    Have to point out that Heavenly Guardian is called Legend of Sayuki here in Europe just so anyone interested has an easier time finding it.

    In the vain of Ninja Ryukenden 3, I'd suggest checking out "Mad City" which is the Japanese version of Adventures of Bayou Billy for the Famicom.
    It's way less difficult and more reasonably balanced. Enemies take fewer hits and driving stages aren't as brutal.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Darkbeat [Try4ce] Neat! I've always had a strange compulsion to play Bayou Billy, I mean it's always just sitting there among the cheap common carts in retro stores...

    I never understood during localization why they made Ninja Gaiden 3 so much more difficult, especially when it was thought it the US didn't like more difficult games.

    Great video! I'd never heard of either Heavenly Guardian or Under Defeat. I'll have to add those two to my wanted list. Still trying to find a good deal for Ninja Gaiden III. And this really made me want to sit down and actually play through my copy of Castlevania: LoD.

  • @ImportGamingFTW
    @ImportGamingFTW 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I'm liking this new series. Under Defeat HD is a great game that I was surprised to see get a release outside of Japan. Even more surprising is that shmups like that and Death Smiles are still so cheap, despite being very niche titles whose values you'd think would skyrocket due to scarcity. I always passed on Heavenly Guardian, and had no idea about the backstory or even what kind of game it was. I think I was turned off by the cover art, honestly, which is a shame on my part. I'll look for a Japanese copy of it for the Wii, since it still seems to be cheap here in Japan.
    I know a lot of NES purists (snobs?) will trash on Ninja Ryukenden III for being an easier version of Ninja Gaiden III, but it honestly sounds like a lot more fun from Try's take on it. And I've loved the N64 Castlevania games, especially Legacy of Darkness. Gotta love that Henry sidequest. I was lucky to pick that up new for very cheap at a Sears in the early 2000s when they were closing down their gaming department. I got that, Goemon's Great Adventure, and Resident Evil 2 all for about 40 dollars total! Three great, overlooked games for the N64--and apparently worth a lot of money to collectors now!
    Anyway, end wall of text. Excellent choices, and excellent video as always.

    Thanks for the Heavenly Guardian recommendation, I picked up a copy for the Wii while watching this video. Now on Castlevania 64, I honestly tried to like it, I really did, as I found a copy years ago while gaming hunting, and knew of it's bad rep, but I just could not get into like the old school 2D games on the NES, no I'm not saying it's bad, just not my cup of tea. Anyways great video as always.

    Now THAT's some good stuff! Hidden gems! I LOVE to see good games that don't get a lot of love get their 5 minutes of spotlight!
    I'm gonna have to keep a lookout for Heavenly Guardian for my Wii, and yeah the Japanese Ninja Gaiden 3 is pretty good, but I think I like it for different reasons, mostly because of how much of a technical marvel that game is, it really pushes the limits of the NES like few other games do! I mean seriously, look at that sweet parallax scrolling, voice samples and animated background tiles! That's some pretty good stuff!

    There's something nobody ever mentions about the N64 Castlevania games.
    In the original, the first time you meet Dracula in the second level, his lines are dubbed; he actually talks.
    In Legacy of Darkness, probably because of memory limitations, his voice was removed.

    I think we're the only people on Earth that aren't wholly negative about Castlevania 64. I have really good memories of playing it late at night while I was alone in the house so I think the atmosphere really worked great for it. People mention the camera and the controls and they're certainly correct in doing so, but while I don't excuse them I do think you can overcome them with some play time.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +LegionsOfAnon [Try4ce] Absolutely! It's a bit of a clunky game, so you have to have some willingness to stick with it. I also think it has my favorite Dracula fight in the series... I only didn't mention it because I didn't have time to record more of the game.

    Even back in 1999, I didnt think Castlevania 64 was that bad. It still has the gothic feel and the fear of platforming lol Camera and some of the controls were pretty much my only complaints, but its adaptable.

    For huge fans of old school CV, 64 is the definitive 3D entry. LOI and COD were more inspired by Iga's metroidvania designs. Those are great too, sometimes I'd call them better, but if you prefer CV1-3 then 64 is right up your ally. LOS was great too and a return to form for the series as far as atmosphere and style is concerned but it is missing a bit of that charm from the older games.

    Given how well received was Maximo for the PS2, it surprises me how ignored its sequel is. Maximo 2 is a great game and it's on DVD format, which means it won't be mean to the PS2 lens. It's more like an ignored gem than a hidden one.

    All great choices here, guys. I picked up HG for a dollar and it was totally worth it. Also, I'd heard that Tecmo got a lot of flak for making NG2 on NES easier than NG1 from US crowds, hence why they intentionally made NG3 artificially harder with non-unlimited continues and more damage taken during being hit.

    It is just me or the PS3 version of Under Defeat runs even badder? I have my 360 Realese (Japanese and digital "Deluxe") and it's NOT near that much Slowdown as that seen on the video... I mean, yes that part you did side-by-side on the Dreamcast compared to the PS3 was... bad, the 360 realese doesn't run that awful tbh, it has goodly placed slowdown, but not messy like the showcased here...
    As a G.Rev adepto (And Taito in general) I was absolutely pleased you mentioned it, is an awesome game.

    Ninja Gaiden 3's actually the first game in the series I played, if only because my folks found it at a yard sale and thought I would enjoy it. Truth be told, I've played it so much over the years, the increased difficulty and lack of continues don't even bother me anymore. While I do personally think the American version gets too much of an undeserved bad rep, I can understand why folks would find the original version more appealing... and in hindsight, the changes they made do seem rather silly and unnecessary. Still, I think both versions are worth looking up, depending on how much difficulty you desire (you could almost think of the American version as "Hard Mode").

  • @Qardo
    @Qardo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think one hidden gem would be The (Real) Ghostbusters The Video Game from 2009. A game that got pretty average scores and kind of flew under the radar for a lot of people and even fans. Yet the story is really good. The Gameplay is okay not great. Plus the voice work is done by most of the original cast of the movies. It is one that is a true hidden gem for me...which is one I wish I had played and now it is hard to get a hold of.....people ask way too much for it lol.

    I still prefer lament of innocence over all other 3D castlevanias, Castlevania 64 had a good soundtrack though... Ninja Gaiden 3 is by far the hardest one in the series but that doesn't make it inferior to the other two, for me the downside always were that it wasn't a sequel of ninja Gaiden 2 but a prequel located between 1 and 2, and that didn't made sense for me at the time (yes back in the day I played it because of the cinematics, I wanted to know what happened with Ryu in the story lol)

    A new series for a new year, nice guys.
    Coury: Is Heavenly Guardian all old-school text based or did they had voices in the
    cutscenes?
    Try: It should be noted that this better version of Ninja Gaiden 3 is also the one present on the SNES' Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. As for Castlevania, the franchise didn't die after the N64 titles, all 6 handheld titles on the GBA and NDS were well received. Konami made the same mistake with Castlevania as other companies did when they tried rebooting it as a more "hardcore" title, that's what killed the franchise. But hey, at lease they're making a Pachinko machine for Castlevania now :p

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      [Try4ce] Oh yeah, the GBA and DS games are great. But they really floundered in 3D. None of the PS2/Xbox/PS3/360 games really fit into either the classic or SotN format. Though again, I did enjoy LoI and LoS for what they were. I could not enjoy Curse of Darkness at all, and still haven't played LoS2.

  • @SkyScourgeGod
    @SkyScourgeGod 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a rare breed that actually likes most of the 3D Castlevania games, even the ones on the N64. Keep in mind I also like playing the original metroidvania platforming style ones like Bloodlines and Symphony of the Night, so you can call me a player of many tastes. I personally thought that Lament of Innocence, Curse of Darkness and Legacy of Darkness were very fun to play, even Castlevania 64 was fine albeit in need of some serious polishing (which it did get in Legacy of Darkness... mostly). The only 3D Castlevania titles I didn't like was the Lords of Shadow series, those games just didn't feel like Castlevania games even considering it was within the 3D realm. I won't knock on the opinions of others in regards to their tastes in games, but I really dislike it when people look at others funny or just straight up criticize them when they have the courage to say that Castlevania 64 was not as bad as most people make it out to be.

      Ranting about how Sonic Adventure (and its sequel) is still a good game against all of the opposition (which really feels the majority these days) and how it deserves a second chance and the direction it pursued is a good direction to go for Sonic.

    Also, I see Try got that UltraHDMI mod. Good stuff! I got mine too, my N64 is sitting right under the TV with Body Harvest in it, and the game has never looked better.
    BTW Rockstar, sequel please? Thinking about what they could do with the game using today's tech... Oh man.

      [Try4ce] I've been wanting to do a video involving Body Harvest for a while, such a unique game, especially for its time.

    the 3D frogger games
    the ones where you can move one square at a time and solve puzzles, not the regular cross the street and win ones
    there were many of them. The weakest being Frogger Beyond imo

    Any difference between the PS2 and Wii version of Heavenly Guardian?

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +warnerg80 [Coury] Well, the PS2 was the originally intended destination for it, so the game was designed around the controller. I've never played the Wii version, but I've heard that the controls were changed to accommodate a Wiimote and nunchuck with no other control scheme options. So...I'd have to say the PS2 version is the one to go with.

    To put things in perspective, Castlevania (64) came out two months after The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Imagine going from a masterpiece like OoT to CV64. It was a disappointment in every way.

    I thought Castlevania: Curse of Darkness was the best 3D game till Lords of Shadow came about. Both are great for different reasons. Curse was the closest the 3D games got to the SOTN formula all the games on the handhelds followed.
