    2. think up idea of what to make and become quite enthusiastic about it
    3. spend all your time making a reference image
    4. try again?

If anyone is wondering how he makes his face look smooth at the end...go into Edit mode, select all faces or vertices, then in the left side tool column click the Shading / UVs tab, and click Faces: Smooth. Or use the bottom Mesh menu - Faces - Shade Smooth.

      No subdivision modifier?

    • @randomcommenter8581
      @randomcommenter8581 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Anatoly Wein Using the Subdivision Modifier does work, but you will see that the shading looks blocky on the object. Smooth shading smooths out the blockiness
Side note: You don’t want to use high subdivision numbers as more topology slows render times, so it’s better to just use smooth lighting

Be ready for a ride guys, this, THIS, is one of the most complete and consistent tutorial for blender on youtube for character creation.
By the way Darrin, thanks for the quality voice capture and cannot thank you enough for your Radio-Like voice tone that is really making a difference enjoying all the explanation.
There are so many videos out there (90+%) that are either bad volume, bad capture, shitty voice or bad english.
And to all people complaining about clearer explanations, yes, he could activate key capture in order to help a bit but If you complaint about he doesn't explain well or enough, you are clearly not ready for this. Learn more. When I stumbled upon this video serie, I was using Blender for 2 days and been able to do a full character (and much more) within 2 weeks.
Keep on your good work Darrin

Great start! Excited to jump into character modeling. For those complaining about the tutorial not explaining enough about Blender's interface, I recommend watching a beginner course on modeling simpler objects; character modeling isn't the easiest thing to jump straight into, especially without knowledge of Blender's workspace. Blender Guru has a great tutorial on making a donut, which will definitely get you up to speed with the platform.

I have a degree in 3D animation and know how to model a character... in 3ds Max and Maya. It's been so frustrating that I could never translate those skill over to Blender and that is has continued to elude me for so long. It is a huge relief to finally be able to understand how to use this sofware.

I have to wonder, after watching many tutorials of this nature. How often is it that, even when working with a reference image, you go through this painstaking process of pulling out EVERY single vertex, one by one? And starting with the head? I've been far more productive when I've instead started with the body, and built the basic topology first, before coming in for details. Tutorials like these overwhelmed me for a long time, because instead of like with drawing, they started with precise details immediately.

I’ve made objects, simple rockets, tried to render a Falcon Heavy cad, rotated it, make 30 frames and make a small clip and also played around with physics. I learned that physics like gravity needs a geometric plane to work. It makes me think: the small quality animations that you see took people some hard work.

For anyone with blender 2.9 (Or slightly below version, it should have a similar layout) here's how to get the image the way he got it:
    >> Open a split screen.
    >> Press number pad "1"(y axis/front orthographic) in one of the two screens. Then press number pad "3"(x axis/right orthographic) on the other screen.
    >> Then press "Shift + A" to add the image with your cursor on only one of the screens, from the list that appears select "Image" then "Reference"
    >> Pick your image > keep "align to view" turned on
    >> Repeat for next screen
    >> Then, select image > Go the right side panel > "Object data properties"(second last icon) > Here you can change the opacity and the "Only axis aligned"
Hope this helped!! Thought I would say this because at first I was also facing problems with this. Also if anyone else has a better way, i'd love it if you told me as well.

@@cloakedfoxgaming6612 I have never used version 2.79 so I don't really know if this works. I suggest to try updating to the latest version. As for split screening, in the later versions, you go to one of the corners of the window. right below the pannel that says "layout", "Modelling" an so on. When you're cursor is there the shape of the cursor changes. Then just left click and drag the cursor to where you want it. Also just as pre - advice, when you want to get rid of the split screen, right click on the line right between the two screens and then press "Join Screens".

The last time I modeled a character I had a reference picture just like the one in the video. That how I learned that texturing a character model with its arms stretched out at a 90° angle from the body creates horrible distortions in the texture on at the shoulder joints as soon as you move the arms down at to their natural hanging position.
Always always always decrease the arm angle closer to half way between before UV unwrapping!

This is an excellent video. Very close to the way I was taught for 3ds Max. I watched another video that made the skeleton first and then auto-generated a default human mesh, already rigged for animation but while that was convenient, I wanted to build my human from an image. Mainly because I could end up spending even more time modifying a model than just building it from the ground up.

*Me, later that evening:* _[staring blankly at a _*_full_*_ character model, that asides from a few tweaks, is ready for 3D print]_

Felt the same level of difficulty when i started with 3ds max. Now it's kinda easy and I just automatically hover over the tools and create my models, animations and vfx. It's about your interest and time you spend learning. I also felt the same with Unity and unreal engine but got used to it (not unreal however). So if you think this is difficult just learn it and in another 2-3 years I'll probably see you make some badass tutorials. Good luck!
Also, great tutorial. Learning blender slowly.

Not trying to be rude or anything, but the reason he linked a video for a Blender guide in the description is because the things he skips are usually things that anyone past the beginner stage in blender knows how to to do. Followed the tutorial in Blender 2.8 and was able to google most discrepancies with the version used here. The only thing I can't figure out is in the end. How did he make the *Object* *Smooth?* Mine has sharp edges on all the face connections to one another.
    *EDIT:* I found the answer.
#1 Select all of the faces.
#2 (In Modeling/Edit Mode) Select *Face* which is next to Edge and UV, in the smaller menu up top.
#3 In the submenu, select *Shade Smooth*

    • @Comandobunny

It's actually way easier than that (at least on Blender 2.8). Right-clicking on a mesh should bring up the Object Context Menu, where the first two options are "Shade Smooth" and "Shade Flat". Two clicks!
