Why People HATE the NEW 2024 Toyota Tacoma

  • Why do people HATE the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma? I mean it looks cool... and has great horsepower and torque figures. What's to dislike beyond their faulty transmissions, terrible quality control, lackluster fit and finish, 4 cylinder engines and astronomical price tags? The new 2022 and up Tundra and Mexico-built Tacomas have been a pretty big disappointment for Toyota enthusiasts. Toyota needs to make some huge changes, and fast. Do you think they will? What does Toyota need to do specifically to recover from these two huge fails? The new 2024 Land Cruiser is already experiencing some serious engine and tech problems around the globe. Will the new 6th gen 2025 Toyota 4Runner be next? I mean, outside of it being built in Japan.... it will share all the same underpinnings as the new 4th gen Tacoma here. Which isn't good. I hope Toyota doesn't tarnish the 4Runner nameplate too.
Let me know your thoughts. Would you buy a 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro or Trailhunter if it came with a $10k discount like the Tundra has now? Or is that still too much money for these 4 cylinder hybrid platforms?
Thanks for watching as always, if you enjoy this type of content, please consider Liking and Subscribing... your support means a lot and it doesn't go unnoticed. Thank you!

50 grand for a 4 cylinder engine regardless if it has turbos is completely ridiculous turbochargers are going to ruin that small engine over time and in the long run you're going to end up paying out of your you know what. Usually these things will break down just slightly right after the warranty. And then you're screwed. You gotta keep making V8 pay the government fine because in the long run if people get what they want in this country they'll sell enough of those V8 trucks and they'll be able to pay the fine. These Japanese companies don't get it and don't give what the American people want then just don't make a product at all. Humans will survive without Toyota trucks.

The world is full of turbo diesels running for decades without significant trouble. It just depends how well implemented they are, and whether you avoid known ways to kill them. Basically don't run them hard when they are stone cold, or switch them off when they are glowing. Modern engines, like the Chevy 2.7T take care of the hot shutdown with separate cooling and lubrication which stays on even after switching the engine off. Starting your car in North Dakota on a cold winter day and immediately revving it hard will also result in turbo failure. 200,000rpm and oil like treacle don't mix well.

As a three time previous Taco owner fanboy myself (most recently a '19 TRD-OR), Toyota successfully sold me on a Ranger Raptor....it was cheaper, it has a V6, it has a usable rear seat, has real bump stops, both front and rear lockers, live shocks, no stupid "port add-on's", and it doesn't look like it's dented under the side rear view mirrors. If I wouldn't have gotten a Raptor slightly under MSRP, then a ZR2/AT4X wouldn't been my next choice. Shocking that both GM and Ford have more compelling products at lower price points. Toyota is coasting an blind brand loyalty, but that only goes so far...

All valid points, but another sinful blight against today’s Toyota is their allocation-only sales model. They milked the COVID shortages as long as they could (to maximize $$), they’ve kept inventory levels low as long as they could (to maximize $$), and still they have the audacity to decide **for us** which vehicles get tossed our way, if they feel like it. No special orders, no requests, just take what WE give you and say thank you. Huh?? Those trucks and everything else they try to force-feed us the customers can sit there and rot.

3.) the Ranger and S-10 once ruled this segment until they let the Tacoma take it over - this is a huge mistake that will allow the Ranger, Colorado, and Frontier back into the race. That means they will double down on advertising and internet bots to sway people’s perception and negative press about Toyota. Toyota is using bots on TH-cam right now to convince people they are wrong about the brand.

    Likes:
    - Good power. Towed a 18 foot boat with it. Handled it well.
    - fancy features. That's a like and dislike. Would rather my truck be simple.
    - looks!
    - bright headlights? Idk I'm really digging for Likes now.
    - mostly comfortable.
    Dislikes:
    - when the engine is first started, there was a persistent squeak which sounded like it was from the drive belt. Short, but it would squeak once a minute. It would go away after the engine was warm.
    - after driving 800 miles straight, the engine temp was above the centerline. Don't know what that's about.
    - transmission felt like it was jerking back and forth when in heavy traffic (about 10 mph on and off).
    - engine is whiny, grumbly. Does not instill confidence.
    - shaky at low speeds.

Until you own a new Tacoma and live with it everyday you really are nothing but a bystander speculating on it.
The fact is people have been complaining about every new change on cars/trucks for as long as I can remember. People complained about going from bias ply tires to radials, from points to electronic ignition, manual transmissions to automatics, drum brakes to disc brakes, vacuum/electrical engine controls to computer controls, push rods to overhead cams, V8 to V6s, steel bumpers to body concealed bumpers, incandescent lights to halogen lights, and list goes on and on. Really you’re just the current generation complaining about this or that and “if they only hadn’t changed this”. The good thing is you’re monetizing it and earning some cash off it.
I’m sure over time you will warm up to your twin turbo hybrid Sequoia with the dreaded 3.5 V6.
Finally, the 5.7 V8 had its share of early problems and Toyota did what Toyota does and worked through the issues.

What's going to happen to that secondary market with hybrid platforms? Most consumers seeking a used Tacoma or Tundra would probably find it prohibitive to repair these platforms, especially to obtain new hybrid batteries. I think this is a whole lot of "happy horse [blank]" projections by Toyota and other OEMs. It's planned obsolescence as you've said in the past, which I think will do long-term damage. And those panel gaps are outrageous. I remember the fender (over the right rear wheel well) on one of the Toyota trucks you showed in an earlier video. It appeared to have little bumps throughout. We live in a throw away society now, the corporate business model is profits above anything. Its all about quarterly profits for investors. I drove the wheels off of that thing, and it never gave me a minutes trouble....
I like simple, so my replacement search found a low mile 2015 access cab, 2wd 4cyl - 5 speed Tacoma....
It's the last year of the 2nd generation, and also the last year that you could get a 4cyl - 5speed.... Also the last of the 15" wheel and a low bed-side height....
You can reach in the bed to get a shovel without needing a step ladder, and I get to pick the gear I want..... I love it, and it gets 25mpg.....
Regardless of 4wd or not, all trucks anymore have these skyscraper bed-heights, that you can't even work out of.... My 2010 5.7 Tundra is rock solid, but has that limitation....
I knew the whole turbo /or hybrid thing, and increasing complexity, was going to be a step backward for their trucks.....
I retired from being a Tool and Die Maker with Toyota for 26 years, and it's rather heartbreaking to see their quality going downhill.... 😑

Some middle management clown thought this pricing up and Toyota exces were seeing $$$$ signs. Both of these trucks have been major flops. They are sitting on the new 4Runner cuz they know it's gonna be strike number three when that over priced turd hits the showroom. Just because Toyota can produce 250k units per year doesn't mean they can sell them. As a long time Toyota fanboy I am "meh" about the brand now. Toyota Tacoma Fails as listed: catastrophic failure on Auto/Manual Transmissions and over heating on Automatic Transmissions (my co-worker has experienced this the first 2 months of ownership), suspension top hat failing and breaking through to the frame/body, CV axles snapping on light duty off roading, transfer cases failing, whining and failing rear differential, interior climate controls/knobs breaking, infotainment screen breaking or needing rebooted after a couple of months, interior gloveboxes rattling and center console is flimsy, fit and finish is very cheap plastic and thin. A few engine problems have been happening like fail turbos or an issue with check engine light coming on (unknown’s at this time I’ll keep reading the forums). Way overpriced MSRP for a Mexico made low quality and problematic issues. Toyota also recommends changing the spark plugs every 40K miles on the new turbo engines, the cost to replace the spark plugs is close to $1,000. This truck hasn’t been out very long and the list of problems and added maintenance just keeps going up and up. Toyota, you really failed big time.
