      The ptu is the key. Ford says they are set for life without a fluid change. That makes a very short life, so you buy a new vehicle.

    The worst thing about that 3.5 is the water pump in the timing cover timing chain driven

    • @averylolar6126
      @averylolar6126 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      thats true but if you change your oil and coolant on time, it wont eat away at the rubber seals that causes them to fail

    • @natejusko486
      @natejusko486 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Seriously. Had that happen while on vacation at the beach with my family. Noticed coolant on the ground, popped the hood and noticed the reservoir was empty, pulled the oil dipstick…chocolate milkshake.
      Fortunately, it had happened relatively soon to when I noticed it, towed it 200 miles back to my local mechanic (thanks AAA!), and they were able to change out the water pump for ONLY $1.4k.
      Worth it though, because I’ve gotten another 75k miles out of the engine. But keep in mind, i was aware of this issue and checked my fluids religiously (even would send oil samples to Blackstone Labs to check for moisture in the oil), and nothing showed until the catastrophic failure of the water pump. My mechanic friend showed it to me after, and the interior bearing rod just snapped in half and allowed the coolant to dump straight into the engine.
      It (the water pump) does have a double gasket with two weep holes that should give you a heads up on incremental leaks and is extremely durable otherwise, but man…what a stupid design to save a few inches of engine clearance!
      Also, the other thing to watch on these cars is if they have the 6F50 transmission…do a search on TSS/OSS issues, extremely common and can cause serious issues if not addressed quickly.

    Hey Scotty speaking of Ford products, I have a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis with 327k miles on it. It was built in Canada. When I moved from Connecticut to Tennessee 14 months ago, I drove this car the 1100 miles to my new home without any problems at all AND going 70 mph the entire trip, the 4.6L V8 delivered 25mpg, which was the stated mileage rating at the time of manufacture. So to all car buyers, don’t discount older cars. There are still some good ones out there..I was lucky my Mercury was a free car, with no mechanical defects at time of acquisition. 😊 And there still are no mechanical defects outside of preventive maintenance. So treat your cars right and they’ll treat you right..

    Scotty as a CN employee, we service the Ford plant in Oakville, Ontario bringing in auto parts from the stamping plant in South Buffalo and pulling out loaded railcars with new Edges in them, I believe the Lincoln MKX's were still built there which then became the Lincoln Nautilus in 2019. We were told 2023 was going to be the last year before plant shutdown for retooling and electrification but now it has been pushed to the middle of 2024. No one knows if and when that will happen since it's all up in the air.

    I love my 2010 Ford edge! 200,000 miles and the original AWD system is still going strong. She’s been an amazing trooper for my mom and I since new, and only ever needed all 4 wheel bearings at 175,000 and normal maintenance along the way. 4 sets of tires, 2 sets of front brakes and 1 set of rears, engine oil every 3,000, transfer case every 25-50,000 (depending on driving condition) transmission every 50,000, and differential fluid every 75,000. I could not give this thing any more praise for how reliable she is; hell even the high beam, license plate lamp, fog light, and side marker bulbs are all original from 2010.

    Others may have already mentioned this, but the weak link in the AWD Flex, Escape, or Edge is the PTU. The PTU holds less than a quart of 75W-140 gear oil. If you religiously change the PTU oil, it should last.
    The older PTU models didn’t have a drain plug, so you had to siphon out the old oil. Apparently, the newer PTU models have a drain plug

    We still have our 2007 Ford Edge, you're right, the PTU or AWD unit is a poor design. We are on our 3rd PTU, it only holds not quite a quart of 75/140 synthetic gear oil & they cook the lubricant and burn up! I started having it scavenged out every year (no drain plug), but they still failed. It now has 277,000 miles on it, it's ready for front CV Shafts and a rear driveshaft (can be expected with this mileage on it).

    I have a 2014 Ford Edge with 220,000 miles...has all the same modern features as the brand new cars do and it's paid for! Bought it for $5,000. lol Still runs like a top! Would definitely buy another one even though I've never been a fan of Ford.

      @Jonathan-mp32x I don't think it as bad as the Chrysler 2.7 v6 which had other problems along with the water pump replacement but still it's very annoying.

    • @TXAG81

      @Jonathan-mp32x Suggest you don’t let it go too long. If the seals fail, you’ll have coolant in your crankcase and wipe your bearings out - - good bye engine. Change that water pump before she blows.

  • @GeorgeTsiros
    @GeorgeTsiros 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    When they list the price for a battery-electric car, they should also list the price for a battery replacement (shop cost) and replacement battery (item cost). Not much sense to buy a $20k car when 10 years later, to replace the battery you need more money than what the car is worth. I can't wait for an electric powered car, but so far they are gimmicky toys, not tools of transportation.
