I bought a 2010 FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Ed. brand new. I daily drove it for 10 years, racked up 110,000 miles. Parked it for 18 months and then gave it to my son when he turned 16. Now he is in his first year of college and still loves it!
As a former FJ Cruiser owner I can tell you: - Prepare for windshield replacements if you drive on the highway often (windshield is nearly vertical) - Terrible gas mileage especially with any kind of lift or larger tires (~200 miles per tank...) - Will go ANYWHERE as long as ground clearance is not an issue - People will ask about the 3 windshield wipers when they notice them - As with most Toyota's of this era, self done oil changes are very easy - Recalibrating the compass is very fun & onlookers will think you're crazy (I did it in a Costco parking lot) - The rear hatch opens sideways (not up) so access can be limited if there is a car parked behind it - These WILL be future classics if in good condition (My guess is in 10+ years over $50k for low mileage & good service history) Great video as always, Tyler!
Disagree on the lift back. All doors on verticle hinges. I've got no patience for lifting the beeping back wall of a truck over my head... not with two armfulls of stuff. Not repeatedly.
My '08 FJ is @ 216k miles. Was recently looking at new trucks like Sierra Denali, Tundra, and F-150's and after weeks of research, I have decided to just drive the FJ Cruiser until hell freezes over....
I work part time in the Middle East and you can still buy a brand new FJ Cruiser. A friend of mine has a new one and Toyota didn't change or update anything on it.
I’m from the middle east and i own a 2020 fj cruiser fully loaded it comes with crawl control A trac and diff lock the thing is a beast off road and not to forget to mention that it has double fuel tanks that adds up to 160 liters and can go up to 1400km on each fill up , it has 200,000 km and still feels new its truly an amazing vehicle . sadly it was discontinued in late 2023 .
You know Toyota’s are great because when you see videos of the middle east they always are driving them in sand and terrible conditions. Bought for a reason!

I have been waiting for the day that an FJ is added to the Hoovie fleet. I've had mine for 10 years as a daily driver and cannot fault it. 170,000km (Australia) and everything is still original.
That was as sick as diddy, there's no humor in a 7 year old boy being passed around, or the other minors, woman, and men. I doubt they would find any humor in the Wizard's joke. It's one thing to make a joke about like in the christine video where he said he'll need to grease his shaft, but when it comes to people being victimised like in this diddy case, that's just sick.

Sensors, wheel bearings, timing cover leaks, and huge blindspots are about the only issues besides regular maintenance. Hoovie finally got something reliable 😂
Have you sat in one? Worst visibility of any suv ever! Literally feels like you're in a 2 person submarine! But then again I drive Land Rovers that have the best visibility of any SUV. Even the 4 runner feels colostraphobic
I proudly own a 2011 voodoo blue, and it’s never let me down whether on or off road. The FJ Cruiser was the 2004 super cool concept car that was built in the Japanese HINO factory (yep the truck company). The FJ Cruiser is just built reliable (no squeaks or rattles) and is a comfortable cruiser for gravel roads, tar-seal, beach or off road trails. My advice is to change the bulbs for LED, replace all fluids regularly then enjoy the point and shoot reliability of this fun iconic car.
I off road an FJ here in the UK and i can tell you iv had mine in some very crazy places and its never let me down. They really are tough reliable vehicles. Oh and mine has 340,000 miles on it from new!!!
I'd imagine that's a pretty big vehicle even for the countryside? One of the kids I grew up with in the neighborhood has one... I still think it's pretty large even in spacious American suburbs... Even though I eventually did the 'murican thing and bought a half ton pickup myself, I always wanted an FJ!
@@Corkoth55 I've got a Prado j150 on UK roads and it's fine, even down the very tight, narrow lanes in Cornwall. I won't be selling anytime soon, love it.
My buddy from Purdue bought a yellow 2007 FJ when he was there, to replace his dodge challenger which broke down in 2 months, all he needed to do was an oil change and replacing brake pads. Unfortunately the FJ was T-boned last year and got totaled, but luckily nobody got hurt. I guess the only way to take a FJ off the road is traffic accident...
That’s why I bought a 23’ 4Runner. It basically has what 15 year old drivetrain. Just enough modern convinces, yet retains what made Toyotas so reliable. I go once a year to get it Krown’d (undercoated) so hopefully the frame and body will last me a long time in the salt belt.
Sadly my 2020 Tundra may be my last Toyota. Wanted to get one of the last bulletproof 5.7L and now your options are a somehow worse version of the Ecoboost or one coupled with a big battery for even more money.
@@randyparmesan1383 There's never been any bottom end issues with the 5.7L. the only problem it ever has is a cam tower gasket leaking after about 160k miles.
Yup we just bought the 2024 limited. Last year before the totally ruin it with the new turbos. Toyota has become a pathetic shell of its past. It'll likely be the last Toyota I ever buy.
Your title is interesting given that this FJ is the same underneath as the 2010-2024 4runner. It is also the biggest reason that generation sold so well being so ancient. They just don't die.
The 4Runner is an ancient (good) design at the end of its lifespan. That, the 2nd gen tundra/sequoia, 200 series LC, and this are the last of the good ones.
I kinda skipped through the video. He says how many miles are on this FJ a lot, but I didn't hear any real info about what Toyota is doing wrong now aside from the engine recall.
@@kevinstrident style/emissions/performance/tech over reliability. Going from larger engines way below their power handing threshold to smaller engines with forced induction is not going to work out.
@@kftc1980 I don't think these are the engines that Toyota wants to make or that customers want to buy. Most of this is driven by government mandates to magically make engines more efficient while also mandated more and heavier safety systems.
@@kevinstrident yes there are external factors. Also companies tend to eventually stray from their original values after enough generations. It was good while it lasted.
Please more content like this! I would absolutely love to see more interesting Toyotas and Japanese cars in general. All the European cars has me really burnt out. I'm a diehard Toyota guy, your 3rd gen Camry video years back is was introduced me to your channel. I have a 3rd gen Camry wagon with 335k miles.
When the FJ Cruiser first came out Toyota brought a bunch of them out to the Cal4Wheel off-road event near Barstow, High Desert Safari, and let people drive them on some of the trails. They actually performed quite well. Most people that bought them and started doing tougher trails swapped in a solid axle up front in place of the IFS.
Toyota will never make another motor as reliable as the 1GR-FE. I used to commute from Richmond, VA to Washington, DC about 15 days a month. I was the second owner, and by the time I traded it in for my 4Runner it had wracked up over 400,00 miles. Unfortunately, with many Toyota trucks, rust will mechanically total them, these included.
Bought one brand new in 2011. 166,000 and going. I live in the rust belt, and already priced out a new frame when it let's go. Wouldn't/won't get rid of her. She's not the prettiest from all angles, only 1 or 2. But with how reliable and dependable She's been, she's the best vehicle I've had.
I am a pre-owned dealer and I used to get all the trades from a small local Dodge-Jeep dealer . I got a one owner 07 FJ with 297k miles on it in a package deal of their 😮trades . I always thought that they were fugly and I still do but I just sold it after 12 years and 125k miles with a total of 425k and I got $300 more than I paid . I found out early on while asking about its excellent reliability , that these were produced in the Hino plant along side the heavy trucks . They are just unbelievable vehicles . I got 15 mpg around town and 18 highway . I am missing it enough that I’m hunting another one .
A friend rented a brand new 2024 Tundra Limited, we used it for 7 days. 0n the last day before returning it, it was in limp mode and misfiring non stop. We never abused the Truck. Toyota's new motor in the Tundra and other trucks are complete garbage.
@fortheloveofnoise just for my knowledge do you know about when Toyota really started going to shit I know 07 to about 12 is ok. I buy alot at auction I'm just curious
I recently dumped both of my BMWs and got a 2023 4Runner. 1 year in and I am incredibly pleased with my decision. It’s built like a tank and rides very comfortably.
It's like the automotive industry stopped caring about the desirability of reliability and affordable upkeep. "Lease and leave" seems to have contributed a lot to that. Especially on the higher end. Depreciation is steep because upkeep after warranty is insanely high. Now it's hitting the middle tier as well. EV's may help change that. A lot less to go wrong.
They’re transitioning their entire fleet to a hybrid lineup, likely because that’s what the large portion of their consumer base wants, and also regulators. They’ll figure the turbos out soon
I have a 2016 Touareg and a 2013 FJ cruiser. The FJ looks bigger sitting next to it. But the VW is bigger in almost ever dimension. Touareg is 5" longer, 1" wider, but the roof is 4" lower and that makes it look smaller. A 4 door land rover defender or Jeep is about the same size as an FJ. FJ looks huge because it was designed by someone who played with Lego in the 80s, probably...
I have a 2013 prius original battery and engine with 580,000 miles. Zero problems. Daily driver as a courier. Fixing to get new tires because my tires have 150,000 miles on them. Michelin and Toyota...quality.
@chrisragone8785 I don't believe it either. Michelin Defenders. Maybe it's because of highway miles. They aren't cheap. They have an 80,000 mile warranty. I'm rolling on them now. It might not be quite 150k. But it is substantially more than 100k. At least 140k seriously. I'm amazed. I also can't believe how good this Prius is. Drove it 300 miles today.
@@chrisragone8785yeah, that is down to the wire… its possible they do but only because this person is an idiot. Like at that point you are actually putting people’s lives at risk
EXACTLY why I decided to grab my 4Runner limited last year ( currently at 12,600 miles ). I don’t care that 6 times over the past year there’s been people trying to get in mine because they also have a frost white metallic Limited. I really liked the updated look of the new ones. But I pulled the trigger on the 5th Gen when I heard about them dropping the V6. Especially when dropping it only gained a couple MPG’s. Hell my thinking said that a simple transmission and gearing upgrade would’ve done just as well if not better.
I agree, CW just guessing and shooting parts cannon at this poor guy expense. Also did you catch O2 sensor replacement cost? $360 for two and $240 for labor. Ouch
I have a 06 Land Cruiser with 200k miles and will be replacing the timing belt soon (second time, every 90-100k). It’s a $2k job at the dealer including a new water pump, coolant flush etc. People complain about timing belts, but I disagree. Every 100k miles I know I have a new timing situation that works perfectly, a new water pump and coolant and a decent engine check. Good for another 100k. Anyone with a timing chain can’t say the same thing. They stretch, chain tensioners and guides fail water pumps fail, and you just don’t know. Timing belts are not bad imo.
@@aged7968 YEP AND people dont realize thats partly why the 2UZ is so reliable. It gets coolant parts replaced on an internval as well. Most do the thermostat and coolant flush with timing job. Yep Ive seen and experienced timing chain guides fail because of Fram cheap oil filters. No such worry with belts.
As a former owner of the same year, same color, FJ Cruiser the frame likes to split around the front shock mounts on a 2007. It's corrected on later year models but, from 2007-2009 there's a recall that needs to be done to add a brace so that metal doesn't crack. The frame is from a Land Cruiser Prada, and if the car was ever in the North East, the frames love to rot out on them. They also like to develop Torque Shudder. I also recommend installing a back-up camera because reversing them or parallel parking them is a giant pain.
I had a manual 2009 Scion XB. Gave it to my 16 year old and it’s at 210,000 miles now. Full Japan import and extremely well built. Only complaint is that it needs the 6 speed from the TC.
🙏🏻 Don't go aftermarket axles!!!🙏🏻 Just bought an FJ, found torn inner boots like you, & have been reading on the forums that aftermarket axles fail extremely often. Better to regrease and reboot your originals 👍🏻
Love that you got an FJ. I have a 2013 Trail Teams I bought new. The only major issue with these and all Toyota trucks of the era is frame rust if you live in the North East. Fluid film or something similar is very much worth doing.
I lived in Japan for a year and can attest to them having a higher degree of pride in workmanship, on average, compared to the US or Canada. Their culture rewards work sacrifices and excellence more than ours does. The quality of products usually reflects as much. The quality of Japanese goods went down when trade agreements forced them to move various production lines out of Japan.
We've been driving Acuras since 2012. Mine was actually built in Japan (TSX SportWagon). Also have 2 RDXs. They haven't given me a reason to switch automakers yet.
I have 2 Mazdas made both built in Hiroshima. The build quality is definitely better than Honda or Toyota's US made stuff. It's not a HUGE difference (Honda and Toyota still have decent build quality and QC standards), but the material choice alone is absolutely superior. And I don't think it's so much that their work culture rewards sacrifices and excellence, so much that it punishes a LACK of sacrifice and excellence. From what I've heard, their work culture is more toxic than even here in the US.
@@ashishpatel350 I wouldn't call it TRASH. Honda and Toyota's American made stuff is still built better than anything from the domestic or Korean manufacturers. It's just not as good as it used to be. Keep in mind the Japanese cars that people rave about for reliability have been built in the US since the late 80's.
Just got back from Moab, UT (9/23-9-28). 1423 miles round trip. 2008 (FJ Crawler edition) performed perfectly traveling from PHX to Moab. No complaints at all. MPG is expected: 12 - 13 with ARB roof-rack, bumper, IPF rack lights, skids, etc.
Hoovie, thank you for this video. I have a 2008 FJ with 113,000 miles on it, not one single door ding, she is an absolute dream and flawless. Black roof and silver. I brought a 2000 LS400 last year just because I'd always wanted one and everything, I mean everything still works . I think I'll be keeping it for a while :)
2024 JD Power Dependability study contradicts the title to hoovies video. They may have recalled 100k vehicles, but recalls are actually a good thing because they have recognized the issue and are taking action. I can't count the times a company like GM has knowingly let an issue go for years and has to eventually be sued before they will do anything. I've owned 2 FJ's and countless other new and old Toyotas, still same quality.
Hi Hoovie! In case you don't know - the audio in Car Wizard's office was surely fucked up by ultrasonic cleaning (which was obviously running in the shop close enough to the office). That's a thing you can sort of control - ask if it's running and ask to pause it while you're recording (it's OK to stop and resume ultrasonic cleaning). Thanks for the videos!
5:24 Wow! Only $323,000 for a car with only 323 miles (0:40) on it! What a SMOKING deal for a car with 323 thousand horsepower and 32.3 foot pounds of torque that's only 323 inches long!😂

Thought this looked like a cute retro land cruiser, and wondered why had never seen them in the UK. Then saw Wizard stood at the open bonnet, realised it's absolutely mahoosive, and everything made sense 😂
I always wanted one just like that. The color combo was my favorite. When they turn up at local dealerships, they get scooped up quick. I'm sure you can fix and enjoy for a while then auction and get back what you have into it. Great video, thanks for two in one week.
To give Toyota some credit, the issue with the new Tundra engine is not necessarily a design issue. The issue is metal shavings from the manufacturing process were not getting fully cleaned out. I’m sure besides that issue, those engines will be fine.
@@portermcsorley Maybe, maybe not--only time will tell. But I have doubts, as Toyota in all likelihood was not honest about the problem being "machining bits" from the production process, as the affected engines were made in multiple plants around the world (and thus it's very hard to believe no one in many years noticed the problem, or that they use the exact same process in all their plants to cause the problem). Cheap quality parts is the more likely culprit.
I still wish I had picked up the 1973 FJ40 my neighbor had for sale some years ago. Brilliant vehicle. Saw the LC500 at an auto show the other day. Would love that car. Love the Gilligan's Island cast in the background.
The FJ Cruiser stopped production in December, 2022, the last market they were sold was in the Middle East. All production was in Japan by Hino Motors, though it stopped sales in Japan in 2018 and the last 4 years were entirely exported to the Middle East.
Also the only county out of middle east where you could buy a 2023 FJ cruiser was here in Colombia South America, a friend of mine bought one final edition 2023.
Wizard just taught me a new trick on how to diagnose bad ball joints! I didn't know that you heard creaking in the vehicle like that when you rock it back and forth that it's a sign of bad ball joints. I'm hearing that on my '05 CR-V and I actually did just have the ball joints replaced as did the previous owner before me, and I do notice that noise sometimes when I get in and out of the car. I suppose it could be bushings or worn out coil springs as well. I'm planning on replacing all that stuff anyways so I guess I'll find out soon.
I understand wizards aversion to aftermarket parts, but there is no way on gods green earth I would've put OEM cam and lifters back in that in hellcat. Plus, you've got the damn thing apart... Put a slightly hotter cam in and make even more power. It's literally a no-brainer.
Amazing amount of Upgrade Parts for the 07 FJ. Crazy amounts. Imu suppression... Oh man.. I can't wait to see what you got planned for the old FJ Tyler!
‘95 to ‘05 is the golden era for Toyota’s. Best cars ever. Tech was just good enough for nice reliable EFI and minimal gadgets, and the overzealous safety and emmisions regulations hadn’t come in yet. I counted up the other day, currently have 13 Toyota vehicles from that era.
One thing about those axles. If they're anything like the Land Cruiser 100, go OEM. My FJ doesn't need them thank goodness but my LX470 did and the previous owner but those Cardone's (Cardan?) on there and it drove like crap. I swapped them out with OEM parts and the truck drives like a dream!
I have a 2002 Land Cruiser with 325,000 miles on it. The only real 'parts' I have replaced are the rear differential (only because I blew a radiator hose and had a company tow my car to my repair shop and the driver drug my Land Cruiser breaking the Rear Diff) I also replaced is my alternator. Right now it runs great but I do have a A/C issue. Overall - cheapest car I have ever owned
I bought a brand new 2022 Toyota Tacoma SR5 V6 4 door model in Barcelona red (during covid, I totally lucked out) it was made in Mexico and I love it. I have had no problems with it and my 2022 Tacoma runs great.
It's kinda sad that Toyotas now are not seen as economic cars in Europe, they are seen as more luxurious car, literally competing with Audi and VW. Nowadays it's Daihatsu, Suzuki or Dachia. Toyotas got so popular in EU due to it's affordability and efficiency, right now a new Yaris costs like at least 30k - 50k euros depending on options. You are super lucky to buy a Yaris that is above 2015 with low milage that costs under 10k
In 2010/11 Toyota could not give them away. I worked for Toyota dealership and you could have gotten 10 to 15 k off on one. Now they selling for crazy money😂
I owned a 2007 FJ Cruiser the exact same color up until 2 years ago. Had to trade it in because it did not work with our growing family any more. 6 speed manual with a full time transfer case. It was an absolute tank.
I'm part of a veteran offroad group and I am pretty heavily involved in checking out vehicles. My recommendation is ball joints, shocks, brake overhaul, cv axles and filters. Transmissions on some.
Obviously used trucks offroad can fail at many other points; however, hitting all of these points will eliminate a lot you'll be surprised and makes trail fixes easier to isolate.
Hoovie, you didnt get the Toyota recall right. Its not because the motors are "crapping out..." its because debris during the manufacturing process got trapped into many motors and wasnt detected until owners had motors dying.

- Terrible gas mileage especially with any kind of lift or larger tires (~200 miles per tank...)
- Will go ANYWHERE as long as ground clearance is not an issue
- People will ask about the 3 windshield wipers when they notice them
- As with most Toyota's of this era, self done oil changes are very easy
- Recalibrating the compass is very fun & onlookers will think you're crazy (I did it in a Costco parking lot)
- The rear hatch opens sideways (not up) so access can be limited if there is a car parked behind it
- These WILL be future classics if in good condition (My guess is in 10+ years over $50k for low mileage & good service history)

Toyota will fix it, give it time. The 2.5L engined crossovers, minivans and cars are pretty reliable. They need to figure out the turbo vehicles.

Every 100k miles I know I have a new timing situation that works perfectly, a new water pump and coolant and a decent engine check. Good for another 100k. As a former owner of the same year, same color, FJ Cruiser the frame likes to split around the front shock mounts on a 2007. It's corrected on later year models but, from 2007-2009 there's a recall that needs to be done to add a brace so that metal doesn't crack.
To give Toyota some credit, the issue with the new Tundra engine is not necessarily a design issue. The issue is metal shavings from the manufacturing process were not getting fully cleaned out. I’m sure besides that issue, those engines will be fine.

@@RK-db4oq well, considering Toyota is recalling the affected engines, does it really matter? The issue was found and resolved. Period.
@@portermcsorley Maybe, maybe not--only time will tell. Cheap quality parts is the more likely culprit.

Agreed. How many have a telescoping steering columns.
It's like that when it comes to most car brands really, seems like everything went bad around the late 2010's
These were never made or sold on South America, but it was produced until 2022 on the middle east.
I’ve got a 03 tundra I’ve had it 20 years and it takes everything I throw at it best truck I’ve ever owned
Toyotas got so popular in EU due to it's affordability and efficiency,
right now a new Yaris costs like at least 30k - 50k euros depending on options. You are super lucky to buy a Yaris that is above 2015 with low milage that costs under 10k
Just bought a mint echofor$500
You and car wizard constantly crack me up
In 2010/11 Toyota could not give them away.
