Batman and The Roots' Questlove playing the drums and the dancers gave away Lego Oscars to the audience, that was quite a highlight
Fun Fact : Eventhough Warner Bros owns the rights to DC and Harry Potter, the producer still had to approach their creatives (in the case of Batman, it's Christopher Nolan who just wrapped up The Dark Knight Trilogy and Zack Snyder who was still in production of Man Of Steel at the time. Yes, you heard me, they approached Nolan to pitch Lego Batman lol) to pitched The Lego Movie filmmakers' ideas in using the characters for the movie to seek their approval. So yeah, getting the character rights to use in The Lego Movie especially the ones that are still owned by Warner Bros. seemed complicated than i thought
Fun fact: Liam Neason insisted on recording the lines for bad/good cop at the same time instead of doing it separately. As you can see, he does it flawlessly ❤❤❤
They made a new animation and rendering software for the Lego movies that interfaces with the official Lego Design Studio. They had actual lego designers design all the sets and then animators used the sets to animate the film.. which is also specifically rendered to look like stop motion.
The incredible attention to detail as well as very smart, subtle jokes in this movie demands multiple viewings. Luke how all of the numbers that pop up besides the bricks are the actual serial numbers of the bricks for Lego. Also, as an adult who has not played with Legos since I was a kid, I absolutely missed the sound of bricks clacking when you piece them together. It’s so satisfying.
One of the greatest animated films of all time, and there’s absolutely no reason it shouldn’t have gotten nominated for an Oscar for best animated feature. Not to mention one of the catchiest and best songs in movie history “Everything Is Awesome”!
The reaction I didn't know I needed ❤ also Andrew my dude....gotta work on channeling your inner Tara .....it's ring the bellllllllll! Ring the bell! Lol much love 😅
They were able to have all the IP's represented as Lego has licensed them all over the years for different themes and sets. You guys missed when Wild Style and Emmet crashed through the Simpsons house on the motor bike as they were getting away from Bad Cop. All the 'vehicles' that the citizens made in the end were released as actual sets - I still have my Spaceship! Spaceship! Spaceship! built in my study, partly because it uses pieces from my childhood lego sets (that are very rarely used in current sets). It is an amazing movie, even before you get the reveal of the real world tie in. Lego Batman is just as good, and Lego Movie 2 is almost as good as well, highly recommend them both.
58:18 That is a really cool thing I always loved about this movie, it makes me disappointed that they pretty much abandoned it in the other three movies....
The animators created a library of lego piece models in CG and then built most of the characters and backgrounds using those model pieces. They then augmented that, added detail, and they 'filmed' it using stop motion as inspiration to make it look like this was made irl in stop motion.
41:23, That's a real lego Emit bouncing around, if I remember correctly, in the commentary they said they put a magnet inside the lego and had another under the table. That or they attached a string to him and bounced him around. It's been awhile since I listened to the commentary.
As for the rights, LEgo already had rights to all of the things shown in the movie, DC, Star Wars, Marvel and so on, they can use them, since they are in their Lego Forms. A loophole they took great advantage of
As far as I remember abt how they did this movie, its 3D animated but they reference the movements from real lego sets and those old lego stop motion videos on TH-cam. Its honestly shocking how they managed to animate this movie
This is always a favorite of mine to revisit. So much greatness was put into this movie, and it was definitely snubbed by the Academy for Oscars season.
Absolutely loved this movie when it first came out. You guys gotta watch the Lego Batman movie and the Lego Ninjago movie!! They’re all so good and I love them!!

Lord business cape and helmet looks like a red tie like the father tends to wear
And boy, I still remember the protests when the nominations were announced 😅
At least the song was nominated and I remember seeing the Oscar performance of that song with Will Arnett cosplaying as Batman and The Roots' Questlove playing the drums and the dancers gave away Lego Oscars to the audience, that was quite a highlight
Big Hero 6 won that year. Also a pretty good movie. They said, this (Lego Movie) is one of the best, most rewatchable movies ever.
this movie has one of the most stacked casts of all time imo
Need to Rewatch this I Remember seeing this YEARS ago
EVERYTHING IS AWESOME 🕺🕺🕺
“We got it, Batman. Thank you.” Coming from Andrew is soooo ironic!
Fun fact: Liam Neason insisted on recording the lines for bad/good cop at the same time instead of doing it separately. As you can see, he does it flawlessly ❤❤❤
How am I living in a world that this film came out 10 years ago...blows my mind how fast time goes
When I first watched this, I had NOOO idea it was this good.
And the emotional turn at the end... still makes me tear up.
One of the greatest animated films of all time, and there’s absolutely no reason it shouldn’t have gotten nominated for an Oscar for best animated feature. Not to mention one of the catchiest and best songs in movie history “Everything Is Awesome”!
This movie was so good. I really wish I would have seen it in the theater and I hope they re-release it again cuz I will definitely go and see it.
When I saw this in theaters, I LOST it during the SPACESHIP!!! moment of the film. Still as funny as hell 🤣
2:14 nice Colonel Klink impression
Awesome Video!!! I LOVE THIS MOVIE SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!

That is a really cool thing I always loved about this movie, it makes me disappointed that they pretty much abandoned it in the other three movies....
Went to buy magic mind after you said it on that live stream but I couldn’t afford it so I’m really exited to try it with your code!!!
Watching this on a 70-in screen and I can't stop looking at the perhaps, food particles and Greg's mustache and beard. 😜
Same, I kept looking down at what the hell that was
Lmao I was looking to see who else was fixated on all the beard snacks lol it’s definitely in your face on big screen TV 🤣
I think this is the one and only time Will Ferrel has made me tear up. I love how much heart there is at the core of these films ♥
You should try "Stranger Than Fiction" from 2006.
My family and I quote Unikitty's "Businessbusinessbusiness" bit an unhealthy amount
The Lego Batman Movie is even better which is wild.
I wonder if they ever got that Kragle was Krazy Glue with some of the letters missing. (And the Duplo blocks at the end are another actual product)
Now it's time for
Lego batman movie
This is my favourite movie ever, really surprised to see this reaction but LOVE IT NONETHELESS
I remember how excited i was when this came out when i was 10
I love how Chris Pratt has become the go to for normal loved stablished male animated characters voice, he is Emmet, Mario and Garfield
emmit, yes. garfield and mario, no.
@@chance757Yeah, Emmet was the only time he was loved as a voice actor. Mario was fine, but then Garfield really didn’t seem to work out for him.
10 years later and this is still one of my all time favorite films. I’d honestly put this on the level of any of Pixar or Dreamworks’ best films.
Omg!! Everything is awesome!!!! 😂😂😂
I LOVE this movie!
Watching the reaction with you guys is always fun. 💜
Ngl im hella surprised yall two never seen this!!! One of my favorite animated lego movies! This and Lego Batman 💪
I freaking love this movie, it’s such a fun movie with great humour ❤ Great reaction Greg and Andrew can’t wait Batman Lego movie !!!!!
One of my favorite animated films I've ever seen. I love Emmet.
The end credit version of everything is awesome is amazing but the other song they did Super Cool is legit A BOP. Thats my like high energy song lol
I love my Double Decker Couch set 😍
And I gifted my son Benny's Spaceship Spaceship!
"i think i got it. but just in case, tell me the whole thing again. i wasn't listening" - greg after watching any movie before 2015
This reaction is awesome!! 🎶
Favorite animated movie of all time right here!!! So glad you reacted to this!!!
I was just editing a clip related to the Lego movie from 2010 (The Adventures of Clutch Powers) and then I get the notification for this video lol
As for the rights, LEgo already had rights to all of the things shown in the movie, DC, Star Wars, Marvel and so on, they can use them, since they are in their Lego Forms. A loophole they took great advantage of
The Lego Movie is my all time favourite movie!
There's so many movies that I'm genuinely shocked you guys haven't seen yet. This was one of them
Benny is my favorite I saw it in theaters with my little brother and we still randomly shout “Spaceship”
As far as I remember abt how they did this movie, its 3D animated but they reference the movements from real lego sets and those old lego stop motion videos on TH-cam. Its honestly shocking how they managed to animate this movie
This is always a favorite of mine to revisit. So much greatness was put into this movie, and it was definitely snubbed by the Academy for Oscars season.
it’s actually one of the best movies i’ve ever seen ❤
I love how you guys are pretty much cheesin' the whole movie. 😁😁
I hope they make more Lego movies. They were all amazing!
Yes, please do the Lego Batman movie 😁
Unikitty best character in this, resonated with her a lot ❤🥹
Absolutely loved this movie when it first came out. You guys gotta watch the Lego Batman movie and the Lego Ninjago movie!! They’re all so good and I love them!!
