    Using SLX shifter with XT derailleur and SLX 12 speed sprocket
    I was well impressed when I figured out I could pull the shifter and it shifted upwards.
    May upgrade to an XT shifter one day, but after watching this video it's not really high on my list of upgrades.

    Hey LoveMTB, nice detailed tech content as always. I have a bike with the 12sp XT shifter and one with a 12sp SLX shifter, and call me crazy but I like the softer SLX shifting. The only thing I sometimes miss a tiny but if multirelease, but it's a tiny feature that is easy to look past compared to the (for me) nicer feel of the SLX shifting. The XT just seems to require a bit more force because it shifts right away before the release. I'm very happy with SLX crankset, Deore/SLX derailleur and SLX cassette. I feel no difference between SLX derailleur and Deore, but big difference from SLX to XT shifter (although a negative one for me, going more expensive).

      @@LoveMTB the XT shifter is the most remarkably different component in the grouppo compared to SLX or Deore. The SLX components are so similar in price to XT, I would rather just have XT if spending that amount of money. The Deore derailleur and cassette actually look really good and perform great from what I hear. Plus the Deore cassette is all steel and should last much longer.

    • @RideAlongside

      @@LoveMTB as far as cassettes go, yeah, it’s less than $10 difference between cs-m6100 & cs-m7100. $20 different between rd-m6100 and m7100. You’re right. Pretty close. I guess I was thinking the price difference was in brakes? I often go with a $/g decision, but not with cassettes. I often singlespeed, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I like durability and don’t really find super wide range to be that helpful if the frame I am riding can only take a 32t chainring. I often ride up steep climbs in 32x19-21. 32x51 isn’t going to be super helpful unless I’ve been riding all day and am bonking hard. That said, it’s gotta be nice to pedal more slowly than I could walk. :) Thanks for all the great videos. I almost always watch them.

      @@coolmuthapea solid advice. I remember testing the RSD Sergeant with 11spd SLX shifter and it was definitely lighter/easier/better shifting than my XT 11 speed shifter. Maybe you’re on your something.

  • @coolmuthapea
    @coolmuthapea 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Im running xt and slx 12 speed shifters. The xt has some great features, however I find the slx much easier-lighter to shift, resulting in much faster shifting up and down the range. I can go up gears faster than the xt, which feels stiff in comparison. I can barely reach the 4th click on the down shift of the xt, so that wipes that bonus out.
    My choice now would be slx shifter, xt derailleur its better than the slx, deore cassette! I prefer to have all steel cogs, I go through alloy cogs way too quick, I also change chains every 250- 300 miles so thats not to blame. I currently use sunrace 11-51t all steel cog cassette, it's wearing well and even throughout the set. Kmc x12 chains 👌

    I’ve used all three 11s shifters before, and I didn’t like the XT. It was far too stiff, making my thumb hurt after just a short ride. The SLX is the best “soft and mushy” shifter. The XTR is awesome: same crisp instant release of the XT, but with the easy lever force of the SLX.
    TLDR: If you can’t afford the XTR shifter, go with SLX instead.

    II just installed a SLX shifter on my shopping bike. It's about as light shifting as older Deore were, but connected to the RD, it's still not optimal for my thumb, I did test shifts, my thumb still misaligns with shift shifter, so far no crazy pain initially, but I did feel discomfort, after a while it start to hurt a bit, now my thumb feels weird. But better than the XT for me I guess.
    But I don't think I should have it on my enduro bike. I think it might be fine on the shopping bike as I won't shift as much. I suspect my thumb might hurt on a 4 or 5 h ride.
    Ergonomics:
    It's still not optimal same issues as I had before if I up-shift using my thumb, I will rub the grip, barely enough room, thumb joint hits the down shift lever.
    But down shifting, seems to be improved, the lever feels grippy, seems to have a better shape.
    Not sure if it has less travel than older shifters.
    Using index finger to down-shift works well, that's what I will be using as it won't fatigue my thumb.

    ...................................................................Hey thanks! What I'm really searching for though, is comparison of the thumb force needed to down shift. You describe Deore and SLX as "soft" and XT as "crisp". This is close to the information I seek, but still not quite there. I have a weak thumb and am wondering if any of the units operate with a noticeably lighter (or harder) push from the thumb. If the answer is "yes" please tell me which is which. If the answer is "no" please tell me if perhaps the "crisp" click of the XT might also happen to have a shorter throw, or if the SLX may have a shorter throw. Even if the force needed is the same a shorter thumb movement would be preferable.

I measured the provided Shimano cable at approx. 78 inches (round up to 2000mm so it's likely 2100mm taut). I had to use a Jagwire cable 2300mm. Why does Shimano give this short of a cable with the SLX shifter? SRAM X01 comes with 2200mm. SHIMANO MTB OPTISLIK SHIFT CABLE SET comes with 3300mm housing and 2100mm and 1800mm cables. Unbelievable. Also Shimano does not make carbon cranks? So bad.

    My xt 12 sp shifter recently broke like your xtr one. Autopsy shows broken small return spring for a cam that actuates the wheel that pulls the cable. Also worth mentioning that ingress protection is horrible, i take a lot of care of my bikes but found tons of sand inside this shifter. I had a spare slx 12 shifter and i can also confirm it is way smoother to press the levers but i will be putting a gx shifter since i like the feel more(double upshift is nice but i don't use it all that much to make it a deal brraker for me). I am a bit dissapointed since i expected more durability from parts marked xt or xtr....

      Just wanted to give a small update in regards to hybdrid system: long term i think it's a no go- started getting bad shifting in the middle of the cassette. Things i tried: new ot sp41 housing and cables, new gx shifter(to rule this one out), new jockey wheels, frame hanger tripple checked(it is perfectly straight), new clutch assembly and adjusted as per shimano manual. Sram shifter improves the shifting only abismally, the fix which got it working decently are 14T jockey wheels instead of 13T and lower than recommended b gap(check for collision of cage with 50t when shifting from 10 gear to 11 gear). I will be buying an gx eagle derailleur as soon as it's back in stock since i find annoying this imprecise shifting on my trail bike. Forgot to mention: i have gx casette with aprox 3000km on it and a x01 chain with aprox 500 on it.

    • @eeiX.industries
      @eeiX.industries 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LoveMTB yes, checked with a proper der hanger tool, not by eye or any other thing. I also do checks and adjustments on new hangers/frames...even though the hanger is new it may not sit exactly square on the frame or the hub may have just a tiny bit of misalignment on the axle/frame interface. 12 sp i would say is indeed sensitive to hanger alignment and b-gap/chain length. Upon further research into using sram casette and shimano der i noticed that shimano ders are not engineering marvels themselves, shimano 12 sp shifting relies heavily on cassete ramps/teeth profiles and the chain chamfers. Upon my investigation more engineering effort went into for example a gx der but due to pattents they couldn't make the clutch serviceable/adjustable. Make no mistake a roller bearing type 3 clutch is superior in regards to smoothness than shimanos one way bearing encased in a metal band...only downfalls are it's not serviceable and not adjustable(a shame becase when new it has decent friction but after the first lets say 700-1000km it gets weak...somewhere along the lines of 3-3,5Nm, a cage that big with jockeys that big should have 4-5Nm to be efficient by my estimates).

    • @eeiX.industries
      @eeiX.industries 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And i know i posted my findings into an unrelated video but maybre it still helps someone out. My final solution to running sram casettes with shimano rd is: 1.use 14T jockeys, at least the upper one in order to decrease b gap a little 2.adjust b gap so that the shimano mark on thr cage aligns with the wells of the teeth of 50t and not the tips(be sure to check in a stand that you have no collision between inner rd cage and 50t when shifting from gear 10-11, if so increase b gap by small amount until no collision)->e*thirteen has a manual that shows this for their trs 9-50t casettes. Side note: there is a small downfall that in gears 9-10-11-12(the big ones) you will not be able to multishift since derailleur will make collision with 50t, it doesnt have enough gap to self adjust its position when multi shifts are used-for me not a problem since i never needed to go from gear 9 to 12 in one go, single shifts are enough for me there. After doing this shifting is great.
