Once upon a time, 3 young Jewish boys started a punk band in New York. They called themselves the Beastie Boys and they quickly switched to hip hop after a couple of EPs as punk. Then, after establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with, The Beastie Boys helped launch the career of another young man by the name of LL Cool J.
If you can find the video clip of the Beastie Boys covering Run DMC's Sucka MCs on the BET Tribute to Jam Master Jay. In front of the biggest names in modern Hip Hop, they stole the show!! No joke
I'm 51, a metalhead, death metal vocalist, but was a hip hop head before a metal head. I still am a hip hop head, but, I agree. This new generation of "popular" hip hop doesn't have the soul of the ol' school. Underground/independent artists still have it. You can't go wrong with boom bap! Keep up the great work! Have really enjoyed your channel and watching your introduction to the older stuff!
Yep they played their own instruments and even sampled themselves as well as sampling all kinds of sh!t under the sun. Their music is a collage of greatness. Mega creative.
This was my antham back in the early 90s. Me and my brothers used to put on our winter hats and rap to this song in our bedroom. To catch the lyrics, we recorded this song on cassette tape on the radio then listened to it for an extended period of time. We never got all the words but it was so much fun to partialy rap along. The 90s were a glorious time to be alive.
Hands down my favourite track by them. The beat is hard AF, their lyrics and flow are tight. The incorporation of skateboarding into the music video. The way they truly do go old school style in the last verse.... It's just perfection for me. These guys have always been able to update themselves while staying true to the roots of old school hip hop with their styles and especially the fact that they work with a real DJ who is just as much a part of any song as they are.
You’re right, my man. We (Jews) do pretty much stick together. There hasn’t been a time where someone wasn’t trying to wipe us off the face of the earth.
These fuys were just better than anyone in any genre. Amazing song construction, energy and they just understood how to get everyone in any area of life to get up off their seats and just move and be happy
The live drums for the main drum beat were played by them in this song, probably by Mike D, but not the other instruments. And they sampled their own drum recording, so it isn’t played live all the way through. They just looped part of their own playing. All the other stuff is samples of recordings by other bands. The electric guitar is a sample from a Bad Brains song called Big Takeover. And the main bass loop in the breakdown sections is from Big Sur Suite by Johnny Hammond. That one has been used by a few hip hop groups, with probably the biggest one coming from the same year with Dr. Dre’s A Ni*** Wit A Gun off that first solo album where Snoop Doggie Dogg made his album debut. There’s one part that I suspect might be MCA playing bass, but I don’t think anyone ever confirmed it. After they say “I’d like to ask ya how ya like the feel of the bass in ya face in the crowd” at around 9:55 here and it switches to something that sounds like it could be a very distorted bass guitar that is being cut in and out with a switch. They show a switch on a DJ mixer being used there. If this is from someone else’s record then I don’t think anyone has ever found the record it’s from. But to me that sounds like MCA’s bass playing. The cutting in and out with a switch could’ve been done later while sampling their own recording, or could’ve been done live on the bass guitar itself. Given that part has been processed afterwards so it is switched out of phase on one channel (which makes it come from behind you when played through a Dolby Surround processor) it is also possible the switching was done afterwards.
You want see them play their instruments watch the video for "Gratitude" they are also showing love and respect to Pink Floyd's 1972 video "Echoes part 1" that was filmed in Pompeii (also a must watch)
I'll throw some recommendations for my favorites. Top pick would be either Root Down or Flute Loop. - Egg Man - High Plans Drifter - Slow Ride - Girls - Fight For Your Right - Sure Shot - Tough Guy (but, being a throwback to their hardcore roots, it's less than a minute long so listen in addition to another song) - B-Boys makin with the freak freak - Root Down - Sabotage - Get It Together (w/ q-tip of tribe) - Flute Loop - The Scoop - Bodhisattva vow - Jimmy James - Professor Booty - Super Disco Breakin - Intergalactic
Saw these guys a bunch. Best show was in a Manhattan club for the Check Your Head tour. Spent a large portion of the time on top of the crowd crowd-surfing. Had a blast and the boys sounded amazing.
They started as hardcore punk band. At some point they switched to rapping. Eventually they started playing hardcore punk songs again, too. This song you just reacted to is the lead single off their third album, Check Your Head. It is the first album where they also started putting punk songs back in, starting with Time For Livin’ on this album. There’s also a song called Gratitude on it that is more like hard rock. And starting on the tour for this album they brought out instruments and played their punk and rock stuff live. I caught that tour in Vancouver, which was awesome. For the following album they were one of the main bands that year for the Lollapalooza touring festival. May have even been the headlining band, but I forget. That show was awesome, too.
Dr Dre Dj’d for them as well as DJ Hurricane and DJ Mario. In the later days of MCA’s life ( RIP ), he did the sampling especially for Paul’s Boutique. IMO the BEST hip hop drop EVER! Playing the bones! Best game ever besides spades!
Bro, I’m a 55 year old white rock and roll musician and I still listen to hip hop. Here’s a secret: you don’t really change when you get older. You’re still the same you. If people didn’t treat you differently, you’d forget you’re old.

Your right. Haven’t been able to listen to new music in all genres for years. Partly aging. Partly I don’t enjoy or benefit from the frequency they are on. I hope the next generation takes music and art seriously and or tge gatekeepers let real art have a chance.

I will be 80 years old still rocking Rap, death core, 80’s pop… whatever I want . My play list is confusing to some people. I don’t pick a genre! It is all whatever I feel on a given day.
Mother fluffer! I just picked up on something that I never noticed before. I was listening to the Beasties in the 80's when License to Ill dropped. I was around 8 years old. Probably 12 years old when CYH came out....I'm giving that information to lead into this....I was maybe 17 when Korn released their first album which led to Limp Bizkit. In my late teens I was a big fan of the Nu Metal bands and for a few years I thought Fred Durst was so cool. But @ 7:36 when MCA is on, his movements triggered something in my brain that felt very familiar. It only took a couple seconds until it dawned on me. Fred Durst completely stole MCA's mannerisms as he raps. He just completely jacked MCA's swag. Holy ish! I dont know how I never caught that until nearly 30 years later. My love for Nu metal faded very fast but wtf.....What a fraud Fred Durst is!

I think this is the one they put a HUGE roll of cardboard extending from Mike D's Bass drum To get that BOOOM! Apparently they nicked the idea from Led Zeppelin
So What'cha Want they did that, you can find the isolated tracks on youtube and hear each instrument separately. The song is a cover of I've Been Watching You(1975) by Southside Movement. has to be the 1975 version not 1973 version.
@@anthonyv6962 Cool... According to Mike and Ad Rock, they were going to sample Southside, but then just went "Hey, we could just BITE this and play it ourselves"

Loved these guys back in the day! Was lucky enough to see them in concert in Hawaii in the mid 90's. They absolutely rocked it!
You know how in movies, people would rap on the street or breakdance in the park. That was real.
I saw them in 1993 . They were touring this record. They played at a place that used to be a skating rink in Glen Burnie Maryland. Phenomenal show.
Gratitude is my favorite of their songs.. and it's pretty different for them :)
