You are flat out AMAZING! This is exactly what I wanted to do. And then I can easily change the gradient colors to create as many multiple versions of this document as I like in different colors. The sky is the limit! Thank you. Thank you. THANK YOU!

I was following along your lesson and thought myself: I can do it with clipmask! Guess what? It didn't work, lol. I don't understand the mechanism behind Illustrator. And sometimes I prefer doing my stuff on Photoshop. Love your lessons Helen, your expertise on Illustrator amazes me! Cheers!

I am with you there Alex. That was my first thought - a clipping mask - and of course, it failed. The trick is to have alternative options up your sleeve. If you think about how you'd approach this in Photoshop - you could do this with a mask - ie. put the pattern into the mask. If you take that knowledge to Illustrator you'd have your solution. It doesn't always work that way! but very often it will.

This tip helped me out a bunch! The only thing I wish it wouldn't do is not have the pattern become white while under the clipping mask, but instead becomes grey

This looks like it should work, but every time I follow the steps outlined, it disappears, first it looks like a very washed out version of the gradient, and then the gradient disappears, making the whole thing disappear. It doesn't make sense at all. I'm struggling with this. :(

This is amazing! You have solved a problem I have struggled with for quite some time! I have a question: when I apply this affect, the gradient applies perfectly and everything looks great, but the opacity of the pattern now with the gradient applied appears lower than 100%. There is a slight transparency on it even though in the Transparency Panel and in the Appearance panel Opacity is set to 100%. This is causing problems with the gradient colours really popping, and also, because I'm layering two parts of a pattern, I can see through them and it doesn't look the way I'd like.

Can I make a transparent gradient mask over the gradient color pattern? Cause I try but it doesn't work 2 transparent mask

Question Miss Bradley, if I wanted to use an animal skin from the patterns in illustrator, does it have to be solid black before I can do the gradient like the video?

hey :) Helen I tried to achieve green gradient over matrix numbers ( 1011101 etc.) that I set as a pattern. When I outlined numbers and released the compound path zeros become filled shapes :) I wanted large set of numbers just like matrix and apply gradient over it. This technique of yours might be the solution.

I this this might be your solution. I tried it a few days ago with compound paths (like donuts) and it worked just fine. Best of luck.
