    RIP half your shop bud, damn! Glad you’re safe after your press decided to opt out emphatically!
    I saw another comment about how Damascus looks like oil on water, and the way your pattern turned out it really does! But like, if that oily puddle had some wind making ripples. Super cool, and a beautiful knife!

      I noticed it on a knife Will Stelter made recently. It was like 200ish layers i think and he peened it and that added that look to it and i thought it would be cool to try but i did it by forging it thin instead of peening it.

    Beautiful knife, I really like the green burl handle. The high layer count created such a fine pattern. It looks very good. Almost like when canister Damascus is made with powdered steel, and it has this almost freckles/static all over, but you can tell its whole layers swirling all over.
    One thing that might be cool, is making a billet where you alternate high layer count and lower layers maybe with a twist or something so the pattern alternates heavily high layers and low layers with the twisted lines. Might look very interesting, or maybe not. Could be worth a try just for content and views.

    That came out really nice! My question is, when you bed the tang in the handle, with the wax on the tang, how long do you let the epoxy set before pulling the tang out of the handle? And what is dry/set time of the epoxy you are using? I want to try this but worry about letting it sit too long, or not long enough.

    • @JPsBladeworks
      @JPsBladeworks  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Im using 5 minute epoxy and i wait until it is solid enough to hold its firm but not fully cured. If you wait until it is fully cured it will be more difficult to remove but if you coat it properly with the wax it should come off with a few taps like i did. Hope that helps. All dry times are different so i cant give an exact time.

    That process of adding epoxy to the handle for a precision fit is called Bedding or glass bedding depending on material or smith. Old gun smithing technique they would tape the barrel and hog out material from the stock to make the barrel free float for better accuracy.
    But keep up the good work I enjoy your videos.

    Wheels can be fairly expensive once they get over about 12", easiest solution is to make yourself a radius platen for the grinder out of some mild steel and just mount that into the machine. Typically you want to run them slower as there's a bit more friction between the belt and the steel, but you can get into 24, 36 or even a 72" radius (string, pen and make a compass on your workshop floor over some paper or MDF it doesn't have to be super accurate)
    Reason being is that on a thin knife like a chef's it won't want a super-deep fuller into it anyway so you don't want to blow through the middle and get any speed holes in it.
    The smarter knife maker will also make themselves a wooden chock of the same radius for hand sanding it later on... then not lose them like I did because somehow they also grow legs and walk

    • @JPsBladeworks
      @JPsBladeworks  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the advice. The company that makes my belt grinder carries a radius platen so ill see if its better to buy that one or make my own for the sake of time. I definitely have that issue of things growing legs especially when i need it. 5 minutes later when im done and dont need it anymore it shows up in front of me 🤣

      Ive never tried but if it wasnt already hardened a grinder would be easier for me. I also dont care about "professional". I care about results. Many great makers around the world in 3rd world countries get the same or better results with more primitive tools.
