    This was so helpful, I started at university and was a week late due to having covid. So I was behind and I didn't want to have to sit through 2 hours worth of a recorded lecture just to do what you did in 12 minutes. Our assignment was to of course to make a pattern so this has been a life saver

    Greetings,
    I would like to add something to this because although this was a magnificent tutorial, I had some difficulties having the pattern show up on my actual swatches- every time I would drag it, it would not show there.
    I would like to add that this process will not work if the items you have in your pattern are are not embed it. In other words, If you are bringing in a file from a different artboard, make sure you embed that one and expanded. I had a hard time figuring out why it wouldn't work.
    Thank you very much for this wonderful and helpful tutorial. I hope this serves for help to some people.

    PERFECT! Simplest tutorial for patterns! I appreciate the "no-cutting" as it deemed very difficult to edit the vectors. That bounding box is also genius. Thank you so much for this.

      I agree with the bounding box! Eliminates the clipping mask confusion!

    • @livlauryn

      I don't understand the 'bounding box' part. I followed all the steps but it didn't cut out anything from outside the bounding box? help

    • @PoisonousRakun
      @PoisonousRakun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@livlauryn It is like the create clipping mask function. You can do either of the 2 to achieve the same result. I said it was perfect for when you dont want to work woth a clipping mask layer. 3 years after, I now prefer the clipping mask over the crop using pathfinder. It is less destructive.

    • @livlauryn
      @livlauryn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PoisonousRakun Hi, thank you for responding but I mean I tried following the instructions but it didn't work. I'm new to illustrator so I don't know either method, nor do I know how to use a clipping mask in anything but photoshop.

    • @PoisonousRakun
      @PoisonousRakun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@livlauryn It works like this. Group your elements. Add a shape that serves as your mask layer... place it on top of the grouped layer. Select both the shape and the group. Select Pathfinder on the Window dropdown menu. Click crop. So anything outside the shape will be cropped out. Anything inside will stay.

    Hi there,
    Thank you for this tutorial. I was wondering what I should do if when I move the pattern to the Swatches panel and create it in the box step what should I do if I dont like the orientation? My pattern looks completely off and there are big spaces with nothing in them and then the same vector is underneath one another. I am probably doing something wrong on my end and I was just wondering if you could guide me in the right direction! Thanks, great tutorial!

    • @bycristinasilvia
      @bycristinasilvia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Abbi! It's hard to tell without seeing the pattern. Did you use a bounding box (an empty rectangle behind all the other layers)? You can double click on the pattern and edit it using the pattern tool. It might be easier that way. You should watch this tutorial: th-cam.com/video/4oEe3CgDWu8/w-d-xo.html

One of the layers must have a border. But since I can't find it I can't fix it and will have to delete it and start over.
